sound slot question

Recommended Posts

im looking to put a sound slot on my 1966 anser 2 this winter, but im curious how it will effect the putter...besides making an audible ping sound.

- i know it will take ~10g off the putter. im not happy about that since its already pretty light at 340g. but is the deduction in weight feel very obvious? and no, i dont want lead tape on my putter, and no, im not paying for tungsten.

- how does it effect the feel of the putter face? does it make it softer or firmer ?

- anything else i should know, before i do this >

I won't speak to the actual sound or impact feel differences - that's just too subjective for my opinion to matter and even will vary based on the ball you play. Well, to be honest, It's also not something I personally pay a lot of attention to or an aspect of a putter I can easily ignore after a few strokes if there are any differences.

But a reduction in head weight of 10 gm will be very noticeable and has the potential to have a big impact on your feel for managing the speed of the putt. Unfortunately, whether you can adjust or not and how well is not something anyone else can answer for you.

I personally love sound slots, and I think the difference in feel is so individual. Most people I've talked to seem to think it makes it feel firmer. To me, I feel like it makes it softer?

If you're already not too happy with the 340 HW of the Ping, and don't want to use lead tape, I think you're gonna be really unhappy with it after putting in the sound slot. Head weight to me, is one of the things I notice the most, and sounds like you do too.

Why not just get an Anser with a sound slot? If you don't like it, sell it. That way you won't potentially destroy your gamer.

Don't expect the sound to change. The only Ping putter that made the "ping" sound was the 1A and it was made to sound that way. Cut a slot in your Anser 2 and all you will have done is cut 10 grams or so off your putter. You won't hear anything different.

I beg to differ. I have 2 Redwoods: one with a WRX sound slot and the other without. The sound slot produces a higher pitching sound. Not the "Ping" noise the OP is referencing, but noisier than one w/o a slot. The sound slot feels firmer too, though that could be more psychological due to the sound.

I have a Titleist Newport with a sound slot and the sound isn't anything like what I was hoping it would be. I have a solid putter of my/LaMont's original design that has a better sound than the sound slot putter and it carries 10g more than the Titleist and that is noticeable. You won't get a "Ping" sound just by cutting a sound slot.

Feel is subjective, so you aren’t going to get a consensus here. My suggestion would be to try to demo a few putters with sound slots so you can see for yourself. I realize there aren’t many options out there to try, so it may be difficult to find one.

I would second the demo approach. The old MgBr Ansers w/ sound slots can be had on eBay pretty cheap.

I used to love sound slots, but anymore, prefer the solid feel and muted sound non-slotted putters provide. Especially on milled putters, I personally think it takes away from the feel.
