We just announced a series of OPEN tournaments at Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton, OH. I'm not sure if any of you are interested but I thought I'd post a link to the events:

http://www.miamivalleygolfclub.com/tournaments/

The events are all scratch contests and include:

Match Play Championship - 36 Hole Qualifier (top finishers win prizes) then Top 16 advance to match play (match play qualifiers win prizes)

36 Hole Stroke Play Championship

ABCD Scramble Championship - Enter as an individual. We'll have a draw party for ABCD teams + auction. Play as 8-somes from the tips.

Fall Invitational - 2-Man Teams: Day 1 is 1 Best Ball, Day 2 is Both Individual Scores + 1 Best Ball (prizes for daily scores + overall winners)

We may add a few events (including a senior and net event soon).

For those who haven't played it, MVGC was the site of the last PGA Championship that was contested in Match Play format in 1957. It's a Donald Ross design.

taking a family trip to Walhounding OH 4th of July weekend, anyone have any good public courses within a 30-40 drive that's worth a try?

Apple Valley hands down. Great track one of the best in the area if not the best

The golf course overall was in great shape, pace of play was a bit slow but it was Saturday morning, on a holiday weekend so that was to be expected.

good deal I haven't made it up that way yet this year!

I browsed a few pages of this thread and couldnt really find my answer -

I'll be in Columbus September 3rd driving up to Toledo for the Solheim Cup....looking to play a round in Columbus or on the way to Toledo that morning. Any recs for public access courses or some privates that I may be able to get reciprocal privledges if my pro called over to? Obviously, Muirfield Village, OSU Golf Club - Scarlet and The Golf Club would be nice, but I am not holding out hope for those (unless someone knows otherwise on reciprocals there).

Thanks!

For those in and around the Columbus, Oh area, Lancaster Country Club has just sold to an unknown.  The club sent out a notice to the membership last week effectively saying that the Clubhouse is closing this week, the pool is now closed, but, the golf course is open until Mid-September.  Their membership is still good between now and then (must still pay cart fees) but, the course is now open to the public until September 15.  After that, all members are basically told to remove all their personal belongings and the future of the property is at the whim of the new owners.

Sad story as this is a Donald Ross Design (more or less) and was established in 1909.  Club was member-owned and private until about 2013.  Had some financial difficulties at that time and went into receivership to the bank that had the mortgage.  A few months later, a group of 3 members bought the Club from the bank and tried to keep it in its traditional state.  Since then, the public has been allowed to play at certain times, the restaurant was open to the public off and on.  Essentially it turned somewhat semi-private depending on who you asked.  Couple of the owners passed away but were each replaced by other members of the Club.  Problem was (as we've seen many times before) successful businessmen thought their talents could easily carry over to the golf business.  The owners were active golfers but know nothing of the business.  Spent money and made very little if any return on their investment.  Over the last 8-9 years, membership has dwindled, dining was going down, pool and rounds dropped also.  Smaller town and not a lot of membership potential for $450 (ish) in dues per month.  Good course but not great.  Decent condition.  Started getting rid of key personnel from GM's to Golf Pro's until, eventually, a skeleton crew and a college kid running the Golf Operations.

I am intimately familiar with the Club and most of us, including the membership could see the writing on the wall years ago.  Great that a small group pooled their own money to keep it going but, no way that could last.  Oddly, their reasoning for selling out was the lack of rounds due to Covid (including lack of membership).  Being in the Golf Business and, as most are aware, this has been a great past 2 years for the golf course industry.  Rounds up, memberships up, spending up etc.  Not sure why that was so polar opposite for this Club.  Don't know if we'll ever know for sure.

Word is, moving forward. the Clubhouse and all amenities will not reopen under new management but, the course will in some form.  I've heard all 18 holes and also just 9 holes will open.  Public play moving forward.

Just an update since I know many of you are familiar with this old school Ross course
