Nice pics and write up Chris - your trip reminded me of an overnighter 4 of us took from Boston to play Oakmont many moons ago. Drove all night in a driving rainstorm, showered in the sinks at Bob Evans near Oakmont and right to the first tee with no sleep.

  • 1 month later...

Time for a little update on my game. A few people have PM'ed me asking how I'm hitting it and for a while there wasn't much to update on!

Went through a pretty tough bout of the shanks for about a week and a half or two weeks. Was working on left shoulder down in transition and didn't have the parts to match it, so I'd kick the shaft out and WHAM! Weather was cold and rainy like much of the country until the end of May here, so our season started very late. After a warm week temperatures dipped back down, so the past two weeks have been the real kickoff.

Stuck out the El Hosels, and let my body adjust to the new pattern on lots and lots of short shots into the net at my house and eventually at the range. I can now say I'm hitting it the best I have in a very long time, if not ever. Some long-term issues I've been addressing are my backswing sequence (hips turn too much too soon, and then I drag the clubhead outside the ball immediately. I reach max ROM with my hips and then have to lift and loop my arms) and my transition. I'm trying to feel like my arms start my backswing, which is getting the club on plane nicely. From there, I'm trying to increase right wrist bend/flex left wrist and get my arms as narrow and far forward as I can. I have a tendency to chuck it away from the top (developed in the last few years) and it forces me to either right tilt too much and flip at it (high pulls or snap hooks) or I get my left shoulder down and kick the clubhead out too early (shank).

When I get more narrow in the downswing, I lean the shaft more, take a nice divot, and hit it on a much flatter trajectory.

I'm hitting the ball with a lot less effort, and the increased efficiency has me hitting it a good bit further than I was earlier in the season. The shaft lean is helping as well. I have to learn to trust it now and begin playing golf again. My ability to score is improving and I'm finding myself playing golf swing less and less. I have to resist the urge to yank on the club in transition, and I have to be very patient in order to do that. It feels like my transition takes an eternity.

Next step is to get some more flexion in my left wrist/right wrist bend in transition and get the left shoulder a bit more down. I can do it well on wedges and short irons but as the club gets longer its tougher. Driving it well though all things considered and just have to be patient and "trust the process" so to speak. There's been a number of times this season where my swing has frustrated me to no end, but I've had faith in the things I've been taught and have allowed myself to have bad days.

A good friend of mine put it to me this way. He said : Do everything you can to hit the ball low, and let the equipment elevate it for you. That's been a gold mine for me. I try to do everything with my swing to hit it low, and my body and the club react to hit it plenty high. I'm using the ground better, and once I learn how to make this release more natural, I think I'm going to hit it further than I ever have. Things are so much more efficient now that it feels counter intuitive. I'm not "swinging easy" per se, but eliminating excess motion. When I feel like I've hit it hard, I generally haven't. When I've felt loose, tension free, and efficient, it goes further and further. Will update more as we get further into the season.

Here's a few videos from this week.

I feel ya there, Chris. I'm hitting the shorter clubs better than ever thanks to the Efficient Swing videos, but the top of the bag is still a work in progress. And I struggle with that right wrist extension drill like you for the same reason (you may recall that we compared surgical scars at the Seattle clinic a few years ago).

Absolutely I remember.

For me, I find I really have to keep the tension out of my right wrist, which can be difficult on cold or humid days. If I keep it relatively tension free, it's easier reach full ROM and transition better.

Okay so I’ll stop with being a sarcastic meanie.

Chris, what I like about the new move most of all is it looks buttery. Loose and free, lacking tension. The videos make it appear like you’re hardly forcing the swing at all. Looks easy and smooth. Effortless swings are always something to admire.

@Schnee swing is definitely looking smooth and effortless. What feels or drills are you using to work on the wrist angle changes for more lead flexion/ trail extension?

When I first picked up the game I had a pretty big lateral move off the ball in the backswing. Have worked to keep it in check. Now it's natural and I don't think about it. I'd probably identify as a center anchor or center post golfer (EA Tischler, Mike Adams, etc). If I move too much laterally in the backswing, I move too laterally trying to get back in the downswing.

Haha, never change man. I appreciate the sarcasm.

I need to feel like my swing is more effortless. When I'm putting more effort into it, it's slower and less efficient. When I was putting up my highest swing speed numbers, it didn't really feel like I was going after it all that hard. I'm not one of those people whose swing is violent fast. It just doesn't match up for me.
