Real samurai ,, uhm putter.

Wouldnt it be crazy great .. ?
Samurai sword uses 2 type of metal

steel , fold them 200 x to even out the carbon content , then softer iron embeded on the back for ductility , forged them together. Fine fold lines are visable .

Now wouldn't it be great if someone fold the metals 200 X , and forged it or mill it into a putter? I see this type of putter worth 1000's of dollars . But some of the collector putter only using "normal " metal costing 1000 + dollars.

current Knifes manufacturer already does this folding commonly.

Probably useless in terms of functionality as a putter, but wouldn't it be crazy great to collect ?

---- some articles

Hard Steel, Soft Steel

Modern knives are judged by the amount of carbon and other components in their steel. The higher the carbon content, the harder the steel. However, too much carbon makes the steel brittle. Too little carbon, and the steel is too soft to hold an edge. Discount store knives generally are made from low quality stainless steel, or some steel with too little carbon to make a good blade. Also, the carbon content is uniform throughout the blade. Thus, the steel is just as hard on the edge as in the middle and at the top.

Damascus steel, on the other hand, exhibits many different qualities. For example, a good Damascus blade contains different steels with high nickel and high carbon content.

An avid outdoorsman, Ron Duncan got frustrated with discount store knives while elk hunting in Colorado. He had a brand new hunting knife made by a well-known company, but it dulled well before he'd finished field dressing an elk.

"A good knife should be able to field dress three or four elk without resharpening," Duncan said. "You can do that with the knives I make."

To find the right combination of qualities, Duncan has used steel from an amazing variety of sources. Automotive leaf springs contain good knifemaking steel, but he also loves to use large circular saw blades or large bandsaw blades discarded from sawmills. Woven steel cable makes a good knife that will have a unique, highly desirable pattern.

thats cool.

But wouldn't it be better if someone procure the folded billet from the knife forging company, finely folded. Give it to either Byron or TP mills and shape the the "answer " they want? Or the more "capabale" putter making company doing it?

I mean, that would be truely One of One unique. Nobody can make the one the same. Now thats worth collecting.

Folded by Dama, shaped by Byron ... Yummy..

I mean those guys dont really have good shapes and concept a really experienced putter manufacturer would do.

Personally If I am to buy one. and have the money like Chris . I would want something from a trusted putter manufacturer offering different exortic materials ... Finely folded, not block folded. to show the truely unique fine grains. Each piece would be different, each piece would be truly unique. But thats just me.Nobody have the same folds. same feel . Every putter have its very own Character and spirit. With exortic type of metal mixtures.wuuuuu !

And handmade Burred Cork Grips... like the ones we used in fly fishing.

Just a thought .. haha

Yeah. do you know the samurai or chinese ancient use human bones( even currently they do that, because the bones have some chemicals to make the forging or annealing proccess better.. something like that) to assist in forging process and some even use their own blood to seal the spirit..

How creepy :p

but your soul is bound to the putter . how bout that hahaha

Tad Moore put out a very limited number of Damascus steel Anser style putters a few years back. GORGEOUS!

There is someone on this board who has one, can't think of who it is.

If you read this and have one, please post pics.

LaMont in AZ

LaMont...I should have just asked you to refresh my memory. Tad Moore's Damascus Putter is the one I was trying to remember. :drinks:

Asthetics aside, why would you want a hardened steel? The goal for most of the putter manufacturers are to get a soft feel. That needs a softer steel. That is why the premium putters ding and damage so easily.

The second part of this is that the harder steel requires much stronger tooling to mill it. The machinist will have to change out bits more often, adding cost as well.

I remember the Tad Moore Damascus steel putters. They were beautiful. But my goal in a putter is to transmit feel and a softer steel will help that more than hardened steel.

Thats why ancient sword are never forged from a single kind of material.

They mix materials to be ductile yet hard. and to be extremely easy to sharpen and keep sharp. Current forger use even metal from automotive springs and bomb shell cover for their special properties.

It should be therefore possible to fold materials that is both not easily ding yet soft. Or crisp yet soft. totally unique.
