Callaway 2014 Apex Pro Irons: In-hand photos

I got a chance to hit the Recoil 680 at the reange this weekend in an Apex pro head. I had ordered the Apex pro 110 and it is due in this week. After hitting the 680, I canceled my order and i'm going with a different shaft. For me the Recoil was just too stout. It felt like the walls were 2 inches thick. My swing speed is only 80-85 with a 6 iron and I just felt I couldn't feel the club head impacting the ball. I have been playing Aerotech i95s in my Epon 503's. The Recoil is a much stiffer shaft. I think I'm going to order the Apex Pro's with Pxi 5.5.

You might want to give the stock KBS Tour-V a try, which I think is an excellent shaft with great feel albeit lighter weight than other steel shafts. I odered both the APEX Pro and standard APEX with that shaft after hitting most of the options from the Callaway fitting cart.

Thank you! These are the same bounce numbers as the X-Forged. Interesting that the Apex Pros have 1* more bounce per club than the regular Apex.
Yes, but a narrower sole. Static bounce will be lower but effective bounce will be higher on the regular Apex.

Hmmm. Good point. Hadn't thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

The tour v is a great shaft. I love the feel and stability in it.

Were you able to soft step thru Callaway? I was told you could not do this.

Through the ordering system we use in Australia it is an option.

I ordered a set of Apex 6-AW for my wife and soft stepped the Recoil 660 F2 twice, hits them 1.5-2 clubs further than her previous irons! :)

You most certainly can do it. I already received a set of standard APEX irons with an S flex soft-stepped once which was confirmed on the Callaway paper work. I also oredered the same specs for the Pro, ordered from Discount Dan's, great service and prices.

You can get them either soft stepped or strong stepped 1x or 2x. I double-checked on Callaway ordering site, this advanced option is there.

This is amazing news. I want to order KBS Tour V but would prefer the Weight of the X soft stepped 1x as opposed to the S hardstepped. Thank you

Can I trouble someone take a pic of the stock grip? I was at my Local GolfMart in Del Mar and they looked like a Lamkin Crossline Grip with a grey butt section. I've never seen grips like that.

I popped down to Ye Olde Golfe Shoppe this afternoon and they have all the new Cally irons in stock. The Apex Pros are absolutely gorgeous to look at in person. I was hoping to fall in love with the X2Hot Pros, as they should be more forgiving, but the Apex Pros are just so much prettier.
Prettiest clubs on the shelf for me today, Apex Pros, S55s, tour Preferred MC, in that order. The x-forged and the Mp64s are also pretty, but I have become used to them :)
Dayum, 5 clubs that are probably all too much for me........

JB did you consider c taper as a shaft option?
I was on the fence between the c taper and tour v. There wasn't a c taper in s+ to test at the time and the tour v felt solid and I was getting strong results. I tried the c-taper in the S and its just didn't feel right. I thought it may have been a touch heavy/boardish. The one i was testing was 2 inches longer than standard and i was gripping way down so that really had a negative effect on testing. I hit the tour v in x flex and it felt great and after some mucking around with other shafts I ended up with the tour v x flex ss once. I stil may get a s+ c taper and throw it in an iron later to see if there is a big difference but for now the tour v will do.

Spot on. You can specify exactly what u want and they will make them up. The performance centre in Melbourne will take your current irons and re-shaft them if you want. I tested so irons when the new muscle backs came out and they offered to re-shaft my existing proto's from the fitting data instead of me getting a new set. So you I guess we are in the lucky country sometimes.

There has been a mix up with my shafts for the apex pro irons between my pro and Callaway. Irons turned up with the KBS tour shaft and not the tour V shaft. Needless to say he sent them straight back. I didn't even get to look at them. So there will be a week or so delay on my irons. I am happy my pro picked it up straight away and sent them back. I may have been tempted just to play the clubs. I am impatient sometimes and waiting is something I am not very good at.

Thinking of getting the apex pro's, currently game the amp cell pro's. Anyone compared the two? Will have kbs c-taper lite x flex shafts.

Is the face hotter on the Apex (given the face material) than the Apex Pro (thinned out face but no insert)? I know the lofts are stronger in the Apex model so I can't just ask which 6 iron is longer.
USGA 3 Index and I've played both. The face in the regular Apex's is definitely hotter than the Apex Pro's and has a much larger sweetspot as well. The Pro's are a tad more compact with a slightly thiner top line. Both have a very solid feel and will let you know when you miss a shot though the regular Apex is far more foregiving, produces a higher ball flight, greater distance --- at least one club more.--- at less weight overall. The Pro's are good -- but IMO the Titleist AP-2's and Mizumo's have better feel and offer more clubhead type choices in 100% forgings. Was gonna purchase regular Apex's in 5i > 8i and Pro's in the 9i > PW but after playing both now going all regulars with a G25 hybrid for 3i > 4i to save the body wear and tear. Interesting that I found the 4i in either set to be very close but have no explanation why. Maybe the shafts were not proper or something. Maybe my swing is fouled up, too. :-) Both sets are impressive but unless someone's 5i CHS is 92mph+ and play on primarily firm / closely cropped fairways the regulars are the choice. The combination of ease out of varying lies or less than ideal fairways weighs in the regular Apex favor.
