The 1 course you have to play in Palm Springs?

Recommended Posts

So lets say you were out in Palm Springs for a conference sometime in the next 30 days. You were staying at Rancho Las Palmas and playing there once. You have free time one other day to play.

What would be your "The one course you have to play in Palm Springs"?

I don't want to sort through a list of the 5 or 6 best courses because I'm not going to have time to play them all.

I'm not terribly concerned with cost, might be the only time I get to Palm Springs.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the help everyone; much appreciated.

In Saratoga I play mostly at Saratoga National, but I grew up playing the Spa State Park course and I still love it there in the spring and fall. Do you live in the area? Many neat little tracks in about a 30 mile radius from us.

My firm has a Corporate membership; Corporate Preferred customer or whatever they call it. What's nice is most of my colleagues don't use it so I'm there quite a bit. Only downside is that there isn't a pool or tennis (like a traditional country club), which means my wife and daughter have no interest in it. This also means I don't spend quite as much time there as I would otherwise.
I went to college in VT; some great courses up near Burlington and also over near Killington. We try to get to Green Mountain National once a year at least.

Hey that's great!! I've always loved it over in the Saratoga area. How long has your firm had the membership? I played over there with a guy whos company had one of those types of memberships, I think he was a lawyer... I went to school in Burlington at Champlain...

Would have loved to stay and play more. We were out there for a business trip/conference.
Played once at our resort (Rancho Las Palmas). Short course was only 6300 from the tips...it was a good warm-up but not much of a test of golf.
Next day played the Pete Dye course up at the Westin/ Mission Hills resort, that was a good layout. This was a last second booking through Standby golf or some company like that. Would have liked to get out at Indian Wells but no openings. We weren't originally going to have time to play at all this day, so it worked out well anyway.

Last day we went out to PGA West: played Nicklaus in the morning and Stadium in the afternoon. Man, what a treat those two were. Really enjoyed the differences in the two, despite being on the same property they are really quite different. Teed off at Stadium at 1:15pm in about a 25mph blow; lets just say it didn't make it much easier. An amazing experience the last day, I'd love to play Stadium again. A really amazing test of golf. The greens just bake; seem to roll forever. I can't imagine what they are like in the summer.

Thanks for the tips everyone, we had a great trip.

PGA West...but you could also check out the JW Marriott Resort course, as it is nice and almost dead if played on a weekday afternoon when you are playing hooky from work.

Drive 35 minutes to beaumont ( as long as there's no wind forecast) and play Oak Valley. $50 with cart and they have 2nd stage of tour school there every year. One of my favorite courses of the 500 or so I've played.
I'm a fan of Oak Valley too, but there's no way it's worth leaving Palm Desert to play. I have only played the Pete Dye course at Mission Hills in terms of private, but for public courses, I've played both of the La Quinta tracks as well as the PGA Norman and Nicklaus Signature courses. Out of those I highly recommend the Nicklaus Signature. It's a very strategic course without being punishing for people who might not stripe every drive, and the greens are brilliant. $150 green fees, but great deal if you want to stay a night at La Quinta. You'll get four free rounds at your choice of five courses (including PGA West), plus meals and room for under $350. See the La Quinta resort Play It Your Way package.

Please!! PGA West is way down the list! Its not even the best course on the property!

Indian Wells, Firecliff, Silverrock are all ahead.
I don't understand this post. PGA West isn't a golf course. It's an entire complex with 9 courses. None of the other courses you mentioned are on the same property....

yes, let's not confuse Palm Springs with Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indian Wells, etc. The best courses are not in Palm Springs. That said, if you could get in anywhere including the private courses I have to agree with the above poster who mentioned The Madison Club. La Quinta CC (not to be confused with La Quinta resort) is great as are many, many others down there.

I agree that Indian Wells Golf Resort and Desert Willow are at the top.  For Indian Wells, the Celebrity course is beautiful course with undulating fairways, wild flowers, creeks, etc.  Possibly my favorite course ever played.  The IW Players course is also very nice, with deeper bunkers and possibly a little more challenge.

For Desert Willow, Firecliff is the more challenging and well known of the two.  But the Mounatin View course has been improved and is also awesome.  It has wider fairways and is a little easier on the ego. While I have not played PGA West Stadium, I have played with lots of locals and whenever I say I want to play there, they all roll their eyes and say it is the most overrated course in the area.

For PGA West, I tend to hear better reviews on the Nicklaus course, although I prfer not to have fairways lined up with homes (one reaon why IWGR and DW are better optiosn for me).I have also played SilverRcok.  A cool track right up to the mountains, but not many trees and lots of gravel areas that you may have to hit out of.  Bring your A-game, cause it can kick your butt.
