Paint fill 101

I had the best luck using nail polish, a straight razor blade, a lint free cloth (I used an old bed sheet cut into a small rectangle then folded) soaked in acetone and some rubbing compound/automotive polish. I globbed the nail polish onto the club head then used the razor blade to scrape off most of the excess nail polish. After approx 10 minutes, I used the lint free cloth soaked in acetone (do not use razor blade after nail polish has been on for more than a minute, it will pull the nail polish up) and lightly wiped the rest of the excess nail polish off. After nail polish is completely dry, use the razor blade again to get any spots you may have missed with the the acetone and then use the rubbing compound to remove the remaining nail polish from the club head (the acetone soaked cloth may have left some polish behind, producing a small layer of dilluted nail polish on the head).

The type of rubbing compound or automotive polish you use does not matter, anything that will grab the excess paint will work, I use Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0 for all of my club head and shaft polishing needs, it works great.

I used Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme wear nail polish, I don't think this matters either. You will have to search for matte finish nail polish if you don't want a glossy finish, most nail polish has a gloss finish. Nail polish is thicker than acrylic hobby paint and will fill the impressions a lot better IMO.

My attempts with the acrylic based hobby paints did not go well, hence the move to nail polish. I think the acrylic would probably work best on very small lettering or symbols surrounded by other paint. I was only redoing the numbers on the sole and "Mizuno" logo on my MP-60s, so I had plenty of room for the razor blade.

IMHO In the long run I don't think the water-based acrylics will be as durable as the nail polish, but if you think you'll be changing colors alot that's probably a moot point.

I used a paint stripper that I got from a local hardware store. I think it was called Zip Strip, but I dont think the brand matters.
I just left it on for a few minutes then wiped it off. It worked really well.

Does the Acrylic paint hold up on Irons...The used Irons, I bought for my wife were just delivered today...
The numbers on the sole could use a touch up, and having read through this thread..It should be easy enough to fix with the right materials..

Refill the sole numbers , regrip them and put 'em under the tree for X-mas

Great job on the paint-fill, she is a real beauty dude!

OH MY GOD, that may be the nicest California putter I have ever seen and I like how it matches the headcover. Pure awesomeness.

That is a work of Art, really like the matching paint with the Hula girl.

Awesome thread, I've read the whole thing and learned a lot. I soaked my Mizuno Mp-53's in acetone and got the original paint fills off. My Cleveland CG15's are stubborn as hell though, acetone won't do the trick. My question is when using the tal strip how long does it take the paint to start bubbling on stubborn vokeys or in my case CG15s?

2-3 mins maybe.. I used tal strip on my vokeys and had them stripped clean in no time.

One color at a time... Also dipping a Q-TIp in actetone and "wringing" it out instead of a big WIPE .. After it's all dry you can use the big wipe or an extra fine steel wool to take off any residual paint.

Paint filling for the first time. using testors enamal paint(s). when I wipe away excess with acetone, it is smearing the dark color into the white areas. Any help on wiping the excess without smearing the two colors together is appreciated.

Thanks to all the information in this thread and some other threads I was able to do this quite easily. It's just really really time consuming but worth it in the end!

I'm a huge Seattle Mariner fan so I went with their old school retro colors.
