Scotty Cameron Teryllium Experts?

Recommended Posts

Ive been hoarding up various Camerons for the better part of the last 3-4 years, and ive always had one in the bag since i picked up my first Teryllium Long neck in what my brain keeps ensuring me was 1999.

Which brings me to my question:

I know that the older generation Teryllium putters did not have the white elastomer around the insert on the face, only within the dots on the back. What years did they have the 3 point crown stamped on the toe?

I recently picked one up (TEI3 Newport 2 Long Neck) from a fellow WRX member - and it appears to be totally orginal (including the original Royal Grip - leading me to beleive its from 98 the first year they introuduced the long neck) however i do own another "older" generation Santa fe - which does not have the crown toe stamp. Aside from this i can not spot any other descrepancy between the two putters aside from the visible mill markings on the neck.

Can any one help me out and date this bad boy??

I did try and go on the SC site but of course they do not show faces, or specify that in any of the information i was able to find.

Provided they are OTR/US releases:

- Your LN is 1st gen Teryllium (1997/1998).

- Your Santa Fe is 2nd gen Teryllium (1998). The first gen were sole stamped (engraved) with the TeI3 logo.

Some nice info in this thread:

The generations of the TeI3 putters is that the Sole Stamp is it's own, but is near the Gen 1 because only a few of the Sole Stamps were produced. Once Tiger won the Masters with one, the TeI3 engraving was moved to the face heel for the balance of the Gen 1 lines. The Gen 2 putters have the elastomer ring around the insert and no ring around the TeI3, although there are some of them that had both rings, very few but they do exist. The reason for the Gen 2 is consistent with the Teryllium 2 lines.

So correct me if any of this is wrong, but going forward it would be much easier to me if I classified it as follows:

Gen1 = Teryllium; all of these were milled by Bettinardi so that the inserts fit flush in the face (i.e. no elastomer ring) and could be sub-grouped as follows:
Gen1a: Sole stamped TeI3
Gen1b: Double-ringed heel stamp TeI3

Gen2 = Teryllium Two; elastomer ring around the insert, heel stamp TeI3 sans rings

In the past I would often refer to each different iteration as a new generation.

that's correct....... there were also a handful of Gen X or 1.5s (ring around the insert and "TeI3" logo)..... 2 day production (at max) of putters made after Gen 1s..... the story is Scotty saw them and told them to stop and only use the ring around the insert going forward.....I'm actually lucky enough to own a Gen X Del Mar II (only one I've ever seen)

Slivnek Machining and K-Tech also manufactured the Teryllium heads along with Bettinardi's X-Cel Sports. Contrary to Bettinardi fans, most of his work with Scotty was done with the Cameron Golf Intl heads and the Titleist Classic heads. Slivnek is listed on the patent with Cameron for the TeI3. While the Bettinardi fans like to claim the TeI3 because of Tiger, they are better off and more historically accurate by claiming Bettinardi's contribution with the Classic I because that head was used to win Scotty's first Major- Bernard Langer winning the 1993 Masters.

You will see more of the Gen X putters with the Pro Platinum finish, the Tour Only Pro Platinum Plus putters than as the OTR gun blue version. The rumor is less than 200-300 of these existed, so figure 100 in the PPP finish. Cool stick to have.

My theory is that the white filling around the copper insert is to cover up manufacturing errors later on its 2nd generation as it was very difficult to seamlessly fitted! There must have been many reject /leftovers from prior year. As always earlier craftsmanship will not settle for blemishes!

The first generation was milled at BOS, IIRC. Cameron and BOS hold a patent on the TeI3 insert I seem to recall. Of course I could be wrong and I am certain someone will look up the patent.

(I am on my way to the range to practice. :) )

I thought so, too. A friend who knows A LOT about Cameron putters says it was BOS. He has forgotten more than I will ever know. If he says BOS then I believe it was BOS.

I always thought Bettinardi did the First Gen TeI3's too. The story was, when BOS came in to do the 2nd Gen they couldn't get the insert to fit as tightly as Bettinardi did so they designed the insert with the polymer around it to hide any flaws / imperfections.

I guess it could have been BOS on both Generations and the polymer around the insert was simply a design change, but the "story" about Bettinardi doing the first Gen TeI3's has been around for a long time.
