My 6 iron SS is 83 i was fit for the 5.0 in PX. The PX runs stiff to flex it plays more like 5.5

a couple of years ago i was 89mph 6 iron and was fitted for 5.5 px, but I actually ended up going with, and hitting better the 6.0. probably a weight thing as they get lighter as they loose stiffness

For you id recomend 5.5, should be plenty with 83mph

Which flex in the project x should I choose? I have very late release and looking for tight dispersion for blade irons. Have yet to try them out but I've been playing golf for a year.

I have a very similar swing speed and a late sometimes none existing release lol, I don't play blades, I play cavity backs but my 6 last summer was averaging 84-88mph with spikes up to 95mph sometimes. Irons I'm currently playing ended up being Precision Rifle S90's and they feel great so far. Wedges are DG S300's which is what the PX website suggested I should be playing in my irons from the fitting guide. hope this helps :)

My 6i SS is around 88mph and the 5.5 gave me the best numbers. However, they were crazy stiff and I really did not care for the feel at all.

I would suggest starting at 5.0 and only moving up if you are really overspinning them. I always recommend s300 players to start at 5.0 in the PX and then move up.

At 84mph, you'd be absolutely crazy to even try a 6.0, as you would almost certainly lose one or maybe 2 full clubs in distance.

I'm 86 mph. And I fit into PX 5.5. PX flighted 6.0 and pxi 6.0. The regular PX shafts cpm higher. Info came from a PX rep and good shaft fitter. I have smooth transition.

rubbish

you dont loose 2 clubs distance because a shaft is too stiff

I think a renowned clubfitter on here said that the difference between a shaft that was way too soft and a shaft that was way too stiff was something like 1mph in clubhead speed

It will slightly alter launch angle but not by much

more of a feel thing, if you can load it, it will feel better than something too stiff

For example I have a 6 iron with a x100 8 iron shaft in it(hardstepped twice) and I get a slightly lower ballflight but almost identical distance to s300s, which I use and feel best to me. That would be an example of something far too stiff for me

5.0's hard stepped 1x.

Do NOT listen to the 6.0 talk, you'll be struggling.

Couldn't agree more, I played px 5.0 all last season and my swing speed is 82 and they worked perfect.

I am also in agreement that the 6.0 std PX shaft is way too much. I am exactly where you are in speed, mid tansition, and a 6.0 is harsh and feels like rebar. I tried on out once just because there was a club head that I wanted to try. PX shafts, because of their profile, are pretty stout in design. If anything, I would error on being a hair soft than a hair firm.

I'll chime in at around 82mph with 6I.
I had 5.0 PX flighted and didn't particularly like them. I've now got 5.5 PX95 in some XHPs and X-Forged and think they are great.
I bought an extra set of shafts in case something comes up on eBay.

I was looking to try new irons but get away from the S300's I has played for years and get into Project X. Picked up a demo 6 iron with a 6.0 flighted in it which IMO plays much stiffer than S300. Feel and flight were OK but felt a bit harsh if I didn't pure the strike. Demo'd some Cally 2013 X forged with PXI 6.0 and these were money. Felt stiffer than S300 but a hair softer than PX 6.0. This might be a good option but please, go out and HIT BALLS with the shafts to get a feel. Even if not in same club head. Fit yourself by feel and flight rather than by SS numbers.

There is more to fitting a person to a given shaft than swing speed, let alone which flex of that shaft they should be playing.

I would try to look into figuring out the other characteristics in your swing that would determine that before just going with a blanket "my swing speed is 'x' so I should play 'y'" especially since you said you've only been playing for 1 year and it sounds like you've never hit a PX before either.

The reason I point this out is because I see on this thread alone, there are two ppl with the same SS number and both have different flexes they were fit into, and if I threw myself in there I would be in the 88-89 swing speed category and I was fit into a 6.0 straight in with PX. It depends a lot on tempo, speed, timing, how/at what point/how much you load the shaft, high spin player, low spin player, high ball hitter, low ball hitter. And all of that aside, you may actually hit a PX and loath how it feels. Then again, you may love.

If you're going to experiment and try it I would maybe order just one shaft and throw it into one club, should you choose to go the informal route, and see if you even like it before you invest in a full set. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth. I happen to think they are great shafts, but I have found a few others that I would put above them. If you are dealing with a shaft that is suited to your game, most of what any of us would tell you about why or why not to go with it, other than some of the core principals of fitting, is all totally subjective.

All I know is I hit it pure and the stiffer the better because that gives tighter disperion. I have very good technique and I always hear compliments on my swing while at the driving range.

what is your transition? the will tell people a lot about what would like based off what you are giving us.

I am an 87-89mph 6 iron and hated the project x 5.5's. They felt boardy and stout to me. But I am a smooth swinger non aggressive. I tend to like lighter shafts. You are not really giving us much.

Depends on what you like. I play a shaft on the stiff side cause i prefer the "boardy" feel. I do loose a little distance. However, sub consciously it keeps me patient and behind the ball (i get too much forward). I'm a hitter and also have a late release and my poison is getting quick. The stiffer shaft will help with dispersion as well but may lower your ball flight at bit. its all preference on what you FEEL is right.

Can 84 mph 6 iron justify 175 yd carry?
