100-105 Swing Speed Distance

Recommended Posts

Zach's SS/length numbers sound about right. I average 113-115 and about 280 carry. This has been verified by myself and playing partners so many times I've lost count. My ball flight doesn't produce any roll, so my total distance is pretty much my carry. :(

Don't feel bad about all that carry, it'll grow on you. ( softer misses, driving uphill and carrying lakes and bunkers and 240-260 with out blinking) I hated that I couldn't hit the ball high without great effort with my old set up (Nike 9.5 BlueBoard 83x 44.5) but now I'm all carry with my new Callaway D.E.T 9.5 Habanero 60x. 275-280avg total with both, 115 ss, 165-170 bs.

Guys saying they carry 260+ are swinging faster than they think or hitting shorter than they think. 240 to 255 carry is what a ss of 100-105 should get 95% of the time.

T. Woods (08 swing) carry: 278 total: 290 BS: 183 SS: 124
S. Cink (09 swing ) carry: 273 total: 283 BS: 170 SS: 113
ME (now) carry: 268 total: 273 BS: 168 SS: 115

TOUR AVG Carry is like 260 - 265 right. AVG SS like 106 right?
Thats an avg for guys with above avg ballstriking. ( 1.48 and 1.50)

My old carry was just over 250 but rolled to 275 most of the time.

Interesting that almost everyone has commented on the accuracy of ss stats vs distances, and have even shown humility with their own stats to make a point. Some even called out the golf courses on less than accurate distance markers but no one question the balls being used. I have found 10 to 20 yd differances depending on what ball I play.

I'd agree with most posts,
I've a swing speed of 104-108 mph and generally carry 240-250yds but
with my irons my ss is 83-86 mph and am generally 8 iron 150 yds
Wish someone could help me out with my slice (and don't tell me to slow my swing down as I'm comfortable doing this)

Zach Johnson has a swing speed around 105, and he averages 278 off 'driving holes' which includes roll.

like i said if you ever are down in OC and want to play I am game, and you will see for yourself. Its really not that amazing, its not something i do on every shot, I usually average 260-270 total distance but when i actually hit it well with a draw it can carry 275. I love all these people that claim its physically impossible and have yet to bring a physics fact to the table that disputes this is possible, oh i forgot , because it is possible. And my driver is fully legal Ping Rapture V1 with Proforce V2 stiff. Maybe my swing speed goes up to 107, but that is the highest i have been clocked at since my surgery (microfracture left knee surgery). I stack everything forward when i swing and put my hands pretty far up so maybe that helps but it does happen. Just this last Monday I hit one 285 (total distance) uphill (not a huge grade), it had max 10-15 yds roll, its very possible.
Nobody said you can't get that much carry. All I'm saying is not at 105. I guarantee you you're swinging faster with a better smash factor. And, I'll bet on those ones you carry farther that you feel like you're not swinging that hard, and everything in your swing seemed to be perfect. But if you still want to spring for a round, let me know and when I'm down there for work I'll take you up on it.
so I must confess that my swing speed seems to have been miscalculated and I am swinging more in the 112 range on those 275 carry balls. The launch monitors I had been using underestimate SS by about 5 -7 mph, because they are solely using a ball speed factor which I was not familiar with. Sorry for the misinformation on that you were totally right.

Nice little side note- my SS has been getting higher as I have learned to relax and I am consistently hitting over 265 carry :)

I love it when I'm right...HAHAHAHA...JK. I knew you had to swinging faster that what you were clocked at. LM's aren't always your friend, especially when they're screwed up. Glad you got some accurate numbers, especially when you start hunting for a new X shaft. Now if I could only learn to relax and get my SS up there.

trust me, i'm the average joe. just a bigger hitter. im probably the most inconsistent decent golfer in history

i've been doing a lot of thinking lately about what shafts i should be playing, cant really afford a fitting. was swinging an 18* adams a12 pro in the mid 90's at golftown today and it was going almost exactly 200, i give up trying to figure this stuff out

FWIW, elsewhere on this site (about a year ago), I read a post that suggested your carry distance (no wind, dead center contact, "perfect" launch angle and spin rate for the SS) should be right around 2.5 times your SS.

That sounds about right to me. ;)

Guess that is probably a decent factor to use. 100SS x2.5 would be 250 yards, I know this rule won't apply to everyone but I am sure it would apply probably to 60-75% of the average joe field possibly but probably would be safe to also say + or - 10 yards to what you get after using SS X 2.5 and be pretty close for sure then I would think

here is a recent screenshot of a session I had on a GC2 launch monitor.

just looked up my fitting numbers from last week

I had one at 105.9 mph that carried 266.8

To be fair I have almost ideal high launch and lowerish spin #'s (2400 and 14*)

And as earlier poster have said, spin is huge. I play with a lot of guys with my swing speed but am past them by 20-25 yards a lot

i average around 108-112 and usually drive the ball around 275 with roll.theres no need to lie about yardage especially if you can hit it past 250.like someone else said, even a 250 yard drive (in the short grass) gives you a desent chance to birdie most par 5's.have i hit one 300? most definatlely but it had something to do with a elevated tee box and a nice bit of wind on a dry course

My rule of thumb has always been that driver carry equals twice 9-iron carry.

My swing speed is 105 with the driver.

My 9-iron carry is 120 yards, and my driver carry is 240 yards.

Of course, I am still using a 43", steel-shafted driver!?
That's actually very close to accurate. I wonder if I am hitting the 9 iron exceptionally well, if my driver will fly an extra 10 yards!

In all honesty, I generally get about 240 - 250 carry at roughly 100 mph. Obviously, I get some good roll, and even better roll since I play a slight draw, but my carry isn't spectacular.

What it boils down to is accuracy. If someone could hit it 280 carry, but hit the fairway 3 out of 14, then they are just in trouble. If i can hit it 240 carry with roll, but i'm in the middle, i leave myself with the best shot possible. Accuracy is far more important than carry&distance.
Well if that's true I need a new driver. I carry my driver like 240-250 on a good drive but my 9iron like 130-135.

Even just using carry can be impacted because you have wind and altitude and elevation change from the tee box to the fairway all impacting it. Most of the guys who "swing 105 and carry it 265" probably live in Denver. Watch the Accenture match play out in the desert. I can assure you at sea level Mark Wilson does not carry his driver 300. When they play at a place like Pebble, watch all the distances shrink. I play at exactly sea level and get no help from altitude and average about 240-250 carry with a 105ish ss.

I play at sea level on the east coast and my 104 swing gets me 230 carry when I get it on the screws. I really have no clue how the wrx'ers get the carry's they quote for their swing speeds - the numbers just don't add up for the courses I play.

Launch monitors and hitting indoors can be suspect. I had a hard time getting more than 110 ss at the store, of course I'd hit a couple buckets that day so maybe I was tired. At the range lately I have been carrying well past the 250 marker, I'm guessing 275+, and I asked the guy and he said they laser the signs. I might be swinging better than I was in the store, but thats kind of what I mean. I'm pretty sure I top out in the high teens, but I doubt I could log that number in one of those launch bays.

That is about what my SS is and I can typically drive the ball 290 - 300+ depending on the conditions. At the beginning of the year I was fighting a slice which cost me a lot of distance but lately working on a much more relaxed swing and out to in swing I have been able to play a high draw pretty consistently.

Baloney. No way you swing 100-105 with a driver and hit 290-300.
