Just played there myself a couple weeks ago. It is in average condition but the views make up for it!

unless the conditions got a lot better since I played last year I'm not *that* jealous...a little, that you have the day off to play golf, but not torrey pines. I was SO excited at playing TP last Thanksgiving weekend...woke up at 5am, went to wait in line, paid almost $300 for non-resident rate....and I got a total muni condition course! WTF. the fairways were beat up, the greens horrible. very disappointing, expected much more.

I experienced the same thing. Got to play it on my honeymoon since the wife plays occasionally. Woke up at 5 AM, went and waited in line with about 6-7 other cars. Got a tee time around 7 or 730ish when they opened the starters window, think I teed off around 9. Fairways were shaggy, greens were average, views were average (rainy foggy day). Glad I only paid 80 something to play the North course not 150+ to play the South. But then again it IS a muni for the majority of the year when PGA tournaments aren't going on.

I played two weeks ago when I was in San Diego for a conference. Greens were in great shape and I loved the course. The rough wasn't too long but I struggled to hit shots out of it. It's a great layout and would be a very good course without the scenery, but the views are just stunning.

Gosh, I love it. My dad and I were planning to take a trip out to Cali and play there, but it didn't quite work out. Hope I can make it at some point - had a MAGICAL time at the '08 Open.

I forgot the name of the grass, but the type of grass at TP really catches your club, even if it's not too long. compare to some other grass that may be long but not as punishing.

The rough at TP is brutal! Even when it's not super long your ball falls right to the bottom, making it a challenge just to find.... when you do find it, swallow your pride, take a SW and just get it back into the fairway. I have made the mistake of wasting 3-4 strokes in the left rough just trying to advance the ball toward the green with a longer club!

I used to work at the Scripps clinic there back in the late '90s. There is no way I'd pay the $$$ they want for either of those courses now.
I think I paid $12.50 as a SD resident back then.
Beatiful views, and the south course is a butt kicker, but they are way overpriced now.
Have fun and I hope it's in good shape for ya.

Hi RainShadow! Good to see you dude - I see you moved out of Sequim. The city of SD has to pay for the multi-million $$$ renovations somehow - they're not exactly hurting for tee times even with the elevated prices. Residents pay $50 or so now, I believe.

Kind of makes me wish that when I first swung a golf club at the par 3 course in Mission Bay when I was 14 that I would have stuck with the game and got in a few hundred rounds at TP when it was still so inexpensive.

Yeah, I know the had to pay for all that stuff, I know the locals were pretty steamed for awhile. I think they promised the mens club that the increases for residents would be temporary LOL.
Enjoying PR? Nice change in the weather, eh?
Alot more courses over here on this side of the sound. Still Wa. weather, though it's been nice lately.
I sure miss the SD weather!

Played it last Friday. Beautiful views, good golf course. They had cut the rough way down and did some work in the fairways, so everything on the course was a little brown. The greens were in good shape. Had a great time!
[/quote]
They are actually widening the fairways right now. I guess they were the most narrow in all of the PGA tour and so they were asked to fix the problem. In the meantime, the new fairway (old rough) is a little browned out during the transition.

Torrey Pines is an awesome course, but you have to come in with realistic expctations. It's not Pebble Beach and is actually in great condition if you consider how much traffic it gets. As a local, I can play the North Course for $30 and South for $47.

Residents its about 45-50 during summer hours. If i were an out of resident trying to play it, I would find someone who is a resident and get them to pay for it. The prices for out of state is robbery.

I am a resident and cannot buy a discounted rate for out of towners. I suppose I could pay for a tee time and let someone else play under my name, but it wouldn't be worth losing my resident card to earn a few bucks.

this is disappointing...

I'm headed to S.D on Saturday and was hoping to play TP. Someone here suggested other courses for similar money in better condition.

Perhaps I'll give that some more thought.

The conditions are still well above average for San Diego courses and the pictures posted earlier in this thread are indicative of typical conditions. Because San Diego has year around golf and rarely needs to reseed due to change in seasons, the conditions are never going to be the best in the US. The greens are almost always solid though.

I play Torrey at least once a week, and unfortunately they just punched the South course and it's not in very good shape at all. They've cut the fairways and rough way down and it seems to be burnt and dried out. Torrey is a fickle place because the can get it to PGA tourney conditions (obviously), but it doesn't play that way the whole year, especially in the summer.

If you want to hit up a great track, head east to Barona, phenomenal course and conditions. They've also hosted the Nationwide Final Tournament there, so you know its a great track.

Used to live near Torrey in the late 1980"s and remember paying $14.00 for 18 holes on the South. What a great value although we had to go straight from the bars to Torrey on a friday night and find the last car that pulled in. He would tell me his number in line then I would wait for the next car and tell him my number and then crash till dawn and wait for my foursome to show up and then head for breakfat and then get in line with your number and burly gruff Bill, the starter, would take your $14.00 and you would request either the North or the South. South usually harder to get on. Those were the days. My buddys and me would rotate so you only had to do this 1 or 2 times a month. Any body on here that remembers those days, please opine.

Journey is where it's at anywhere in or close to SD for that kind of money.
Played there Thursday and it was in great shape.
They shut the course down until the middle of October for re-seeding.
Highly recommend getting on when it opens back up, it will be in phenomenal condition.
