Very impressive. It does have an Augusta-ish look to it. My only concern would be the maintenance and watering expense for all that turf. Other than that, I like it.

The course will play hard, flat and fast
Water conservation seems to be a key concern for Woods' design and maintenance team. He noted that the greens are designed to play hard and fast and to remain healthy even though they'll be watered at a minimum. "There are some easier chipping areas around the greens. The whole idea is to make it play fast, and give you a lot of options. We want these greens running really quick."

You get it hard and fast and shots around the green require more skill. The trick, IMO, is to make it tough with hard and fast conditions while keeping it fair.

Flat greens are not all bad. One of the toughest putts to make is a straight putt. But prolly not many straight ones out there as speed will accentuate even the slightest of breaks.

Houston is nice in the winter. But where would you live that you would want to go to Houston in the summer?

South Louisiana

Coming from someone who lives in Houston. If bluejack is in Houston, Newark is in mid town Manhattan.

That's a solid 30-40 miles from IAH, probably 50+ from the actual city, at least 20 from the woodlands.
Oh, OK. I thought it would be hotter than a popcorn fart like Houston.

So is it like 20* cooler out there? :taunt:

It looks good. The complaint I hear a lot in my travels is that many new courses are not playable by the 20+ capper: Over-the-top difficult layout, too much slope, etc. While you have to challenge the good player, the so-so player is the one keeping your doors open if it's fun to play.

I hope this is the first of many for him.

As someone who sprays the ball a little, ahem, I think it is a great idea to have an open course. The difficulty should be around the green where most strokes are anyway. I am frankly getting tired of golf here in the Swamp where I am expected to drive my ball through a gnat's a$$ 300 yards out.

Too bad they built that in Texas.... :)

 • 4 months later...

Used to play the old Blaketree National that was there previously. Unreal piece of property for the course and the bones were there. Crenshaw had a part in the original design. Last time I was home was able to drive the property while they were still doing dirt work and some sodding. With that piece of land and some good minds behind it, I think this could really be something special.

The course is certainly in a good area to replicate aspects of Augusta, as the Golf Club of Houston, which hosts the SHO, has been known to bear many similarities as well. As for the design philosophy, the emphasis on playability for a wide range of handicaps is in direct contrast with Nicklaus, which I'd suspect is very much intended. The not losing your ball component is one of MacKenzie's 13 design philosophies and is something that makes a course much more interesting IMO.

Tiger saved the game in 1995, gonna change the way new facilities are built, he just gets it
100% agree, but it needs to be affordable for people to get on. This club is going to be private only. Doesn't matter how nice it is if you can't get on because you don't live in the community he built it around. Stinks, but I get it. Most public players would wreck the course.

Would be nice if they held it open during certain time frames and charged a premium fee. I would pay!

They currently have 7 holes open for play, fortunate to play the course on Friday and we played the 7 hole tract 3 times. The course is fantastic and wide open fairways and pine straw in the trees similar to Augusta. The greens are elevated and tiered with lots of undulation. The sand traps are the best I've ever played out of. The group I was with consisted of 8 people and there was only one other foursome on the property so the pro said go ahead and play an 8some. They also have four man golf carts which was a blast. Great course can't wait until they open all 18 holes.

So will it be open to the public? Or are you/will you be a member of that living community?

The course is private and a friend of mine is a member. Their are also memberships available to those that buy a lot in the development.

You guys do realize that Tiger Woods (the person) had very little to do with designing this course, right? In reality Tiger designed Bluejack National as much as Lebron designed those shoes you're wearing. Im not saying that the course isn't good, but it should be noted that the design accolades should be attributed to his lead associates (i think they are a couple of ex fazio guys) not Tiger woods himself.

Unfortunately it is unlikely that Tiger's team builds too many "affordable" public courses. Part of this is due to the model of affordable public courses going out the window, primarily because golf courses cost so much to maintain. Additionally the value of the land that a golf course occupies in any sort of mildly populated area can be much more valuable as something else. Affordable courses are closing all over the country, simply because that business model is just no longer sustainable.

The other factor is that Tiger's firm won't really be hired for their ability to build a great golf course, they will be hired to so that they can market their course as "A Tiger woods Design". In order to get the "Designed by Tiger Woods Design" marketing line you have to pay a large design fee, which is not in line with building affordable public golf courses. The two courses that have been officially built by tiger (at this point) have been built by expensive private developers who are trying to sell real estate. The same thing happened with Jack Nicklaus.

While municipal courses will continue to exist (due to government subsidies), golf will be pushed back towards the private clubs as well as upper scale destination resort courses.
