EPONS arrived- Initial impressions added

Well this is a bit new for me posting up about new irons. I've been hitting Scratch DW blades forever now and never really considered changing. After some research and a struggling game, these EPON SUS316's really peaked my interest. Endo forged, limited, and supposedly softer than the s20c material from existing models. Add in the fact that these have less offset and a thinner topline and - instant winner. I literally tore open the box and snapped some pics. About halfway through I realized the plastic was on the heads. Oh well, they are back from being shafted and I hope to give them a full workout this weekend with review to follow.

Here are some profile shots for those interested. I'm really not a fan of offset, but for some strange reason, the tad offered in the SUS don't really bother me. You will also notice the ultra thin top-line and head being quite long from hosel to toe. Stay tuned for some comparo pics against my DW flatbacks.

Awesome looking. After getting the shafts in my 302's right they are awesome for me, more forgiveness, height, and distance. Can't imagine if these are actually softer, a perfect mid iron already feels like hitting a marshmellow lol.

What are you shafting them with? I need to demo these soon. Congrats though, they look great and are confidence inspiring, probably why you looked right past the small offset. You will love them.

^^^^ Wow! That is really odd for JDM. That is the reason why people purchase JDM. Higher tolerances! I assume that head weights were spot on though?

They look gorgeous. I can't wait to get the review!

Remind me of the ZB Forged. Nice looking irons, I hope that they work.

Epon are usually dead on loft, lie and SW. Very surprised.

A fitter you trust I'd have to believe, someone trying to up the price of the build for adjustments needed almost sounds
more believable.

This is the first set of Epon heads I've ever heard of that were off stated specs..... Disappointing.

Very interested in what you think about these and how they compare to you DW's

Congrats on a sweet set of irons.

Hey guys. First off, the benz isn't mine. A friend just bought it. I wish it was mine, but I decided to have 3 kids instead. :swoon:

Well, I just got back from the range and I cannot say how impressed I am with these irons. Met up with a fellow WRX'er Mikeytown and he can attest to everything. It was really a shot in the dark for me not having held the heads or tried the shafts before buying. I only brought out the 7 iron to test and I will say a few things with certainty. First off, they are at least half a club longer than my playing set (Scratch flatbacks). Second, they also fly a club higher ie. the 7 iron was flying the same height as my Scratch 8 iron. Win Win!!! Thirdly, these irons are soft soft soft even with range balls. I'm also very happy with the SPB shafts. Again, I had no idea what to expect but read nothing but great things on wrx and they live up to all of it. Super smooth. I initially thought the SPB were low to mid launch shafts, but maybe its the head that is giving me the added height?

I snapped a quick pic of my 3 7 irons below. From left to right- EPON SUS316 - Scratch Flatback - Scratch TD SB-1. At address, the offset on the SUS really stick out, but that's compared to 0 offset irons. I had no problem adjusting and feel a lot more confident over the ball now.

As far as specs being off, I'm going to speak to my builder a bit more about this. All the said is that they were way off, but not sure if this meant a degree or two or more.

how much were those heads..epon is very very nice but over priced in my view. If they were all over the place loft/lie id return them to the person you purchased them from..quite disappointing for the massive coin you spent sir.

This would be word for word how I would describe my 302/super peening orange combo. Not that it matters with irons but the epon sets I've tried have always had higher ball speeds on trackman for me. Regarding softness just wait until you nut a 7 iron on the course with a pro V, it will feel like you hit a marshmellow.

The comment about the SPB launch is interesting. I've read so many posts on here about SPB being a low to mid. I asked fitter about them (because I hit a very high ball) and he told me they're definitely a high launch shaft and would be awful for my game.

Gorgeous sticks. Welcome to the JDM club. Tell your wife and kids we're sorry....

I usually tell my wife that I'm dyslexic and I transposed the numbers on the clubs and the bank account. "Honey, I didn't get new clubs, they are the same old clubs, but I got the numbers confused." :) Works almost all the time.

Congrats, they look great. Look forward to a "long-term" review update.

Definitely not a high launch shaft. Are you sure he is not thinking of the Super Peening Orange? I guess every shaft could perform different for different swings but I know a few top level fitters in So Cal and I personally have hit the SPB next to other low/low shafts in the same exact heads and they are low/low in every aspect from what I have seen and experienced and from people that I know.

Set is built. A funny thing my builder noted was that loft/lie were a bit off. Not sure if thats common with head only builds.
