Traveling with clubs

So I’m going to Hawaii for 10 days. 4 on the big island and 6 on Maui. Planning on playing 5 rounds while I’m there. Debating between bringing my clubs on the plane and paying the baggage fees or to ship to the big island then bring them on the flight to Maui and then ship back home. Price is close to $300 to get them shipped. Where it would only be like $150 to bring them on the plane with me.

Any advice or what have you guys done when traveling to Hawaii?

So for half the price you can use your own clubs in paradise?

For that much money, I would carry them, unless you have a bunch of other luggage that getting from the parking lot to the ticket desk is too much of a hassle.

With a decent travel bag, traveling with your clubs isn’t a big deal. You only have them from your car to the baggage drop, then from the baggage claim to the car, and finally from the car to the hotel. For the prices they charge to ship clubs, I can’t imagine why people do that. Of course, I mainly fly Delta, and I can bring my clubs for free (combination of silver status and Amex card).

I always bring my own clubs.

I was just looking at Ship Sticks and it was $55 each way just to NC from NJ. The only other time I used them it was $49 total but that was when they first started up. It’s actually cheaper this time to check them on my flight. I may use UPS this time, but in your situation I’d definitely take them on the flight if you have a good case.

How is ship sticks still in business?

I use a soft side case but the airlines will tell you they are only responsible for breakage if you use a hard side case. The hard side cases are bigger and difficult to fit in a rental car unless you get a large car or SUV.

if im traveling by myself and have a connecting flight or just cant justify paying a premium for a larger rental car (because i use a hard case) i will use ship sticks. i try to only use them though when i have a discount code and when traveling in the continental usa. to ship internationally or to hawaii is usually around $300 round trip. thats one of the nice things about flying southwest is that the clubs fly free.

Take your clubs! Do you have a credit card that will cover airline expenses?

1 1/4 inch pine rods with PVC on both ends. Never had an issue with my cheap $20 soft bags, or any club damage.
