100-105 Swing Speed Distance

Recommended Posts
I used to register 105 on all the monitors. My carry was always 235-240 and a total distance on 260-270. This was somewhat proven when I would play my local course with really soft, slow fairways and I NEVER got it past 240. Then I would go to a more normal course and average 260.

I saw a chart once that said the average 105 swinger was carrying it 240.
I'm almost identical ... 100-102 swing speed, max carry with both cheeks into it is 235-240.

I don't care what your smash factor and spin rate is, a ss of 100-105 is not going to give you a 280-290 carry. All things being perfect, it would still be impossible.
that's correct. I'm at 113-116 ss and carry the ball in low to mid 270s.

I'd have to agree with this. My swingspeed is in the 102-105 range and my total distance (carry +roll) tops out at 275 and is more commonly right around 260-265 and I have a good consistent repeatable swing.

That is about what my SS is and I can typically drive the ball 290 - 300+ depending on the conditions. At the beginning of the year I was fighting a slice which cost me a lot of distance but lately working on a much more relaxed swing and out to in swing I have been able to play a high draw pretty consistently.

Really? I need to get a new shaft then... I get to about 257 and I have a SS of 100.1mph.

Me too - I'm 250 (about 230 carry with 100mph speed). I'll take one of those shafts when you find them.

I hope I have something constructive to add. I have been clocked at 105 on a LM, but that was with way too much side spin. A controlled swing gets me to about 95 at best. I know my carry is around 210 based on distance on wet courses where the ball plugs where it lands. I achieve this with a 12.5 loft and a regular flex Aldila NVS shaft.

On a dry course the same swing gets me out to about 230 -240 on average, with roll. If I switch to a 10.5 degree head with a UST proforce shaft. I can get out to 270 (again, with roll) from an elevated tee and dry course (I know, I'm comparing apples to pineapples, but I am a driver ho and am always changing heads and shafts).

My friends hit past me all the time, but not usually straight. I usually turn in the low score of the round. Distance alone is nothing. Choose a driver/shaft combo that puts you in the fairway.

Here is a screen shot from a trackman fitting I had done a couple of years ago.

Ping Rapture with Blueboard is the top number (104ss, 14.5la, 2900rpm, 255 carry)
Ping Rapture with Altus is the middle number (103ss, 13.7la, 2500rpm, 253 carry)
TM R7 with Altus is the bottom number (100ss, 11.1la, 2000rpm, 229 carry)

The Ping BB combo was in my bag for a good 5 years. Finally swapped it out for a Cobra ZL with Matrix HD-6 shaft. Both carry pretty much the same, but there is a little more forgiveness in the ZL.

Old stuff:

1984 Ben Hogan Apex PC 2-E   1968 Wilson Dual Wedge
1964 Acushnet O-SET M6S Bullseye Putter

The key to any discussion on distance is "CARRY" not total because of all the variables. My SS is 105-107 and most of the time my carry is 250-260 MAX! Now I have it the magic # of 300 but it is because I knew where the hard part of the fairway was and if you land in it you get the roll of the PGA. Not at all saying those guys can't bust the ball but when you see one run 50+ yards.

My rule of thumb has always been that driver carry equals twice 9-iron carry.

My swing speed is 105 with the driver.

My 9-iron carry is 120 yards, and my driver carry is 240 yards.

Of course, I am still using a 43", steel-shafted driver!?
That's actually very close to accurate. I wonder if I am hitting the 9 iron exceptionally well, if my driver will fly an extra 10 yards!

In all honesty, I generally get about 240 - 250 carry at roughly 100 mph. Obviously, I get some good roll, and even better roll since I play a slight draw, but my carry isn't spectacular.

What it boils down to is accuracy. If someone could hit it 280 carry, but hit the fairway 3 out of 14, then they are just in trouble. If i can hit it 240 carry with roll, but i'm in the middle, i leave myself with the best shot possible. Accuracy is far more important than carry&distance.

Did anyone happen to see Bubba Watson on Thursday? Swing speed of 123 and a carry of 329 off the tee. I honestly don't know what I would do with myself if I could hit a golf ball that far. My swing speed hovers between 104-108 and my carry is generally somewhere in the 235-255 range just depending on the variables.

If I could improve my Attack Angle by about 8 degrees I could carry the ball around 270 with a 107 mph swing which is about the best you'll get with that SS. Reading this worries me somewhat. My average SS is at 104, max 110 and on a good strike, out the middle, I carry the ball 230 max. Granted I'm using a 9 degree G10 with a proLaunch red stiff. Makes me think I made need to go get fitted for a driver, the club is obviously costing me distance.

Driver swing speed around 100-105, and estimate carry around 240, with about 20-35 yds roll depending on contact (gps'd many drives from 260-280 total). This is with current driver (909 D2 Motore F1 65S 44.5") which was fitted last year.

My old off the rack Cobra F speed 10.5 NV-F 55R used to be about 240 carry but only 5-10yds roll.

Longest drive that had gps'd and verified (won a driver in a long drive comp) was 320 yards total, hot summer day, hard fairways with a Taylormade 2009 Burner 10.5 with Reg shaft (played about 46.5"), have no idea of carry, but must have pured it, and quite possibly hit the hardest part of the fairway on a downhill lie. Great one for the memory bank, but have played that same hole many times since have not even been close to getting there again. A pure fluke on that one and goes to show how much conditions (and luck) play a part.

My swing speed is 125-130 ( isn't it childish to claim our speed by our fastest club, wouldn't finding your speed of a mid iron be more represenative of someones true golf speed since it would be more averaged) but my carry is usually 280-290 ( started using google earth to find true distances at ranges) and my 9 iron is definitely more than 50% of carry, so is PW to be honest. Is that due to some of us delofting our irons, which I'm sure I do, or people who don't put a full swing into their driver and that's where the 50% ratio between 9i and Driver comes form?

The quick rule of thumb is 2.5 x swing speed = distance...... 100-105 swing speed should equate to about 250-260 yards.
That's easier math but "2.3 x" is more correct/accurate for carry distance.

I agree. I swing at that speed and my carry is around 240-250 with no wind. If I really go after it I can maybe get 260 carry but that is a stretch.

Hope I'm in the correct form. Buddy of mine last time he checked swing speed around 100-105 if you read everything your distance is max say 260-270 carry.

My SS is between 98-106 depending on my back at the time and I hit 280+ regularly.

I'm sorry but unless you are 200 feet above sea level or have a 40mph tailwind thats not happening.
