The Top-10 Announcers in Golf

More importantly about the Euro tour guys, they don't operate under the belief that air time is something that needs to be filled with words at all times. GC mucks it up when they have Steve Burkowski or Mike Ritts going to and coming back from commercials. You have 5-8 minutes of announcers who use an economy of language, followed by or preceded by someone who feels as though he is being paid by the word. They are nails on a chalkboard compared to Laidlaw, Donnelly, et al.

yes that is a good point about the Euro tour announcers... if someone hits a bad shot guys like Johnny Miller, Faldo, Nantz etc spend 5 minutes talking non-stop about how bad it was, what he did wrong, etc. On the Euro tour they just say something like "Well then. Not his best effort." and move on. I love the economy of language.

Great minds think alike, I guess. I agree with most of both lists although not necessarily with the ranking order (Berman is right on though). I would probably replace Rankin with Faldo.

i think faldo is top 15. the problem is he mumbles uncontrollably at times, almost swallowing his own tongue while he drips saliva over himself. he doesn't know when to stop. and is SO non-committal, which i hate.

example:

nantz
"nick, tell me about that shot he just hit into 15."

faldo
"well you're right jim. he hit it didn't he? looks like he just.... right there, play it back, now hold it, yep he just..... well hello hello hello..... right there at impact didn't he?"

wtf is that nick?

A word of advice for the op. When poting a list of top 10 anouncers dont lead in with Nantz, you lost all credibility with anyone with an ounce of taste right there. Faldo anywhere on that list is another crime against golfing sensibility, but number 1????
I was wondering if I'd be the only one here who simply cannot stand to listen to Jim Nantz wax poetic in his smarmy fashion, because he just loves the sound of his own voice. And I'm also sick of Faldo & his cockney mumbling. Thank you!

When I hear the music start on the masters coverage signalling another Nantz syruppy stroll down memory lane I usually go make a coffee or something.

I actually like Gary McCord and David Feherty. They add what the golf it self isn't able to provide. Humor and some stupidity - all good fun,

When it comes to being knowledgeable my least favourite ones are.

Brandel Chamblee, since he seems to know nothing about the golf swing or physics. One analysis even more stupid than the other.
Johnny Miller, since he's just making things up as he goes along. Well since his shot ended up too far right he must have done this. Adapting his analysis to fit what actually happened, not based on knowledge - nor observation. Then he very often criticizes players for doing things he himself has been praised for - like lowering/squating.

Nick Faldo, since I think he really should know more than he seems to do and he very often says things that just aren't true. Draw some lines "on the screen" and you can easily prove him wrong. Otherwise I find him quite enjoyable.

This is what I "disagree" with, but genrally I agree with what is mentioned here. If only possible through cognitive dissonance ;)

Please forgive me for my lacking knowledge of English.

I like Judy Rankin. No nonsense and knows her stuff.
Ironic that you mention Judy. I was watching the LPGA this weekend and kept thinking," what a class act". I used to love the TNT crew of Andy North, Bobby Clampett, Billy Krazert, Zinger and Mike Tirico. Throw in Feherty, Dottie Pepper. These guys get it. By his commentary, you would swear Johnny Miller never hit a poor shot in his life. Kuchar even touched on that point in his interview with Feherty. Golf is many things but what stands out for me is its ability to connect you with reality! It is amazing how some former pros lose touch with it.
