Lateral Movement - this is very important, Really?

This should add to this conversation quite a bit:

Not the commentary, but just watching his swing. No real lateral movement in the upper body from takeaway through impact. So many things to copy here even if you aren't that flexible.

By lateral movement, I think the OP meant lower body lateral movement (maintaining fixed head position).

I didn't mean backswing. I meant on his downswing from where his left hip stops during the backswing. It appears his left hip goes past a bit but then starts to turn hard.

Im not taking backswing either. There is significant lateral motion in the downswing.

His left hip gets to the guy behind him's zipper. Look how far behind that the left hip is at the top of the swing

Are people still seriously debating this? How many videos need to be shown? In good players, the left hip moves closer to the target from the top of the backswing. It just does. Doesnt mean you need to feel a bump or says nothing about how to accomplish it. But, as a matter of indisputable fact, the left hip moves "laterally" (i.e. To a righty's left) from the top of the bs in every good player.

I think that those who don't understand think "laterally" means entirely along the target line.

I think it's more important to focus on the kind of stuff GG is talking about regarding the hips clearing and not sliding. Which, by the way, I've found is much easier to do when you have good flex in the knees. When my knees are too straight, the hips want to slide. With good flex in the knees, the hips want to rotate and clear.

Apparently, you don't have to shift laterally to get the pressure forward anymore. All you need to do is get that lead knee forward, while at the same time squatting into your trail side, and last second transfer all your weight and thrust up. It's that simple.

Is that what GG is talking about?

Dear Friends in Golf:

Thanks for comments and video you provided.

I also want to have a powerful image or picture that can help hit the ball straight such as railroad track running in front of me or pendulum clock swing.

Or have you seen Golf Swing Machine called 'iron byron swing machine?'

I am very new to this Forum, but I have spent over 30 years in playing Golf, and thanks for sharing your thought with me.

Yeh I'm sure most of us have seen iron Byron. It is a machine. What is your question? Not sure what a machine has to do with what good humans to do hit the ball.

Iron Byron is very simple with a single axis of pivot rotation with single plane of motion of the arm and club.

Judging from the title of this thread, you are in doubt whether lateral motion in a human golfer is necessary as compared to Iron Byron. My opinion would be that the pivot turning motion is similar to that of Iron Byron pivot rotation, added to that is the pivot tilting motion that the Iron Byron does not possess. The lateral move provides the pivot tilting motion.

If you want better help, post a video of your swing. As far as mental images, I don't recall ever really using any.

  • 2 years later...

The lateral move forward on the downswing is a SMALL, perhaps 2 inches, shift to the left BLENDING with a rotational move whose goal is to POST on the left leg.

I find that being in balance on your feet is crucial. My balance points are the balls of my feet, heels and...I feel that I grip the ground better by curling my toes down slightly inside my shoes to provide more lower body stability. Once the later-rotational blended movement concept is ingrained, the hit and complete turn posting weight to the left follow naturally in the proper sequence.
