Looking to increase my swing speed

Handicap? goals?

Reason I ask.. if you are near scratch or better, your mechanics are likely good enough a few more yards might help you improve a little

If not..seems to be a lot of amateurs on this site obsessed with trackman numbers rather than their handicap. Nothing wrong with that, you do you. I’d just be aware that on an average course, your problem is not distance.

I am a +2 handicap, pretty consistent on hitting the center of the clubface.

I am not sure where to start to increase swing speed, should I stretch more to get better rotation, should I workout in the gym to gain strength and maybe speed, should I try some training aids? Just checking if anybody would share some feedbacks on their own experience.

SuperSpeed:

https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1425320/superspeed-golf-training-system/p91

There is a ton of specific information in that thread, but just for some quick anecdotal evidence, I was around 100-102 mph for years and after the first month I had already jumped to a consistent 105-106. I did it for 6 months (before an unrelated injury) and when I stopped I was sitting at easy 108 and could step it up to 110-111 on occasion.

Even though I didn't use the system for 6 months after the injury, I was still in the 105-106 range when I re-started, and it only took me a couple of weeks to get back to 108.

Have two other friends (all of us 0-4 handicaps) that have used it with similar results. One guy was in the 93-94 mph range and now is consistently >100, it totally changed his game and dropped strokes of his handicap.... and cost me a lot of money, lol.

First thing to do is make sure you are actually swinging the club, not pushing it, pulling it or levering it. Not just swiping at the ball with all your might. Not interfering with the swinging motion. You can't move the club faster than you can swing it. Once you are sure the club is swinging, you just need to swing it as fast as you are able to swing it. That varies a lot from person to person.

I did a study, with a sample size of one (me) to see if weight training alone could increase CHS. This past winter, with gym alone, I lost about 10-15 pounds of fat and gained about the same in muscle for a very small net gain in weight. Over the same period, my CHS (measured on Flightscope) went up from around 105-109 to around 112-114. Not bad.

I've only been consistent with my over speed training for about 2 and a half weeks so jury is still out but last week on the Trackman at my club, I was in and around 115-116 mark. My red stick numbers have slowly crept up since starting over speed as well so I'm guessing that if I stay consistent I could potentially hit around the high teens or ~120mph.

Lots of guys will talk about weights and compound lifts. That is just good advice for life health in general. I didnt hit it as far when I was in my best shape though.

I got a lot more out of doing stretching/yoga and spending a couple range sessions a week actually going and swinging as hard as possible. I did golf related stretching with my hip flexors, shoulders, core etc. I would go to the range (before I knew what superspeed training was) and I had 3 drivers: A heavy one with a headcover taped to it, a regular one and a lighter old driver. I alternated five swings of each and worked on swinging as hard as I could.

I had to train my body to swing really hard and get the timing/movements down and it trickled into the real golf game over time.

* think about speed before mechanics like long drivers do

* have a way to measure speed to figure out whether you're making progress

* optimise your launch conditions (launch angle, spin rate, etc...). You don't always need speed to gain distance

* have a way to record and measure progress. Last time I played regularly I was in the ~115mph region but on occassion it jumped up to ~125mph. This was in an era when launch monitors were much rarer so I couldn't reallly figure out what was going on and replicate what happened easily. Some experiments were also difficult to reverse/revert. Hence, over time I learnt to keep notes

* work on tempo. Obviously, the faster your tempo the faster your clubhead is going to be moving

* work on control. Speed without control is useless

* learn from many different sources (but figure out how to filter out information quickly and correctly). Different people often generate power and speed in different ways. Do what actually works and has been proven to work for you rather then what others think may work for you

* work on fitness and strength. The faster you go the better the supporting structure needs to be to control it

* experiment with equipment. Sometimes, certain combinations just click and you don't need to change your swing

What sort of workout did you do in the gym? I'm a powerlifter and have full access to anything in the gym....looking for a bump from 100  to 110..

Nothing crazy. I'm pretty lazy so I just do the usual. Deads, squats, presses, etc.
