When Tiger Retires

I had a thought about Tiger after competition.

Would he ever step into the booth. Be a Nick Faldo or Johnny Miller?

It would be interesting to hear him doing analysis or color.

Or to see him do a swing vision breakdown of somebody's swing. He's been through enough different coaches and has enough study, I would think, to pick a few things apart.

BUT, I have to wonder, when he's been gone from the game for a while, say twenty years down. Would future Wrx'ers start threads about how FOX's Worlds Most Dangerous Golf Channel should fire him?

Would he wind up getting the disregard of a Johnny Miller?

Or, that may be extreme, but still I hear a lot about how Jack Nicklaus is old and needs to shut up about his thoughts on the direction of the game. Will we see those posts? Would he be maligned for only having 14 majors and not breaking Jack's record?

I guess, as some people diminish Jack's achievements would they do the same to Tiger if he were critique future major winner, Brick Steel?

Added Note:

It would be fun to hear Tiger's sign on phrase (a la Jim Nantz), "Hello, world..."

When Tiger retires, the PGA Tour is in trouble -- as good as some of the younger guys are, they are not going to put the casual sports fans' butts in the seats.
They will eventually. Tiger just spoiled everyone and no one can live up to his "mythical" standards. Look at Bubba's year. 2 wins including a major and 3 other top 3's. If that had been tiger he would look like the favorite to win the grand slam this year. Instead it is just Bubba having a good year. People just need to adjust their expectations a little. The talent is there but it gets ignored unless it's Tiger.

Disagree. Golf exploded in popularity when Tiger came out in 96 because he brought in the casual sports fan. Before that, the senior tour was regularly getting better TV ratings than the PGA Tour. Without Tiger, and Phil to a certain degree, the PGA does not have much drawing power for anybody but hardcore golf fans. The viewership this year at the Masters -- without tiger -- was terrible by modern standards and comparable to early 90s numbers. Guys like Dufner, and Speith while great players, do not have the charisma -- the "it" factor -- that Tiger has. There is no question that the Tour is headed for a dark period over the next decade.

Edit: btw, I don't know anyone who likes Bubba and most of the posts here about him are quite negative. The guy comes off as a completely unappreciative spoiled a******. To paraphrase Loyd Bentson, Bubba is no Tiger Woods :)

Unless Tiger's hitting a golf shot, I could care less if I ever hear him or hear of him.
Exactly. It's not as though everything out of his mouth is a gold bar. Not a real exciting guy in front of a mic. There's no way in the world he would ever consider doing color commentary...no way.

2 things:
1) the hardcore fan keeps the game going when the casual fan turns it's back. Don't ever forget that

2) Like it or not, Bubba is your POY frontrunner.

If Tiger disappears from the public eye he will be the first iconic golfer to do so. Hogan is the only comparison that's close and he still ran Ben Hogan Co.

Palmer and Nicklaus are somewhat forced to keep themselves in the public eye and relevant because of their business interests would suffer if they went recluse.

Tiger probably won't have the same need to attempt to stay relevant but if he continues to expand his golf course design business and transition into other golf related businesses then that could change.

He's said many time that his Foundation is important to him. That will keep him somewhat visible and engaged.

Its hard to predict who is going to be good on TV and who will come off as a blowhard/annoying/whatever....tiger would surely have credibility.

It'll never happen but wouldn't it be fascinating to have Tiger in the booth for one of the Majors while he's out recovering and get to hear his analysis of the guys he's competed against?

Man! Anything for a new Tiger thread, huh?

I can't see Tiger becoming a TV commentator. He doesn't work well with people. He's much too self absorbed.

Tiger is likely to disappear from public view after his playing days.

People said the same things about Faldo when he was the world's best player.

Yet---when he stepped away from the game---people were finally able to see a more relaxed and approachable side of his personality (which had always been there).

Tiger has a similar side to his personality that people seem to always manage to miss.

I see him more along the lines of Nicklaus, Palmer, or Norman..... working the business angles, designing courses, and having a tournament that he hosts each year. I wonder how long he'll keep playing in majors because I don't see him as the type to play for nostalgia, ie if he can't win I doubt he'll play for the cameras.

These days, the guys make so much money that there's not much incentive to want to go sit in a booth for 14 hours a day talking about other golfers unless they blow it all and need more.

Do not disparage Johnny Bench. We will not be friends any longer! ;)

I don't see Tiger going in the booth. But what the heck, what do I know? I'm just a golf fan.

Tiger in the booth? Not a chance, unless it's at his National tournament the way Jack appears at the Memorial.

If there's a market for it, he'll do course design. I can see him becoming more involved in charities to benefit troops and veterans, and giving more time to his own foundation.

But more than anything, expect to see him spending more time aboard his yacht and at home with his kids. Really think he'll disappear from the public eye as much as possible.

As much chance of this happening as Tiger playing the Champions Tour. Zero.
There is actually a pretty good chance that Tiger will join the Champions Tour when he gets old enough and can no longer be competitive in the regular tour. Pro golfers make much more money being walking billboards than winning prizes and Tiger is no different. Most of that income will disappear if he takes himself out of the limelight and, regardless of how much money he has already made, he is also spending a lot. Granted he can afford not to, I doubt that anybody with any sense will stop making good money if he has the opportunity to do so.

Yeah...except that's with his inner circle of friends, not with the general public, or media, or any other type of outlet where he puts himself "out there". To them he is aloof and noticeably and purposely guarded.

Just as his detractors and - I'm about to sink down to neanderthal levels here - "haters" tend to ignore the good things about him, his ardent fanatics tend to embellish or sometimes even fabricate what simply isn't there.....or certainly things not privy to anyone but an insider.

He will be the poster boy for his brand of PED's that would now be legal.

His slogan:

"Tiger-Clear. It worked for me from 1997-2008".

Kinda like Johnny Bench on the blue emu stuff.

Always wondered why he had such a cannon for an arm.

bench.jpg?w=230&h=300

That's a great pic of JB.

Let's go for the big threadjack here, at least temporarily:

I was a kid back in the late 60's/early 70's, and you couldn't find a bigger Dodger fan than yours truly. My brother was a Reds fan, and his favorite player was Johnny Bench.

Back in those days Johnny was considered by many as the greatest catcher in MLB history.

I stopped following MLB many years ago, but I have always wondered if JB is still largely considered the best ever, or did someone else take that honor.
