Is It Possible To Save Gripmaster Leather Grips?

My irons that I bought used last year came with Callaway Gripmaster grips. They came from the Australia/New Zealand market. I've decided that the leather grip just isn't for me. Knowing how expensive they can be and knowing that they're great quality grips, I'd hate to take a blade to them and just toss them as they should last forever.

Is it possible to remove these and reuse them? If so, how would one go about it?

Leather wrap with rubber underlisting is almost not worth the time and effort to try to save them. The success rate will be 50/50. Leather will soak up the solvent used to remove the grip.

Only if the grip was installed with air , then it will come off easy, but unlikely it was installed with air from the OEM.

Your in for a fight, I pulled a set a couple years ago it took hours for 8 irons.

If they are wrapped, simply unwrap the leather strips (keep the strips or sell them to me) then cut off the underlisting. If they are sown, hang it up. They're toast. The leather strips can be re-wrapped onto a new underlisting very easily (install underlisting first). seal them in a ziplock bag to keep them from drying out though.

Thanks guys. They aren't wrapped. Sounds like it's either stick with them or trash them switching to something else. I may stick with them a bit longer to see if I get the hang of them. I have a hard time trashing something that is as expensive as these that will seemingly last forever

what shafts are in the irons? maybe pull the shafts and sell them on ebay as shafts and grips.

That is a good thought. But, I can't do the work and it would cost too much to get it done.

Can you post a pick of them? I'm curious which model they are.

I've removed the "stitchback" Gripmasters before using an air compressor and solvent (turps in my case) injected into the shaft through the hole in the grip butt.

Blow some into the grip and just twist lightly as the solvent helps to detach the grip from the grip tape.

To protect the grip I wrapped them in Glad Wrap and taped off the collar and just below the grip.

A few weeks ago I removed a Gripmaster putter grip this way with no issues.

Yeah, I believe they are Roo's.

Yeah, those are the Roo grips. If you DO decide to stop using them, I would try blowing them off because the sewn Roo leather is a lot stronger than the standard rubber grip and provides a solid case to the rubber underlisting. A wrapped grip can rupture on the wrap seam, but these should take the pressure fine. I would be interested in taking them off your hands. You're not in New England by chance, are you?

I am not. I am in Minnesota.

If you have air i would try and blow them off. I doubt it will be easy, but i've had grips come off easy before.

Use solvent, and tons of it.

I pull grips all the time, even super stroke. Get solution in early, and about every 4".

Those grips are no problem.

The problem with pulling is people dont use enough solvent. Pull the beginning of the grip and get a few drops at the base.

I get why a lot of people hate pulling grips, but to be honest, they're doing it wrong. You dont need air, you don't need a needle... just a grip tool and solvent.

Where are you in MN? I have installed and uninstalled Gripmasrers MANY times. If you are close, I could possibly look at getting them off for you.

i have done quite a few and find them easier than rubber.Just inject some mineral spirits about 2 inches down from the top of the grip.The leather/underlisting does not absorb the spirits
