Here's the problem I have, how do you really determine whether a company is underrated or overrated?

If you know golf you know the companies that are quality, even the lesser known ones.

I guess if you use my example of Nike as being underrated. I say that because after working in golf retail most people wouldn't touch Nike. This was simply because it wasn't Titleist or Taylormade. The problem, IMHO, with the initial nike products was the cheap shafts they were marrying to their club heads.

It wasn't until after a reshaft that people were like, "Wow!" Truth be told, the Nike T60 is probably one of the best fairway woods ever and Tiger playing it after coming out of his 970 didn't hurt. That's why golf retailers haven't still fully discounted this 2 generations removed clubhead too much because people initially underestimated it.

Overrated - Taylormade or Callaway (I must admit that I do not like Callaway at all). Taylormade just seems to re-invent the wheel a little too often.

Underrated - Wilson Staff or Adams. My appreciation and perspective on Adams products has really changed in the last 2 to 3 years. I no longer view them strictly as an "old man's club".

Overrated - I'm not a flamethrower. Nothing is overrated if you're fitted for it & you like it. Who cares what some stranger on the internet thinks.

Underrated - Heavy Putter - Everyone of you reading this is a club whore, you wouldn't be in this forum if you weren't. This is the best club you've never tried.

Underrated #2 - Bobby Jones FW woods - Our mothers could hit these straight.

If another person says titleist are over rated then i think i'll throw my PC out of the window. I peronally play callaway equipment at the moment, but have always respected and understood the FACT that Titleist are the OVERALL number one brand i.e product info, customer service, custom fitting, new products.

When buying the 905R for example, you can choose from 48 SHAFTS on a custom option!!, most of which carry no upcharge. Nike, cally, taylormade and PING are a million miles away from this kind of service.

OVERRATED

Adams -- will never ditch its "old man" stigma no matter what it introduces

Tour Edge -- the Exotics line is good, but way overpriced and the regular line screams "Wal Mart"

UNDERRATED

Srixon -- best ball selection, top to bottom, on the market and both hybrids and irons are pretty good.

Titleist -- high handicappers need not apply. Otherwise, no one else touches the classic looks and solid performers across all categories

;)

Are you sure you didn't mix these up? Adams is only the #1 hybrid on ALL TOURS. Is there a better hybrid on the market for good players? Their new forged irons with the Black Golds, standard...I'd put them up against Titleist most days.

That's exactly WHY they are overrated. They did a good job with the Idea Pro forged irons and hybrids, which leads people to think they've actually turned the corner but in fact that's not ALL of their lines. The rest of their lines scream OLD MAN and HACKER'S DELIGHT. The new driver and fairways? Back to the OLD MAN/HACKER stigma again!!!!! If they follow up the Idea Pro forged with a good design, I might change my mind. Until then? OVERRATED.

:) Adams is the #1 hybrid on all tours, and THAT'S WHY THEY ARE OVERRATED????? Uhh....what? Their new set with the forged irons and arguably best hybrid ever (other than tour only versions) get no press and no love, so I'm not sure how that leads people to think anything. How about the fact that they were the first to introducte standard aftermarket shafts in their products geared toward better players like the BiMatrix, NV and Black Gold?

It is true that some of their clubs are geared toward higher handicappers. This is called marketing to the masses (most players shoot 100+) and is a sound strategy, as they have off-the-rack sets to fit most profiles. Titleist would do well to implement some of this strategy. Adams' Tour products are SECOND-TO-NONE, and I don't see any hype on other sites about much that Titleist is doing on tour.

I'm not sure why they would need another design to impress you after the Idea Pro Forged, but ok. Maybe you aren't sure what the term "overrated" means, but I think if you look at the rest of responses on this post, you will find that you are missing the mark. The stigma that you subscribe to is not uncommon, and most people "in the know" recognize that it is not the case, and I think that is what this post is about.

I'm not sure how this helps a huge market segment. Most people don't take time to get fitted correctly in the first place, and many players like those who look at sites like this one buy used equipment and then get whatever aftermarket shaft they want. Unless custom options include high-end $200+ shafts, there is not much incentive for me to spend extra money on a "new" driver when I can get the same "new" driver for half-price from an online retailer and then change shafts afterward, choosing from 500, not 48. I just don't think that Titleist sets the same standard they did 20, 10 or even 5 years ago.

Overated:

- In general and in no particular order: TaylorMade drivers, ANY golf shaft over $250 ( or thereabouts), Vokey spin milled, the Ryder Cup, any thing or event or person with the word "Super" in it (including the derivative, super-duper), Faldo on the Golf Channel, Callaway FTi driver, Myrtle Beach (but only whenever I go because it usually never gets above 40*), light beer, my wife's friends' husbands, hitting into a net, a Caddy (except for jokes), Scotty Cameron, the Doral, Masters of the Universe (you know who you are), half time and brush tees.

Underated:

- In general and in no particular order: Srixon, Bridgestone equipment in USA, Adams hybrids, The British Open, Ciroc vodka, Wilson Di7 irons, Lessons, swedish fish, Ping putters (see Cameron above), Black Labs, Amateur tours, walking instead of riding, Medicus, skis and lucky socks.

Overrated: To me Titleist. Don't get me wrong they make great stuff I have more of their stuff in my bag then any other brand. But to me their balls are overrated. I think other balls have caught up if not passed it by in performance, thought I cannot speak of their new balls yet. Plus if you read these forums they are the most praised brand.

Underrated: IMO Bridgestone/Srixon. To me both of these companies are pretty similiar. They both make very high quality and playable products. They are price very reasonably and perform very well. But neither get very much attention. I play once a week for 3 years and mostly walk on by myself so I play with different people all the time. And to this day I have never seen a person play a product by either of these companies. I am not kidding.
