Knowing the hole is a Driver and mid iron for even shorter pros....changes things.

I think it plays a bit longer than that because of the wind - and the the thing I don't remember in the movie is a huge tree about 100 yards out on the right side of the fairway that comes into play with a long drive. Basically, the longer your drive, the more important it is to be left center of the fairway, otherwise you're hitting a pretty big cut depending on the pin location.

Found this on the PGA site and it has some great back story in terms of what really happened during the filming of Tin Cup.

Costner has worked hard on his golf swing since Tin Cup...I saw him on tv recently and it was much improved from the McAvoy move.

Plus, he's kinda enjoying a career resurgence right now.

Always happy to see success for a fellow golfer.

I was there at first stage of Q School two years ago... it isn't an easy hole and if I remember correctly, it played as the most difficult hole on the entire course.

Back in 2004 I was playing with my dad and a family friend at a course with a BRUTAL long Par 5 18th. I had 245yd donwhill to clear water to the green. Our friend gives me the "you don't have the balls" comment so I take my 16* hybrid and I FLUSH it. Lands 1yd too short and SPLASH. I didn't even flinch "Romeo give me another ball, we're playing from here!". Well the 2 of them were ROFL. I dropped 5 more in the drink before I quit trying! LOL

Very cool read.

The only thing that bothers me about that scene in the movie is how the 3 wood Roy hits rolls up to about a foot from the pin and then rolls back in the water. Would obviously never happen, but hey, it's a movie. Still, the golfer in me scratches my head a little bit every time I watch that scene. If that was the case, every putt and iron shot that wasn't holed would end up in the drink. Should have had it hit the pin and then roll back in the water ala Tiger at the Masters last year. Or just had him come up short in the first place.

I would have made it that he hits the pin and then it rolls back in the water....Obviously the guy who wrote that scene wasnt a golfer :)

The funny thing is that I think I remember hearing that Gary McCord and Peter Kostis were brought on to the movie as "golf consultants" to assure that the golf related stuff was realistic. I guess nobody had a better idea for that shot on 18.
