First post on a new page.💥 I own page 1399 and I am claiming that now. 😅

 

1399 is it? That means the big 1400 is next! 

I started hanging around the Grille in early August.

It is a fun and happening place for sure, and also quite the comfortable club of geezers to be a part of.

 

Well this one has part of the correct number in it so I will hit L 8 on the jukebox and play some Prince to celebrate.  😀 🕺

We have freezing rain happening at the moment which will turn to more snow this afternoon. It does not look like outdoor golf for the next couple weeks. I will enjoy my time with my internet friends and maybe play the odd simulator game after Christmas.

 

I went to my heated storage locker yesterday and organized my clubs just for something to do. I went through the “plethora” of classic woods that were rescued last fall, many will be given to friends that are curious about playing the vintage woods. I need to thin the herd a little as my new apartment at the golf course will be smaller. I will always have a minimum of six right handed hickory right handed and one left handed irons and an assortment of woods and putters for promoting hickory play. My classic sets will be limited to three with at least a bag of the best playable woods and early “metal woods”.  Everything must be playable.
 

For what I consider my most modern set, my newest club is a TM SIM Max 2 Driver and everything else is at least five years older. I see no reason to replace my old VSteel FW clubs. I also have my old Adams Idea Pro (20* and 23*) hybrids for occasional play since they have each got HIO’s on their resume. The most expensive putter and favourite is my Otey Crisman which cost me $40 plus another $15 to get a new suede grip. My other favoured putters are three Bullseye’s.

 

Thanks guys for tolerating my musings and a special thanks to Stu for expanding my appreciation of the classic era clubs over the last year. I also want to thank the Honma guys for providing such nice entertainment.

An inquiring mind from the peanut gallery would like to know the official "Grille" classification of modern vs classic vs vintage club labels.

 

Would like to read some thoughts from any of the esteemed members of the Grille roundtable.

 

Some of us geezers (myself included) appear to have all 3 in our everyday bags.

I don’t really think that there is anything official as far as classification. The possible exception would be hickory shafted clubs which are fairly easy to classify. 
 

My own personal classification of classic is arbitrarily defined as covering the early steel shafted era starting with pyratone shafts up until around 1980 steel shaft offerings. I think of vintage as 25 years or older but it is strictly my own interpretation.

 

A few of us in the Golf Historical Society of Canada have started to promote some vintage play in addition to promoting hickory play. When playing what we call classic steel, we really don’t care what irons you play, we usually focus more on playing real wood heads. We believe that all clubs should be played and don’t buy into the modern marketing hype.

 

The focus is on fun and embracing the challenge of scoring well with the old stuff. It is the reason why I never consider putting modern shafts in an old club, I am more interested in playing a club using the appropriate flex for me in its original form. Others feel differently and that is all right.

There is no reason to replace a V-Steel. Now I will admit my 3 wood is resting because I built a Cally Razr but I am not getting rid of it by any stretch of the imaginazation.
