Where to play???

Ok, so I am gong to Las Vegas May 16-21 for my graduation present for college. I have been trying to find places to play, but there are so many, and every website makes the course look better than it is generally. I am from Pennsylvania, so I am definitely looking for a course that is beautiful and different. All suggestions are truly welcome. I am staying about 20 minutes from the strip, so keep that in mind when suggesting a course. I really need your help!

Two Questions:

20 minutes away in which direction?

What's your budget for golf?

I'm from PA too, just about every course in Vegas is different from here! I love desert golf!

budget would be 200 and under....my dad is taking me on a business trip and the hotel and flight are all FREE....so the golfing is the present haha

I highly suggest you do a Golfwrx search. There have been MANY threads on Las Vegas golf. Warning: there is a lot of overpriced crap golf in LV, especally for visitors. Some courses have closed, notably in Henderson. If you are willing to drive about 1 hour, Wolf Creek in Mesquite is very dramatic. If not, there are several courses around Henderson. The Paiute courses are pretty good, but a bit of a drive. Do some due diligence on past Golfwrx threads and come back with questions.

Dragon Ridge and Rio Secco are really close to GVR, they are nice courses.

Just down the street from GVR (under 3 minutes away) is one of my favorite Vegas tracks.... The Legacy Golf Club. It's a US open qualifying course and is usually in great shape.

Dragon ridge and Rio are nice. Tpc is desert golf. Bears best on the west side of town is a good play. If you want to get crazy the Wynn, old desert inn course, or shadow creek and cascata are it.

I have heard time and time again that Wolfs Creek out in Mesquite, NV is the best course in the state from both locals and visitors. It's roughly 1-1.5hrs NE of Las Vegas, however. So if you're willing to do the trek it seems worthwhile.

Only courses I've played are Bali Hai next to Mandalay Bay and Bears Best. Bali Hai is pretty and that's about it. It's a relatively easy course. I think I shot an 80 on a windy day. Not worth the price. Bear's Best is a neat track and would recommend it.

Paiute (any of the 3 courses)

Rio secco

If you are willing to drive

Prime Valley (2 great fazio courses)
Wolf creek


This list is not all inclusive but don't think you will be disappointed with any of them.

Don't forget the Primm Valley Lakes Course.

Probably the closest you'll get to Shadow Creek. Tom Fazio put a lot of similar features on the Lakes Course.

I'd also recommend the Wolf Course at The Paiute. This is not Wolf Creek which is a different golf course.

thanks guys, i have played wolf creek on tiger woods a lot and that course is just a wild course...I wonder how realistic it is to the game....

Wildhorse in Henderson has not been mentioned. Not fancy but two of the best holes in the area in #4 and particularly water ringed #9. Reasonably priced but moreso for locals. Nice facilities and a good option for hitting range balls when you're in that area of Henderson, not far from Sunset Station.

Dragon Ridge is great, rack rate around $250 but can be had a little cheaper through tee time services. Have played before and it is fantastic, though not really "desert golf." But still worth it.

I am heading out next week and playing Paiute Wolf and Dragon Ridge. I have never played Wolf course before, but have heard great reviews. Well under $200 too.

Cascata is in that area, but will be $375 - worth it on a splurge but sounds like you want to keep it more reasonable.

Also there is SouthShore at Lake Las Vegas - used to be private but now open to daily play. Nicklaus course that used to be Natalie Gulbis' home course. Not sure of the green fees.

Do not waste your money on royal links or any other walters golf courses. All are over priced and sup par conditions. Way better golf is available at better prices.

It's okay. It's well maintained and pretty, that's about it. If you're staying at a resort on the strip or nearby it has convenience and location going for it. I played during the twilight rate for $100 and would not pay any more than that to play. Just not worth it.

That's one of the Walters courses as well, they have a bad rep with the locals because they aren't well run, and really are just there to gouge tourists. They aren't the worst courses, but there are certainly better options.

Brownm, Wolf is great, you should have a blast. I played in February and it was in perfect shape.

Looks nice and that's it. Over priced with airplanes over your head. Course is nothing special. I worked for walters golf and could play it for free and still would exhaust all other options for other courses before playing bali or royal links. Most times paying a cart fee somewhere else.

Las Vegas National is the closest and most economical. The wynn is next door to you but pricey. I heard spanish trails country club started allowing outside play as well.

Where I'm from 50 bucks gets you a real nice course walking. Are there any such places in vegas or are they all outrageous?

i was in town last week and wanted a quick/cheaper round since i was by myself. Ended up playing LV National for $59. Greens were in great shape, and could easily be walked. Was pretty sparsely populated as well. At least i can now say i played the course where Tiger got his first professional win. It's definitely not a PGA track now, but a nice course for the price (in Vegas).
