Tournament season is pretty much over here. Covid wrecked my plans for that. Had 13 tournaments scheduled. All of them cancelled. Next year I’ll be jumping head first into tournament golf.

My course closed for the season last Sunday, and I can say, I got it done. My handicap dropped to +1.4 with some solid rounds, by far the lowest my handicap has ever been. There’s still some golf left to be played around here away from my club and I’ll be traveling to play some. I’ve got a trip to work with Chase scheduled for next month, really looking forward to that.

I’m working hard on keeping my left shoulder down longer in transition. I’m mostly drawing my irons and playing a cut with driver.

 

The biggest change to my game has been ballstriking, by far. Hitting better iron shots has given me way more birdie opportunities than I used to be capable of. I got an Arccos system and have used it for about 6 weeks, which has helped me tailor my practice time. 

 

Thanks again to everyone for following along. Who knows, maybe I can shave another half stroke or more. +2 would be pretty sweet.

I have been physically unable to swing a club this year due to bilateral frozen shoulder followed by a sprained kneck.  I really missed Monte and you in NJ in this summer.

Tungsten weighting. I havent been using my LAB as much. I find it excels on fast greens, and I putt well with it on all greens. However, there’s something about a spider that just clicks for me. I’ve had my best rounds putting with one. The spider x chalk sets up nicely on the greens, is appealing to my eye, and I’m comfortable with it. 
 

The tech is great in the LAB, and when I struggle putting I go back to it. That said, I dont feel that I ‘need’ the LAB to putt well on a regular basis.

I plan to make another trip back down next spring or early summer and take my son.  I think Chase can help him a bunch.  He made huge progress after Monte's clinic and I think Chase can polish it up.

What was your athletic background before that? did you play baseball? Hockey? Other sport? If so, at what level as a young person/teen/college?

Played baseball until high school. Picked up golf freshman year of college. Been playing about 9 years now.

Was a pretty good baseball player, but put most of my efforts into music in high school. I was a very good hitter.

Anyone have any good recommendations for good restaurants and golf courses in Houston? I’ll be staying in North Houston area.

This past week, I spent 4 days at the Hal Sutton Golf Academy in Houston Texas working with Chase Cooper and Hal Sutton. I had a really good season, finishing off at a +1.5 handicap and posting a number of low rounds including a new personal best. However, this trip left me with the greatest, most complete blueprint of my personal golf swing that I’ve ever had. With some hard work, I have no doubt that my golf game is going to improve by leaps and bounds. 

Day 1

 

On Monday, I had a 2 hour lesson with Chase and we dove head first into my swing. Chase asked me a question point blank to start the lesson: what were my goals for this trip, and what did I hope to get out of coming down to Texas. 

 

I laid out 3 goals: 

 

1. Eliminate back pain caused by my golf swing. (This is a new problem this year)
2. Improve my iron play. Arccos tells me it’s my most glaring weakness and is usually the determinant of my score on a given day
3. Eliminate the large block slice miss I’ve developed with driver. 

 

My miss tends to be either a pull draw or a weak flare right. It’s not quite a two way miss as the pull draw is much more prevalent. After warming up, my biggest issue was pretty glaring: I’m far too in to out and way too shallow. I was only 1* down AoA with a wedge and 8* in to out. 20-30 yard hot hooks with a wedge are fairly common for me. 

 

Chase explained that my left shoulder does not work properly in my golf swing. I right tilt very early, then save it by dragging the handle through impact. I’ve been trying to keep my left shoulder down longer but it was hard to understand the move remotely. Once I felt the move in person, it was a lightbulb moment. It’s much more subtle than I realized and its also for a shorter duration than I previously thought. 

 

From there, we set about making some tweaks to my backswing to make the transition and downswing moves easier. I’ve got to get the backswing a bit more vertical with the shaft more vertical, the club face a touch more open, and less depth. I also need to shorten my shoulder turn a little and stay more centered from a face on view. 

 

I over rotate a bit and get too deep. The club gets behind and I have two choices, come over it or over right tilt. This was something that Dan Carraher pointed out as well. 

 

From the top, my left shoulder has to continue working down and around out of the way. The club will come down steeper and on a more neutral path. 

 

By the end of the first day we were able to get the path 0-2 left and AoA 3-4 down. 

 

I stayed to grind for a few hours after the lesson and start to make some progress. 

 

Day 2

 

I had planned on playing a round of golf somewhere on Tuesday, but circumstances allowed me a pretty awesome opportunity. David Edel came to the Academy to demonstrate his putter fitting system to the guys. I got to be the guinea pig and get a putter fitting from the man himself. It started off with David putting a mirror on the face of my Spider X putter. Using a laser line, he was able to show me that I was aimed roughly 18 inches left of the hole on a straight 20 foot putt. We then went through different putter configurations, lines, offsets, neck types, putter shapes to bring my aim bias further right. We ended up in a round type mallet with two small lines on the top line. 

 

Next, he dialed in the weighting of the putter by having me putt to a string line. After a few adjustments, I was rolling them and stopping them on the string line time after time. 

 

In the end, I was left with an understanding of what characteristics I need in a putter:

 

More round shape, minimal or no lines on the putter (must be on top line if there are any) and less offset. A bit more upright was a recommendation too. As far as weighting, I do better with a lighter club head and more weight under my hands as a counterbalance. My stroke tends to get robotic and deliberate. It’s too long and too steer-y.  That’s something that’s been pointed out to me in the past, including the day before by Chase. The lighter swingweight allowed me to hit the putts with some authority and no fear of blowing them by the hole. The static weight of the putter was still nice and solid, but it swung much easier. 

 

 I’m not sure if I’ll order a putter, but it’s good to know my tendencies aim wise. It’s funny, when I line up the line on the ball with the hole then set up to it, I aim perfectly. It’s something I’ll need to monitor. I’ll also know what to look for when buying putters in the future. I took the information on weighting and recreated a similar setup with my putters at home using Superstroke counter core grips and some lead tape under the grip. The results are promising.
