My rule of thumb has always been that driver carry equals twice 9-iron carry.

My swing speed is 105 with the driver.

My 9-iron carry is 120 yards, and my driver carry is 240 yards.

Of course, I am still using a 43", steel-shafted driver!?
That's actually very close to accurate. I wonder if I am hitting the 9 iron exceptionally well, if my driver will fly an extra 10 yards!

In all honesty, I generally get about 240 - 250 carry at roughly 100 mph. Obviously, I get some good roll, and even better roll since I play a slight draw, but my carry isn't spectacular.

What it boils down to is accuracy. If someone could hit it 280 carry, but hit the fairway 3 out of 14, then they are just in trouble. If i can hit it 240 carry with roll, but i'm in the middle, i leave myself with the best shot possible. Accuracy is far more important than carry&distance.
Really? I hit 9i 150'ish and my driver carry is not 300. Even if I backed down to pw, it might be a stretch.
My 9 iron is about 140-145 and I am currently carrying it about 265 so I'm not sure how correct this method is.
My 9 Iron average cary is 180 yards and I'm lucky to have my driver carry more than 275-280 consistently
The most recent comment cannot be serious. I don't care who you are, you are not hitting a 9 iron 180 yards...

:derisive:These posts always make me feel so !#$! inadequate.

With a 85% Swing ~ 85-90mph on LM @ GG, get maybe 190-220 yds total on the occasional good strikes. Recently fitted with G15 12* reg flex soft tip.

Almost always lands near enough to FW to play reasonable 2nd shot though. Need another John Brown 20 yds. to get on my par 5s in 2. Senior Tee

Even with 125-130 mph SS ( that was tested 3 years ago since then I've gained about 30 lbs of muscle and close to same flexibility) and the fact I most be de-lofting my irons some, you don't think its possible. Not that it will make you believe me anymore but I hit my SW 140+ carry, and PW 170 yards as well. But to bring it in perspective I generally hit my 4 hybrid only 240 to 250 carry so again I probably de-loft my clubs especially the high irons.

This is me as well

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Just two, SW and PW I didn't even realize 3 or even 4 wedges were the norm until fairly recently. I know I need to look into a lob wedge, that should help out my game.

I am not sure where the 30 Pounds of Muscle plays into this.
I was just saying it possible I swing even faster now, especially with my irons, because I've gained strength with the same amount of flexibility.

I'm afraid it's possible for me to hit a 9 iron 180 yards if I can bend it's loft 15* to 20* strong.

Kidding aside, I swing about that fast with BS of 150-155 or so and I really have hard time carrying my drives to 260 mark.

3 launch monitor read-outs during my outdoor session from Friday...

SS ... 108.8 ... Launch Angle ... 12.8* ... Ball Speed ... 161.5 ... Spin rate ... 2808 ... Carry ... 266yds (super smooth and slow)
SS ... 112.4 ... Launch Angle ... 16.8* ... Ball Speed ... 157.0 ... Spin rate ... 4240 ... Carry ... 247yds (ugly late move through ball, big balloning NASA Satellite-like abomination, still waiting for it to land)
SS ... 111.8 ... Launch Angle ... 11.8* ... Ball Speed ... 166.5 ... Spin rate ... 2780 ... Carry ... 278yds

the middle one represents just a slight out-of-whack tempo for me, it also faded probably 25 yards off line and would have been OOB on the course.

I'd take 250 carry/270 roll in the fairway over the guy going nuts and hitting 300yds into the trees all day, any day.

A bag of left-handed junk.

My swing speed is 105 and I can get carry of 275 when i connect well, usually carry of 240-260. I dont know why people are sitting here trying to question it. If you cant hit that far with that swing speed good for you but I have done this both on the course and trackman many times. Swing speed is relative anyways. There are some players who have lower swing speed but put more torqu and can get nice distance from their drives. Thats more along the lines of what happens to me. I take a very big backswing, have my hands all the way forward and lean into the drive and it gives great results.

It's impossible to carry 275 with 105 ss period.

I usually don't get involved in these types of threads, but this one is interesting to me. In reading over some of the responses, it is obvious that there are great differences in not only one golfer to another, but also in one golfer to himself. I will take myself for example first. My swingspeed range with the driver is at most 2 mph different on the golf course (102-104). My carry distance is between 242 to 246 yards. Even if I swing as hard as I can, I cannot swing over 105 (swing breaks down and actually causes my ss to drop most of the time). I for one have a low trajectory window and I like it that way. I play a 7.9 degree driver to stay within my window. I have tried higher lofted drivers and gained carry yards, but nothing over 255. These numbers were gathered at sea level and on a windless day with a flat fairway (and included a forced carry of 235 over a canyon). I am lucky in that I coach golf and have the latest and greatest equipment at my disposal quite often, so I know the exacts of my swing and what my numbers truly are.

In looking at some of the responses, it seems that some of you have a large varience in your own swing speed and even a great varience in your own carry yardages. For example, player x ss is between 105 and 115 and his carry yardage is between 260 and 280. I am not saying that these are false, but the low end of one doesn't add up with the high end of another. Most of the time this occurs when someone doesn't have a repeatable swing. On one swing their timing may be perfect and they hit the ball perfect (110ss and 270 carry) and then on the next swing they don't swing as hard or hit as solid (105ss and 255 carry). Unless you take most of your swings on a monitor or don't spend as much time around the mathematical side of the game, your numbers will vary quite a bit.

Your friend may have a hot driver that has a higher than normal COR. Does he also get exceptional distance from his other clubs? What club does he use from 150 yards? If the rest of his clubs play more like you'd expect, ask him if you can hit his driver on the range; that club might turn you into a driving beast too.:yahoo:

I used to register 105 on all the monitors. My carry was always 235-240 and a total distance on 260-270. This was somewhat proven when I would play my local course with really soft, slow fairways and I NEVER got it past 240. Then I would go to a more normal course and average 260.

I saw a chart once that said the average 105 swinger was carrying it 240.
I am also a 105 swinger and my numbers are consistent with his. I have a 250 yard carry over a bunker at my course and did everything I could to find distance to carry it. I went to a 12 degree driver and can sometimes carry it now, but I get hardly any roll.

In our shop we have a Foresight Sports GC2 Monitor, and while it does monitor Swing Speed it is not 100% accurate. It says that I have a SS of around 104 but I have a 275-280 carry on the monitor, so we figure the best thing to do is add about 5 MPH to the SS to get an accurate measure. My ball speed and spin though are what really matter. My ball speed is around 155mph and my spin is anywhere from 1800-2200 RPMs.

Don't always trust what a launch monitor says. Especially since they can be 'juiced' up to help sell clubs.

On fairways that have been cut and dried out for max distance. He's certainly not carrying it 278.

like i said if you ever are down in OC and want to play I am game, and you will see for yourself. Its really not that amazing, its not something i do on every shot, I usually average 260-270 total distance but when i actually hit it well with a draw it can carry 275. I love all these people that claim its physically impossible and have yet to bring a physics fact to the table that disputes this is possible, oh i forgot , because it is possible. And my driver is fully legal Ping Rapture V1 with Proforce V2 stiff. Maybe my swing speed goes up to 107, but that is the highest i have been clocked at since my surgery (microfracture left knee surgery). I stack everything forward when i swing and put my hands pretty far up so maybe that helps but it does happen. Just this last Monday I hit one 285 (total distance) uphill (not a huge grade), it had max 10-15 yds roll, its very possible.

Nobody said you can't get that much carry. All I'm saying is not at 105. I guarantee you you're swinging faster with a better smash factor. And, I'll bet on those ones you carry farther that you feel like you're not swinging that hard, and everything in your swing seemed to be perfect. But if you still want to spring for a round, let me know and when I'm down there for work I'll take you up on it.

Go to that link you posted and change the year on the right to 2011. His driving average was 278.2. You're looking at only the one tournament he played in HI this year which had some downhill fairways. He averaged less that 278 during the Masters that he won. If you Google his swing speed, it's usually between 105 and 107. During the 2011 Chevron Championship when he was paired with Tiger on the final day, they compared his 105 ss to Tiger's 118, and how the ball coming off the face of Tiger's clubs just sounds so much different than Zach's.
