Is there a way to post a score for handicap purposes when playing a mixed or "combo" set of tees that don't have their own specific rating? Say a senior who normally plays from the whites, to add to his enjoyment, moves up to the senior tees on a couple of holes where he had no chance of getting home in regulation from the whites. Is there a way to post that score?

Maybe. If the nearest rated tees are less than 300 yards different in length then there is a procedure for adjusting the rating/slope and posting manually. If the difference is less than 100 yards then no adjustment is necessary (or allowed). If the difference is between 100 and 300 yards then the USGA has a lookup table with the appropriate adjustments vs. yardage difference. Look in the USGA Handicapping Manual online under score posting for unrated tees.

Is this information widely known? I ask because I've been playing 35 years and never knew this. This is fascinating. I always assumed if I moved up or back a tee box I was no longer playing by the rules of golf and the score could not be posted.

The USGA had a similar table before 2019, but I cannot find it now. I believe that the previous table included adjustments for yardage differences of greater than 300 yards, they scaled it back in the 2020 WHS set of rules.

I have been posting scores using these tables for years since most courses don't rate the longer tees for women. My inability to do it now as extensively is very aggravating. For example I cannot post if I play blue tees at my home course now because the difference relative to the next closest rated tees is greater than 300 yards.

Thanks for that, I knew it was out there. Have you asked the management at your club to try to get women's Ratings for those longer tees? I believe that the measurements made during the rating process are retained, I wonder if its possible to get those tees rated for you without an actual on-site evaluation.

We are under temp ratings right now while our bunkers are being removed/renovated. Once that work is complete (not sure when that will really be...), I am going to ask them to rate the blues for women when they re-rate the course. I don't play blues very often, but like to have that option. They stretch out to 6464 at sea level which is pretty challenging for me. Still haven't gotten the nerve up to attempt the tips (6821 ouch). Unless I happen to join up with folks playing the longer tees, I just play whites or the forward tees with ladies group. Even when I play with the kids in the state tournaments, we won't play much beyond 6200 so there isn't much need to push out to the longer tees except for fun.

Makes sense to me, if you can wait until the next regular re-rating. If there's a rating team on the course, it shouldn't be any extra effort (or cost) to get ratings for both men and women from every tee available, as well as for hybrid combinations of tees.
