graphite iron shafts

considering steel

im 54 and swing a driver 95mph. hit a 7 iron 155-60, slow backswing with smooth transition,8hcp. i've played graphite reg. for as long as i can remember. i now play cally edge with graphite and get some inconsistant distances, my pro thinks it might be the graphite. so any opinions or ideas on what kind of steel shaft?

I'm the same age as you and I'd say go for better graphite rather than steel, Aerotech Steelfiber are very good and consistent, I play Fujikura e380 and I love em. I think the transition to steel will not be as easy as you think and could cause joint issues, etc.

True Temper GS-95.

I have them in my MP-63s and love them. Odd combination, I know. But I don't want to look down at a shovel at address and I'm a believer that a more forgiving shaft is better than a more forgiving club head.

I should add that I'm 53 and these shafts have a great feel, have a dampening effect similar to graphite, and are very easy on the hands and joints. However they are also very stable, and both distance control and dispersion have been excellent.

Joint issues are no joke. Before I switched, I would only play 9 holes, because that's all my body could take.

I said goodbye to joint problems.
Had to bite the bullet though.
The water you drink pushes the oil out of your joints.
The fish you don't eat, does nothing to replace the oil your joints need.

You have to put the oil back in there by drinking it (teaspoon) mixed with some milk (2 teaspoons) on empty stomach
first thing in morning.
Wait thirty minutes and then eat normal breakfast.
This forces your stomach to metabolize the oil into your body i.e. joints, eyes, ears and skin.

This guy gave him and his wife arthritis (which everyone has signs of by age of 23) and then cured
both of them. He was in his 70's and needed no eye or ear prescription.

I've seen people with crooked fingers get the dexterity back! Takes a five month commitment to see and feel new again.
We stopped consuming fish oil in the 1950's when man made vitamins came out.
That's when most cancer's started showing up also......

I'd agree here that he should look for a better graphite shaft.

I'd add a recommendation for the Aldila VS-Proto iron shafts, and you might want to consider stiff instead of regular. They are still a very good shaft but more reasonably priced than the steelfiber. They have 85gm and 100 gm weight shafts to choose from. I'm using the 100's in stiff with ~160 7 iron carry.

+3 on the graphite shafts. Too many golf pros have preconceived notions that graphite shafts are inferior to steel in irons. I followed one of these guys' advice once and paid the price. They may know quite a bit about the golf swing; that doesn't mean that they are equally knowledgeable about equipment.

Shoulder and elbow issues at 56, so I'm going to steel fiber in a set of i20s. I have demoed the 95 and 110 and love the consistency and feel and the added distance is just a benny. The swing speed has stayed pretty consistent at 87-88 with the 6 iron, but with the steel fibers it is up to 89-90. This will definitely help with the longer irons. Stay with the graphite and go with a higher quality product, steel fiber, UST or Aldila.

I was looking to replace my irons last fall and stumbled across a great deal on some Nike VR Pro Cavities with project X 5.5's. I have been much more consistent with my iron shots this year. Bought them off the rack and wasn't fitted. I'm 6'-3 and the irons might be 1/2" to 1" to short. I occasionally skull them as a result. I have had no pain issues in any joints to this point. I just turned 53. I don't know that I am getting any more distance due to the graphite since my clubs are as much as 4 degrees stronger than my previous set but I do like the project X's. On the other hand my son has a Nike VR Pro driver with the project X shaft and when I have hit it I haven't particularly liked it.

I started using graphite iron shafts nearly 10 years ago due to a elbow spur - I am now 52 years old. I had to have them made for me as graphite shafts in irons were not popular . We used UST shafts - stiff V2. I am also 6'4" and without really long arms and after being fitted the clubs were made 3 degree upright and 1 inch long. I went from a 20 handicap to a 10 in one summer with the new clubs. Partially due to the fact that I was able to play more, and practice without elbow pain. I just gave up those 10 year old clubs a week ago and purchased the new G25 pings - also fitted 1 inch long and 5 degree upright - shafts were ping 189 tipped one inch. Have only hit them once- shot a 74 three days ago - but they feel sweet !! So +1 for the graphite shafts in irons- enjoy the game.

I play both graphite and steel irons.

Graphite iron feels smoother, softer and easier to load.

Steel iron , definetely is the opposite of graphite.

Lots of good replies in this thread. Agree about VS Proto iron shafts. I got them when i was recovering from an arm injury three years ago. After then trying some of the well known, more expensive graphite iron shafts, i have come to believe that the VS Proto 100 shafts are as good as any, and very good value.
