Ball markers.....does the size a fellow player uses bother you?

Ha. A thread so long on this topic. I am 53 years old and when I learned to play no one ever marked with anything bigger than a quarter. Don't think I have ever played with anyone who used a poker chip to mark. However, I would not care if anyone used one. I struggle when playing partners use dull pennies 'cause I can't see them.

I don't like when people use poker chips but that's mainly because they're large for the no reason other than being large. It doesn't so much bother me but I think it just looks ridiculous. A buddy of mine is a freelance filmmaker and travels all around the world and he had some Japanese Yen that I snagged from him. The 1 yen coin is perfect. It's slightly larger than a penny but silver so it's easier to see than the copper of a penny.

I normally don't let small things like this bother me but for some reason whenever I see someone using a Poker chip style marker it bugs me. With coins, flat marks, etc. the size doesn't bother me. But with Poker chips I don't even want them in my line of sight. They are just so darn big it distracts me lol.

kudos to the OP for a fun topic..a couple points that sprig to mind:

#1 -- Weiskopf was a major DB, he was in a rare category that considered himself even more important than his mom did; dressing down an AM for using a quarter as a marker is one of the all-time a-hole actions (ironically, a few in this thread who dislike poker chips liked using quarters); fwiw LOTS of pros use quarters (usually from the 1960s) for their ball markers, which tells you a little more about the aforementioned DB
#2 -- who cares what an opponent uses as a marker on the green? personally, I like big markers, they can be handy reference points for your line

Interesting discussion. I hadn't thought a lot about it, but I do find poker chips used as ball markers annoying. With that said, I have no rational reason for being annoyed, and I'd never dream of requesting that a player use something different if that's what they enjoyed using; I wouldn't feel I had a right to do so. Annoyed or not, I don't think my game is adversely affected by other players' ball markers.

On the other hand, if a player were annoyed for any reason with a marker I was using, I'd look into my bag for something different. So far in over 50 years of playing golf, I don't recall this happening.

I typically use a d cell battery, and no, I'm not moving it. Putt around it you pansy.

Will you at least remove it from your vibrator first? No one needs to see that on a golf course...

If somebody gets attitude over a quarter then it is a personal problem on their end. Nothing wrong with a quarter. Thats what I have used since 1997. Always a 1983 date.

Ive never actually been partnered with somebody who gave me attitude about anything I did so thats that.

Im not in the greatest mood today so this is the dead honest truth: I use my golfwrx tour issue poker chip and honestly I know it is rather large and I like when people in tournaments complain about it. It can easily be moved 2,3,4,5 putter heads if you think it is in your way. If you're complaining about the size of my mark then you're not thinking about your shot at hand. One less person with their mind on golf. If someone ever complains to me about it I will smile at them and say: "that really bothers you huh"? It usually gets them to realize that I now know that it is in their head and I know it. Once I know that they know that I know, it's a done deal. Thanks for coming out
I am with you buddy. I have had a guy mark his ball with a tin of Skoal. I thought it was hilarious. I don't get why some people would let something so silly take them out of the round. I collect and use the poker chips and have had people complain about them when I am no where near even there SIDE of the green.
Thats what I have done in scrambles before, putting down my chew can usually gets a good laugh!
I have never had a problem with what someone else uses either as long as they move it if they know to or are asked to.

I use one of the odyssey poker chips, helps me see where I've marked it if I am looking at at a 40 footer from the other side, low denomination coins just aren't big enough. Therefore I'm not bothered if others choose to do the same.

I've seen some comments on another thread about how Tom Weiskopf allegedly chewed out a amateur in a pro-am for using a quarter instead of apparently the more common penny.

I've played with guys that have used poker chips from Vegas, 50 cent size neon green plastic ones, and shiny dimes....none of them seem to bother me as I am more involved with trying to figure out the line and speed of my putt.

I can see some advantages from the bigger markers as I have had many fellow players step in my line about 1-2 feet from the hole simply because they either didn't know to not step in the line or did not see the marker. Most likely the latter. Lately I've kind of summed up the guys that I'm playing with that day as to how aware they are of other's putting lines on the green. If they seem to be knowledgeable about those courtesies I will use a dime....in not I will use a 50cent piece to help them see where I am at.

What size marker do you use? Does it bother you when someone in your group uses a large marker?
I use the poker chip for the same reason as you, so people won't step on my marker / line. Also so I don't lose track of where it is. When I'm closer to the hole I switch to a coin. I've never heard anyone say a quarter is too large.

I've been guilty of using a tee for short term marks, but that only when I'm not on anyone's line and I'm just picking up the ball to clean it.

Long putts out of anyone's line, I tend to use a poker chip, it's easy to find. Anything close or near someone's line, I just use the magnetic coin on my divot tool.

People have the same attitude towards our beloved game of golf as well. And we wonder why we are trending down on players...

Disc golf is one of the fastest growing games in the world, for what it's worth. Give it a try before you knock it. Check out PDGA.com and you can see all the Pro and Am events they hold. Pretty decent purses too for a "joke"

I played with a single who joined our group the other day and he was using a dime size DARK GREEN mark. On one hole he marked before I could really figure out where he was and got mad when I "walked in his line". I told him his marker isn't exactly visible and gave him a quarter... Of all colors, dark green? Silly
