How on earth do you guys even notice this kind of thing?
It doesn't happen often, but I have played with a couple of guys over the years that used preposterously large ball markers - things that were the size of saucers from a child's tea set. A coin or poker chip is pretty typical regardless of the size. But beyond this there exists is a special breed of guy who chooses to mark his ball with a commemorative plaque or something of that order.

Nobody uses the complimentary marker that comes with your glove? Lol
Actually, the best ball marker i have is a magnetic FJ one from a glove. It's the size of a quarter and razor thin.

I also have a sweet marker of similar shape that is a hot naked blonde...given to me by a buddy as MVP prize in scramble

I use several markers. It all depends on which one I can pull out of the bag that round. My favorite is the 2euro coin. Silver and gold, easy to see. I have a few PGA National wooden ones, but they are harder to find in the bag. I also use my Bethpage marker/divot fixer, magnetic coin.

People I play with use all sorts of stuff, from the tiny flouresent ones to poker chips. Doesn't bother me in the least.
Sometimes I pull out my $100 Luxor chip....that pisses 'em off!!

Im not in the greatest mood today so this is the dead honest truth: I use my golfwrx tour issue poker chip and honestly I know it is rather large and I like when people in tournaments complain about it. It can easily be moved 2,3,4,5 putter heads if you think it is in your way. If you're complaining about the size of my mark then you're not thinking about your shot at hand. One less person with their mind on golf. If someone ever complains to me about it I will smile at them and say: "that really bothers you huh"? It usually gets them to realize that I now know that it is in their head and I know it. Once I know that they know that I know, it's a done deal. Thanks for coming out

I am with you buddy. I have had a guy mark his ball with a tin of Skoal. I thought it was hilarious. I don't get why some people would let something so silly take them out of the round. I collect and use the poker chips and have had people complain about them when I am no where near even there SIDE of the green.

I could see how a large ball marker could be a distraction for some players. Not for me though. I have a pretty pronounced double line on my ball that I use to align with the sight line on my putter. Outside of that, I could care less what is around me. Just back and through and hope for the best.

Why would you mark a ball with a poker chip--leave the ball, the poker chip is in the way as much as a ball.

"Is that in your way?"

"Yes actually, could you move it to the left for me?"

"Absolutely my friend!"

I played against a guy in high school who used a hockey puck as a ball marker. That's the only one that's ever bothered me.
Where the hell did he carry it? Never mind, I don't want to know.

I have a garage full of pucks - maybe I'll use one when I play with my hockey buddy.

I used to use the little button markers on gloves, but then there was that one time I marked my ball, went to help a friend find their ball in some tall grass off the green, and then had a heck of a time finding my ball mark again. After that I moved onto using a range token. Always willing to move it and never have to search for it if I have to step away for one reason or another.

If someone is anywhere near my line with a poker chip or some commemorative metal coin/badge type thing, they should be prepared to move it at least two putter head lengths away from where it currently is. It's one thing to use a manhole cover when you're away/you're nowhere near anybody else's line. Quite another if that's the only mark you're using.

Leave no doubt and use something you figure WON'T bother anyone without having to ask.

Why is anything goes on the course these days so long as you asked first? That's not the point. Don't put people in the awkward position of having to be "that guy" that is annoyed by poker chips and having to tell you. As a general rule, anything you figure you'd have to ask people if it annoys them during their round: don't do it. Common courtesy.

To be fair about the original incident Weiskopf freely admits that for the great majority of his life he was a banal, joyless pr##...

To the subject I will use a dime or nickel. Largest I think I've used is a Sacagewa dollar. I dont like using those plastic ones with the spikes. Feel like I'm adding a spike mark for no reason.

I have two of the poker chip size metal markers. They have the smaller nickel sized marker that's held in by a magnet. I use the large one normally. If I know it will be close to someone's line I use the smaller one.

I've seen one stranger use his water bottle to mark his ball. I was paired with a threesome by the starter. We all know what kind of debate, that would be on WRX.

Too many will blame poor eyesight AFTER stepping on your line. (or marker)

The size of a quarter or a nickel or even a dime, is not too small if it contrasts with the surface. IMHO, white is the only simple way to go.

Because if someone putts and hits your ball, it's a penalty. No penalty for hitting a poker chip.
If you mark with a poker chip the ball would not have been in the way.

I don't do it for other people.
I do it so that I can line up my ball. Have to mark it to pick it up and move it. I'm out there to play for my score, not for someone else's.

How about loud clothing? Ugly golf bag? Yellow balls? Big purple Sharpie lines on golf balls? Baseball caps with my rival teams' logos? Or are ball markers in a separate category of things we need to mind? Common courtesy is one thing; this seems arbitrary to me. The only things that truly bother me on the golf course are slow play and miserable company. Don't be that person, and we're ok.

I use a large chip. I use a dime if I'm near anyone's line. I will move either upon request. Short of a marking device that alters the gravitational field on a green, I don't care.

I don't see very well and will often have a hard time finding my marker if it's a penny or dime (if it's a ways away from the cup), so I use a poker chip when I'm out a distance. If I'm inside a smaller circle (say four or five feet) where I'll be able to find it easily, I'll usually switch over to the dime or penny so it won't interfere with anyone else.

I did mark with my can of beer one time. Wasn't the type of group that that kind of thing would bother though.

The guy should have told Weiskopf to shove it. Just have never cared for him.
