Top 5 Courses You have played...

Recommended Posts

I guess the assignment was to mention courses you played and really liked, for your own reasons and not because of what the experts and great players think. Many of the courses listed are very tough courses, and I wonder how many of you broke 100 when you played there, but maybe you didnt :) But the score is not the most interesting part when you visit great golf courses. And a real challenge can be a really nice experience. When I play classic courses I always play from the back tees. Golf is a struggle and its really interesting to put some pressure on yourself.
Its hard to list five courses. I am a links fan, and since there are so many american courses mentioned, I pick five european courses, but not in order:

Ballyliffins Glashedy Links, a tough Faldo designed course. That man is a really talented course designer. If you can shoot this course in the 80s when the wind is blowing, youre a good golfer.

Royal Portrush.

Royal County Down.

Ballybunion (old)

Falsterbo (since I am swedish I had to put in a swedish course. And this is a really good course and I love playing it, the only true links course in Sweden).

My top five favorite courses (not the highest ranked or most challenging or whatever -- just the top five courses I've played that I would be happy playing if they were the only five courses I could ever play for the rest of my life).

1. Minneapolis Golf Club (if I could only ever play this course for the rest of my life, I'd still be happy)
2. Alexandria Golf Club
3. Edina Country Club
4. The Wilds Club
5. Rush Creek Golf Club

Muirfield
Pebble Beach
Royal County Down
Turnberry
Yale (if this were in great condition and restored, I'd bet it would be top 20-30 in the world)

Which means these didn't make it
Spyglass (this would be next), Cypress Point, Merion, Olympic, Riviera, Los Angeles, St. Andrews, Royal Dornoch, Carnoustic, Cruden Bay, TPC Sawgrass, Kapalua, Cabo del Sol, Sherwood, The Preserve, World Woods, Medinah, Royal Troon, Royal Birkdale, Kingsbarns, East Lake

Going to Bandon for the first time in 3 weeks, so maybe my list will be changing.

Callaway Epic Speed Triple Diamond/Mitsubishi Pro White Tensei 1k

Callaway Epic Speed 3w

Honma TR21 5w
Callaway Rogue JDM 21 & 24 hybrids

Callaway Rogue ST Pro 5-AW

Added Blue Top Ridge at Riverside Casino in Iowa to my list. Couse was awesome, experience was better. We stayed the night before and the course looked pretty open all afternoon...couldn't help but look out at it every chance I got. Went to find a tee time for the 4th of July, and they were pretty booked early but they told me if I got there early, I could go out as a single before their opening tee time (7:30) So I went out as a single at 7:20 played this great course in 2:30! I was all alone most of the round! course was awesome. Great practice facility, fast but true greens. Fairways are tight and usually lined with trouble. Bunkers set in spots to make you make choices on how to approach each hole. Every green and pin placement was protected by sand or water making you consider where you were going to attack. Luckily I hit better than I had all year, hitting 12 fairways, and one other I caught a fairway bunker but was still only a short shot to the green. I caught 4 greenside bunkers but played well out of there also. I highly recommend this course. I put it right there with turtle bay and Deere run.

Royal County Down
Ballybunion
Old Head
Chambers Bay
Pinehurst No. 2

Since I have discovered Links Courses, I love them. To me, Pinehurst and Shoal Creek are very overrated. Portmarnock, Sawgrass and Waterville are great courses as well.

You may be the first person that I've encountered that I agree with on Pinehurst.

I would love to hear your reasoning. I played it in June, and I was so underwhelmed. I have played literally 5 courses in the Wilmington, NC and Mobile, AL area that were so similar. It is a straight-forward, pine tree lined, Donald Ross tricked out green course that lacks great holes. Are there any bad holes? Not really. Are there any great holes? Not at all. The scenery is boring and the greens are very overrated. It is better now that Coore-Crenshaw went back to natural areas instead of rough, but the course design lacks imagination and excitement. It was the same tee shot and second shot the entire round.

Great courses listed, its strange how (for me anyway) i really want to play courses that arent on my doorstep, for example i'd love to play some of the US courses shown on the PGA Tour. Thought it was pretty cool how alot of people in the US have listed scottish links courses which i didnt expect other than maybe St.Andrews old due to the history. I play alot of links golf and would also love to try some US links courses i have no idea what i'd pick as a first choice though.
