I think he'd average low 4s on the 5s there. Every one is reachable and easy from green side.

 

All I'm saying is that I'd do better getting strokes on long par 4s than 520 yard par 5s. Or getting no strokes on 210 yard par 3s.

 

If we're playing a fair match and there are holes where he does better than I do, there has to be holes where I do better than he does.

I said he'd be -1 under most of the time on those 4 holes. Of course there will be a bogey here and there. But, you will double bogey those holes here and there too. I suspect your double bogey rate will be higher than his bogey rate, as well.

 

What do you think he averages out there?

And I don't know the exact stats, but a pro birdies fives often, bogeys a 3 or two, and birdies or bogeys a few 4s. Boom, 69ish. That's a regular day for them.

PQ, maybe you know this. What does Denny McCarthy average at Argyle? I know he has the course record at 61 or 62. That's someone that has beaten Phil in a tourney (US Open) but is on Web.com now and doing decent so far this year. Might be the closest comparison I can think of as a good golfer on a local course.

No idea what he averaged, but he went sub 70 every round I played with or against him in Friday games. He birdied those 5s all of the time.

 

I think Denny was a +3ish at the time.

 

Back to the hypothetical. Is this a match play or net stroke play match with PM?

no, I said he'd birdie every par 5 out there. I don't know what he averages. If his cap is legit, then his best rounds, he's shooting 67/66. But He's putting up some 70s. If he does that and gives me 14, hes dead.

 

If he shoots 68, what he'd do is maybe make a couple bogeys, and maybe 6 birdies on 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 18.

 

I'm saying my best shot is on all those 4s I'm getting a stroke.

Yes. Agreed. They're your best chance, but you were stronger in your initial statement. Glad we've cleared that up. If his cap is legit? Lol

 

Your cap at 5 is too high. It will adjust after 2 months to about 3.2 or so.

 

What would he give at Waverly? 12 strokes? Like I said. It'd be close. It'd have to be if the HCP adjustments are "fair."

Mickelson +5.8 is almost certainly not as good as he is. Those courses are set up way way harder than normal.

I don't think I'll do a putter re-grip though, I'll leave that for a quick trip in and out.

 

Edit: Ah crap... if I like the Epic 3 wood, whenever it gets here, I'll have to re-grip that one too. Good thing if I order a 5 wood, I can just request the blackout grip.

I'm getting my clock cleaned with 8 pops.

 

I'll tell you what holes I don't like my chances on - the long 4s. I'm making a lot of bogies or worse on those. I need pops on those to not lose a hole moreso than to win one.

 

I'd guess a couple of the 5s sneak into the top 8, so I like those. Probably a couple other shorter 4s in the top 8 as well. Those are holes I might pick up wins on.

 

That +6 based on tourney scores does seem like an undersell of his actual level of golf.

I feel like I've heard Gary McCord say that PGA tour pros play three scratch golfers straight up and have a slight edge. That was from the tips at Whisper Rock. That means the pros are makinglike 8 birdies. Seems like a lot to me. Anyway those guys are really really good

So the pgatour does actually keep a stat for scoring on par 4s between 450-500 yards that would have been relevant to last nights discussion. For whatever reason their website isn't working right for that stat but this one is unreal:

Am I the only one who doesn't think golf will actually be played Saturday? Maybe it's not as bad in northern Howard Co?

 

We got mainly ice around my house. A couple inches. Drove past Bowie this am and it looked worse with the melt and hard freeze than it did when it first came down. Montgomery Co got more snow, but less ice. It looks like there was basically zero melt and everything is solid frozen again.

in 28 rounds this year, Phil makes birdie or better 23.02% of the time. (Good for 3rd place)

I think the bigger point 2M2 made/I missed was that there is no way Phil is a +6, those slope/ratings are just the stock ones that are in the system. With the course setups, that +6 is more accurately a +8/9/10.

No. Our A/B team kickoff round on Saturday has already been postponed.
