Looking for Golf League Ideas

Recommended Posts

How are the golf leagues that you guys play in run - are there any games/formats that you use that you find particularly fun? I've run a league for the last 4 years and like to keep things fresh, although I think we have a solid format. Our basic setup is this:

 • 2-man teams (10-12 teams in the league), Round-robin format
 • Every week is a match against another team
 • Each match is 2 points per individual match (low HCP plays low HCP) plus 1 point for team low net
 • Closest to the Pin every week
 • Modified Skins format every week (handicaps are modified, so not based on your actual handicap)
 • 3 weeks are dedicated to a Ryder Cup format

The main issue is that after the round-robin and Ryder Cup is accounted for, we have 4-5 weeks that we have to fill. The past couple years we have done a team tournament, but would like to mix it up a bit this year.

Just looking for ideas if you have any!

That is a really cool format, I like it. Might have to see if we have anything klike that around my local area.

The league I just let (scheduling issues) has been two man teams, the low guy from team A plays against the low guy from Team B, and the high HC guys play each other, with HC. Match play, normal stuff. We then score a team best/better ball one team against the other. 1 pt each hole, ties get 1/2, 3 points for the low net in each match, 3 pts for the low best/better ball net. Total of 36 points, and the ability to pick your partner up in the team match if he's having a bad day.

In our Mens League we do a few different things:

1) Most Popular - A season long Ringer Board. Track your best score on each hole throughout the year. Winning score is usually in the low 60s, we also have a side pot that goes to anyone who hits 59! Holes are handicapped to make it fair and keep high cappers in the hunt for the Ringer Board Championship Trophy

2) Callaway Scoring, 2 man blind teams.

3) Best ball vs the 2 Pros. Handicapped.

Driver - M2/KuroKage xstiff
3 wood - TS2 16.5/KuroKage xstiff
Hybrids - Titleist 918 3/4
Irons - Mizuno 223, Modus 105 Stiff
Wedges - Vokey SM8 - 51, 56, 60
Whitlam/Gauge Design - Coldstar Devon ETBW
Bag - Sun Mountain C-130

Club - WoodenSticks Golf Club

Now that's a cool idea, I'm gonna have to suggest that to my friends for this summer when we get together and have our "unofficial" tour.

Titleist 585h 21*

I like that ringer board idea too!

My league has 4 flights (ABCD) each flight has 10-12 members.

Each week you play another member in your flight, handicapped scores. You get 3 points for a win, 1 for a loss. If tied we go to the card and the best score on the highest(er) handicapped hole wins. If your match is absent, you must beat the worst posted score in your flight that day for 3 points.

Season is in halves. First half flight point winners play second half winners at final outing, all flights are in it for the championship. Since it's handicapped anyone can with the championship. Past two years champions came from D flight.

You don't have to play in the same group as your match (except in championship) and it's all stroke play.

Each week A-B Has a skins game as does C-D, plus a prize hole (long putt, CP, etc). The league rakes the skin pot $2 per man, per week. It keeps us afloat.

Between halves we have a 2 club and a putter all skins day.

We have two away outings first half and final, and a home outing with a giant barbeque.

Even though it's a nine hole league, many guys play 18, and my group usually gets in 18 + 9-18 more in an all skins shootout.

We have a blast!

One league... 8 teams, 8 on a team, split into 4 flights based on HDCP (two partners per flight). 2 vs 2. 2 points per hole. Low individual, low team net. Get a mid year team winner and an end of year team winner. Each of those two teams flight plays each other in the end of year playoff. Team with highest score wins year.

2nd league... Modified stableford scoring (0 pts dbl bogey, +1 bogey, +2 par, +5 bird, +8 eagle, +11 albatross/HIO, -1 3over, -2 4over, -3double par). Go out with anyone because all you're doing is getting points. No teams, more social. Score + hdcp = points for the week. End of year champion gets trophy for year with name on it. (That was me last year) :)

The last league I ran was based on a modified stableford system. With a triple bogey stroke limit.
Indvidual play.
Wasn't started as a mixed league but there were a couple of ladies who were looking to play in a league and we said come on. (Actually made the league more enjoyable.)
First foresome to show teed off.
Had two rules...
fix your ball mark and another that some lazy sob didn't.
no slow play.

OB was take a penalty stroke and go drop one where it went out. (let's go there is beer to be drank)
Played winter rules everywhere. (fluffy duffy but ball never in hand)
Lost ball... take a stroke penalty drop one where you think it should be. (more like a two minute rule.)
ball in divot... ground under repair. move it.
Pick it up that's good. (Common sense required. Not said to somone with a two footer for birdie. Skin or side bet implications. As a golfer you know when a "that's good" is not a good call. Even if it is too your benefit. So you're required to say; no) Heaven forbid mixing match play and stroke play rules!

Closet to the pin. (par or better) (not optional)
Skins. (optional)

RInger deal is a great extra.

Mystery Twosome - pairing is done after the rounds.

Thirds - Each player picks 2 names the 1st name will generate the score on the 1st 6 holes, 2nd name will generate the score on the 2nd 6 holes and the picker uses his own last 6 holes score. The 3 put together forms the 18 hole score. Easy to do on a simple excel sheet. This was a pretty cool game because 2 others were counting on you, while you count on yourself for the closing stretch.

I've run the 2 man matches versus other pairs, always seemed to be pretty well received.

This past year we went in a totally different direction. Different format every week. Not only the game but the pairings. Single one week, 2 man the next, then 3, then 4. Always different games, shambles, alternate shots, scotches, etc. had a money list that went the entire season.

At the end of the season, top 2 on the money list were captains, and along with the 2 pros would draft a Ryder cup team of the next 20 people on the money list. Ended up being a blast

I run a league that is individual based. Each person is not require do be a member of any particular club. We use Usga caps and its net stroke play for points twice a month. Each position is awarded 1 point for playing and then a point for every player awarded to winner and down to last. Winner also gets a bonus of double the number of players. We have a trip/ tournnent that is best 4/6 rounds net with triple points awarded in same fashion as group days. And then a large final at my course. We have trophies gag gifts and a "dirty Santa" type prize system

You can do a king of the hill in that few week period - Say you have 40 guys, 5 guys get eliminated each week based on the highest score. The last week's lowest score wins the pot. Its kind of like a FedEx Cup.

We do scratch skins, handi skins, chip ins (past two lenghts of the stick from off the green - this pot rolls over ever week), pick your birdie (you pick card and if you birdie that hole you win - the birdie hole goes to the next hole each week), we do putts, long drive, GIRs, putts, eagle pool, etc.
