Roberto De Vicenzo passed away

El Maestro passed away this morning at his home surrounded by his family and beloved ones. He was 94 years old. He was a great man well known for having signed a wrong score at the 1968 Masters to miss a playoff. But he is better known for his outstanding game, his humility and his gentlemanship on and off the course. He did for golf in Argentina what Arnold Palmer did in the U.S.

 

He will always be remembered for all the wins he had worldwide, his powerful long game, his masterclass touch and, mostly, his great heart.

Roberto De Vicenzo had a great life. He lived until age 94, and for a big chunk of his life he got paid to play golf. He had over 230 victories worldwide, including the British Open, two wins on the Senior PGA Tour (including the US Senior Open), and eight wins on the regular PGA Tour. He was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989.

Ironically, he will be remembered forever in golf because of the score card. Like Jean Van de Velde, will be talked about as long as they play golf in this Universe.

I don't think Roberto De Vicenzo defined himself by that single mistake, which was really made by his playing partner (although De Vicenzo didn't check his partners card against his card). His own card was correct, but when there is a discrepancy between two cards (both signed) then the highest scores is used.

 

To remember him for just that one moment is to show a lack of respect for the rest of his life. Even if he had signed the correct scorecard, he might have lost the playoff anyway. He won the British Open, and a total of 230 victories worldwide.

Agree 100%. I read a story where he got scammed out of some money at a tournament by a woman claiming to have a child who was ill. He was later informed of what happened and said "she's going to be alright? That's the best news I've heard all week." (Or it was something to that effect). We could all stand to have a little more of his attitude and perspective.
