How are the Jones golf bags?

I'm in the market for a new bag and the Jones caught my eye. Looking at the Trouper.

 

I currently have a Vessel bag and one of the zippers broke already and the legs keep sagging.

I just got the Utility Trouper for Christmas. I like the look of it a lot. It has a ton of storage and some nice convenience features, like the magnetic ball pocket. The legs work well and seem very stable so far. I like that there isn't a ton of branding on it.

As a single strap it's plenty comfortable. With two straps it is a little awkward. The two straps are comfortable enough. My issue is that because the straps are independent from each other, the bag tends to tilt towards horizontal. If I don't keep a hand on it I'm afraid it might tip.

Overall I'm happy with it and would probably buy it again. The more I use it the straps get a little better, but at this time I'd call it a complaint.

A buddy of mine has the Trouper and its a really nice bag. The one thing I noticed is that its heavy. I believe in the 5 pound range. As an older guy that likes to walk and sometimes carry, I can use all the help I need and that means a lighter bag. But if you're use to the Vessel, which I also believe is 5lbs (or slightly heavier), then the Jones would be a great choice. If you want a bag with swag, then the Stitch SL2 is another one to check out. Its 4lbs and the quality is exceptional. Its comfortable to carry as well and they have great customer service.

Thanks guys. I have that same horizontal issue with my vessel. No matter how I adjust the strap, the clubs almost fall out of the top of bag.

 

The best straps I've tried thus far have to be the Ping Or TM bags.

I've had a utility trouper for over a year and all the features mentioned above are accurate. the magnetic closure on the ball pocket is cool, wearing it as as single strap works great, but putting both straps on is very awkward. To this day, I have no idea how to wear it with both straps. I don't like that I have to use two hands to open the two storage pockets but it holds a lot, as far as golf course stuff. I do wish the bag, as a whole had a wider top, I don't like it when I have to lift clubs to let the one I just hit, to fit in the bottom. I do have midsize grips but come on. The lone putter well works well too. It's a decent bag, but if you ride more than you walk, I would consider a hybrid bag with a larger well.

Have the Trouper also. I took off the second strap and just use the single strap. Works perfectly fine for me as it's just from the trunk to the cart or range, not a walker. Grips can stick a little bit but I can deal with it since I like the rest of the bag so much.

Sounds like the Jones isn't for me. Any other models out there that have the looks, but with better functionality? I don't walk a lot, but enjoy it every once in a while.

I have the players series carry bag and love it. Very old school and of course has no stand but I really don't mind that. It is extremely light and the single strap is very comfortable. Obviously if it is wet out then picking up and putting the bag down can be a little bit of an issue, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. The quality of the bag is fantastic.

Should definitely consider the Stitch SL2. Unfortunately, it seems as if they only have one color available (white).

I have a utility rover that I absolutely love. It's perfect for a quick walking round and I can easily pop it on a cart as well. The straps on the rover are pretty darn comfortable too

Jones bags are great, but a bit overpriced for what you get in my opinion. Definitely wait for a sale or coupon. I would be interested if they made a cart bag.

Glad I’m not the only one that can’t figure out the dual straps. Love my Jones Utility, but the double straps simply don’t fit.

Are Jones bags designed for a full set of clubs, or just a minimal/Sunday set?

They have multiple types. The trouper/varsity are for a full set and both stand bags. The player is only a two way divider so it’d be much harder to have a full set.

One thing about them is that they stand by their stuff. I had a Jones carry out of warranty and an interior pocket seam ripped. They sent me a new one and said to keep the old. I've since bought the cart bag (discontinued) and the utility stand and love them each for what they are.

I had to work mine for a while to find the right balance, but in the end it just feels better as a single strap bag.

I use the Jones original and often carry all 14 clubs with medium sized grips. No complaints from me regarding difficulty of getting clubs in and out.

I have the slate grey utility stand bag and love it. It’s a little snug with mid size grips but does not bother me. I agree with the double straps. Took me a while to figure out how to carry and be comfortable, but figured it out and all is good. On my second season with it and I walk 90% of the time. Still in great shape. I really want to get an original or stripe shoe bag next. Love the simplicity, nastalgic look without the branding.

Also using a backpack and duffle of theirs for work travel. They make some great products.

I just picked up a Linksouldier bag from Linksoul. It’s relatively light at around 4 lbs if you like to walk every once in awhile. And the dual strap system is very comfortable. The opening is a little smaller than the Vessel, but I’ve had no issues with 14 clubs in there. And it just looks cool....

I am glad to know I’m not the only one who’s clubs keep falling out of the utility trouper.

I have had Ping Hoofers for 20 years.... was woo’d by the limited blue color way and lack of logos... however bag just doesn’t work

From following their social media during the PGA Show, it sounds like there may be a new version of the Utility Trouper coming. I have no idea what updates they made, though.

Same here. I have standard size grips but love the original Jones bags. Used them back in the 80’s and the newer ones are better quality than they once were. Nicely balanced bags

I am going to disagree with this. I have had numerous Jones bags... Original, 3 or 4 Jones Utilities, and now a Jones players. The players has 2 dividers and the others have 3. I have found the Players to have FAR LESS club tangle than the others with a 3 way. I typically carry 13, but have put 14 in the Players just fine. I have carried it multiple rounds and also put it on a riding cart. It's a little goofy on a riding cart but will still function just fine. It only has 3 pockets so if you like to carry a lot of stuff, it may not be for you. The Utility has way more and has a great layout. It's a little heavy when carrying but I think works well and looks better than the Trouper. If you can find one, it is a really nice bag. The other one that may be an option is the Linksoul Linksoldier... It has a 4 way top, 5 pockets, easy to carry, and stands up well all while having a bit of a vintage look. Good bag overall.
