Scotty Cameron 009 vs. Byron Morgan DH89: A side-by-side comparison

Great comparison pics Tai! Maybe if you have some spare time one day you could do some comparison photos of your 009 SSS and the Rory Nike proto 006. I think that would make for an exciting comparison especially given all the requests for the 006 and Rory's success. Perhaps you could even do a group shot with the DH89 in there too. Thanks.

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Tai - is the paintfill on your 009 a DIY job or Custom Shop? That's probably the nicest 009 I've seen as far as stamping/finish/paintfill is concerned.

Thanks Tai! For some reason I must have overlooked that - was probably on my reading list and an unexpected work call interrupted me :to_become_senile:

I want a 009 so bad, might just have to get one and ignore the price considering how much I spend on golf already.

Bump this thread. I know I go back to it at least once a year and there are some here that are new to Golfwrx. Tai did a great job in this comparison. The only thing I'd love to see is a little more of an apples to apples comparison. I think if both putters had minimal hand work the differences would be almost negligible. Since picking up my newest lefty DH89, I have looked at all four of them a little more closely and can see the differences in hand work from putter to putter. So Tai if your reading this, find a DH89 that doesn't have the Tai treatment and give us more of your great insight. ;)

It was a good idea to bump this thread as the content is great.

In these days we have a few other manufacturers offering this timeless putter shape, most of them can be customised, something that is not that easy with a 009. Although I have seen so many pictures of amazing 009 (including Tai's) I believe that I will walk the route of a custom putter instead, but who knows. In the meantime, I'm the happy owner of a three wonderful alternatives that are helping me to sink a lot of golf balls.

You are correct. I was fortunate enough to buy a "raw" 009 that is currently in the works. It is raw and un-shaped, I wish I had a picture of it, but it's very similar to a raw DH89.

This is a picture of a raw 89 that I took as a comparision to show how much hand work was done to another 89 I had made, this is the putter that is shaped to what Byron now refers to as the "Tai treatment". The 009 raw head actually is a little more angular that this head, but very similar.

Also, there isn't an apples to apples.. there are going to be subtle differences from each craftsman, and that's the point of all of this. The subtleties and personal touches from them is what makes these putters so special. I don't want my DH89 and 009s to be identical.. much like I don't want my 009s to all be the same. I like the little variations between the heads, that's what makes them so unique and is essentially what I'm paying for. My 1-off Rory has a lot of hand shaping and also has a similar but different look to it. I actually wish I hadn't submitted this article to GolfWRX to post because I took some really great pictures showing the differences that look like absolute crap in this "article" that has been posted.

This is such a great collection!

Having those subtle differences among all of them mean that every putter has its own personality. From this image I can see easily that the putters on the borders have different necks to the ones in the centre. Is there any big difference in toe hang? Do they feel different when used?

Thanks Proto JA ;) They all have subtle differences, I don't like to have too many of the exact same putter, usually just the same specs I was fit to. Each of them is slightly different, whether it be toe hang, alignment aid, shaping etc. I like to be able to switch it up from time to time to a head shape I like but with slight differences. I always seem to come back to the standard 009, but the long neck 009 was in the bag for a while, and then switched to a higher MOI Squareback shape that worked really well for a long time.

In regards to your specs (And putter fitting in general) - where do you stand on putter swing weight? Is it important or is it better to focus on overall weight? The reason I ask is because heavier grip weights (along with the advent of counterbalancing) seem to go against the logic of focusing on swing weight.

I like a heavy swing weight. When I got fit for my SB+N there is a Pistolero on there, it's a heavy grip, they added weight to the head to bump the SW up due to the heavy grip. The static weight also went up, really love the feel of a heavy putter though.

I feel like for the last two years I've been on an endless path trying to find the right 009, haven't seen the look I'm looking for yet other than one I was sadly outbid on. I will keep trying though.

If you're specifically looking for an 009, I'd register for TCC and put up a WTB ad. Those guys are a great resource and you don't have to worry about authenticity etc. as much. If your needs/wants are specific and rare, you might have to be willing to pay for them (stamps, welded neck, rare finish etc.)

Option B is to get a Byron - fit and finish is not as consistent as SC's are. But if Byron takes his time, his craftsmanship and the value are excellent.

If your heart is set on an 009, I'd wait and get it.
