Favorite course in Phoenix?

My favourite club is Whisper Rock where I was lucky enough to get to spend a fair amount of time at in my mini tour days. My favourite course is Desert Mountain Outlaw, that thing gets running hard and fast and is an absolute blast to play. My favourite daily fee or public course is the Raven at Verrado, a close second and probably a controversial vote because a lot of people don't love it (or like the course just fine but hate the green fee) is Troon North Pinnacle. Although I must say, I started playing there as a kid when there were no houses on the property yet and it was a better experience back then.

I'll second Southern Dunes...really good course. Talking Stick North is also a really solid golf course. Eagle Mountain is decent, I wasn't a huge fan, but the guys I played with really liked it...resort style, everything kicks back towards the fairways. EM was running a deal when we played it...all you could golf for like $175 or something like that.

 • 2 weeks later...

I lived in Scottsdale for years and have played all of the courses in the area.

Top 5:

1. Quintero (Former private course now open to the public - By far the nicest public option, given it's private design focus)
2. Troon North - Monument
3. We-Ko-Pa - Saguaro
4. Boulders
5 Grayhawk - Talon (Most recommend Raptor but the layout and greens aren't as enjoyable)

Runner-up. Wildfire - A level bellow my top 5 - Prefer the Faldo course.

Others -
1. TPC Stadium - Not worth the money. Very average course.
2. Talking Stick - Flat and average
3. Phoenician - Short resort course (Fun)
4. Gainey Ranch - Short resort course (Fun)
5. Kierland - The most boring and over rated course in Scottsdale.
6.Starfire -Glorified municipal course.
7. McCormick Ranch - Glorified municipal courses with more traditional layouts.
8. Eagle Mountain - Good economical option. Standard AZ desert layout.
9. SunRidge Canyon - Good economical option. Standard AZ desert layout.
10. Camelback Resort - Traditional course layouts, average condition.

Just got back from there a few weeks ago. Raven at South Mtn was incredible!!! Paid only $54 and greens were rolling at least 12! Had the pleasure of playing Desert Mountain which was impeccable. Also got stuck playing TPC Champions course which I thought sucked big time! Was in terrible shape, heard/saw planes landing above you all day and just thought it was horrible. Would have preferred playing Raven again instead.

I agree with @Thrillhouse choices. I would be living in Desert Mountain :) if it weren't for family. Also, I suggest the short Par 70 Rancho Manana course in Cave Creek, when its in great shape. But, bring a solid long iron game and enjoy and some great views. Leave your driver in the trunk. :)

I really enjoyed WeKoPa, Cholla and Saguaro but I might give the edge to Saguaro. I play there a fair amount when I am visiting as I get a great deal using the OB card (OB Sports manages WeKoPa and my home course in NM-Sandia). I saved over $300 playing 36 holes per day for 2 days (36 at WeKoPa and 36 at Eagle Mountain) using the reciprocal rates the card offered. Check out their deal on the WeKoPass card it might be worthwhile for you: wekopa.com and at Eagle Mountain: Eagle Mountain Pass. OB also manages many other courses and depending how long you will be in the Phoenix area, or if they have courses where you live, it might be worthwhile: OB Sports Course Directory. The Pro at our local Muni said he played the Raven Golf Club Phoenix and said it was fabulous. Lots to chose from, good luck and have fun.:drinks:

Is Saguaro walking only? Or just designed with walkers in mind?
It is not walking only. It is designed with walking in mind, the tees are close to the greens and there are paths from tee to fairway. If you want to use one of their speed carts, it is no extra charge. ha ha! (no discount for walking).

It is a pretty strenuous walk though, due to elevation changes.

I've been there. GREAT course!! Last time we were there, couple years ago.

I was wondering through the proshop, not really noticing anyone coming in. Out

of nowhere, I hear the guy at the register say, "morning Mr. Cooper, if you are ready,

you are on the tee.

I turned around to see Alice Cooper standing there in golf attire! Seemed like a nice

guy. Not very tall. I'm 5'-9" with shoes on and I think I had him by a few inches! :drinks:

No love for Las Sendas? Not on the same level as some of the other desert courses, sure, but some great holes and a fun, challenging layout with nice greens. Lousy range, though

I hated this course! We played a couple of Gateway tour events there and I struggled a lot. There's a par 5 on the front, 7 or 8 that is top 10 worst tee shots I've ever seen. I have a feeling I might like this course from the middle tees. I just didn't like hitting driver to tiny targets with desert rocks and gravel on both sides. Very pretty, but don't bring a new set of clubs to this place! LOL!
