Better movie - Happy Gilmore or Tin Cup?

I'm not sure that these two movies can be put into the same category. They're both about golf, sure, but one is slapstick, and the other is romcom.

 

The better movie as it pertains to film is Tin Cup, but the better comedy is Happy Gilmore.

Dare I say I love Caddyshack but Happy Gilmore is just too stupid. There. Boom.

Growing up Happy Gilmore was one of my favorite movies.

 

Now as an adult, If I had to pick one to watch right now, it would probably be Tin Cup.

Happy Gilmore achieved what it was trying to achieve far better than Tin Cup.

 

They are obviously different movies. Happy Gilmore was trying to be a over the top comedy that was just Adam Sandler at the height of his post SNL fame doing Adam Sandler things , in the all too common fish out of water setup. It was very clear on who it's target audience was and it succeeded in making these people laugh, and proved to be very quotable even mainstream

 

Tin Cup...who is the target audience for that movie? It's a romantic comedy set in golf. Except they take the golf too seriously for a true rom com. It's not really a mainstream movie, and hardly anyone outside of the golf community would even remember it....except i don't think it was targeted at hardcore golfers

Happy Gilmore for me! Ben Stillers character "Hal" in that movie always makes me crack up LOL

Tin Cup is a better MOVIE. Ron Shelton did the screen play. Better cast. Good story, believable characters. I like the theme of the movie. I have golf friends who argue that he should have laid up. I mean... way to miss the point.

 

Happy Gilmore is a solid entry in the Sandler pantheon, though.

 

Caddyshack was losing rewatchability MOJO as time went by. When Gilmore came out, it was obvious just how dated the humor in Caddyshack was. It's unwatchable now. There are so many horrible bits in that movie. Try to watch the boat scene or the baby Ruth scene and wonder how anyone ever laughed at that.

 

It was an important golf movie though. It set the bar.

 

These days, a DVD of that movie should come with a free bowl of soup.

I still watch Tin Cup when it's on, so would have to vote for that.

 

The gal in lingerie with the pitchers of beer isn't a bad scene tho :)

I think Happy Gilmore has a longer lasting effect on pop culture because of everyone who imitates the Happy Gilmore swing.....it might live on for decades the same way caddyshack does....

I can always watch all 3 whenever they're on. neither get old. i always liked watching happy gilmore as a kid and never got too much into caddyshack or tin cup. now that i'm older, it's the other way around. though i appreciate all 3.

Unfortunately you can't really compare the two. That would be like saying "Which movie was a better SEAL movie? Navy SEALs with Charlie Sheen or Lone Survivor with Mark Wahlberg?" I love both, but for different reasons. I never saw Tin Cup before I started playing golf back in 05, but I grew up with Happy Gilmore. I don't care what anyone says, that was the Adam Sandler I loved. Tin Cup is just a fun movie with some great quotes that pretty much every golfer knows. Sure it isn't 'realistic' per se, but for being a romantic comedy, it's a great movie. Plus, Rene Russo was smokin' hot! Now as far as the Simms vs. Shooter question, Shooter wins hands down. Simms isn't a villain, he's just a doosh bag, but a great doosh bag for the movie. Shooter is the epitome a-hole golf pro, and McDonald played him perfectly.

My favorite Shooter scene, and there are many LOL. But I swear I've seen people lose it like this on the course and I always end up laughing (inside of course) because I think of this. Gotta love the axe kick haha

It's opinion, but I'd rather watch happy gilmore.

 

It's slapstick comedy, but it's pertinent to golf and pop culture at the same time. "You eat pieces of s***for breakfast?" is not a golf line, but by itself is better than any line in tin cup.

 

Kevin Costner's golf swing sucks, but he's supposed to be able to play 9 holes par with a 7-iron? Please. (Btw, I hated bagger Vance for this reason...the dude's swing was horrible and inauthentic. Actually, danny noonan had the best swing of all golf movies)

 

I also just don't care much for Costner, or Renee Russo. Tin cup had amazing cameos, but happy had some great ones too.

 

On the balance, he story and point of happy gilmore are just more enjoyable to watch.

I really like both movies. Will watch either if they are on TV. Tin Cup is the better movie to me. I can relate more to Tin Cup. Always going for it even if it's the wrong thing to do.

Tin Cup. Tried watching Happy Gilmore the other day and turned it off after 5 minutes, just boring to me now. Tin Cup can watch any day.
