Why in the world would I jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

The harness was attached to a rope on your back and had at least 10 ft. of slack. Stepping off of that ledge and falling straight down took everything I could muster. Once hanging on the cable and moving horizontally it was great. But that first step.......

the emergency back up chute. It was pounded into our heads something like "pull, 

punch, punch, punch again if necessary and something else.

 

Our back up chutes as first time jumpers were manual chutes back then. I think the

auto open barometric pressure sensitive chutes were around but they didn't have them

there that day. I jumped at the Elsinore Paracenter at Lake Elsinore in SoCal FWIW.

Ya, that first step into oblivion is scary and a rush.

 

I don't care much for heights myself. The parachute ride at Knotts Berry Farm was scarier

to me than the real thing. It just kept going up and up. I'm like "are we at the top yet?" The

fall didn't bother me at all. It was the ride up that was scary. Just kept going up. Enough

already!

I used to go there on the South side of the Lake up the mountain and watch the hang gliders fly there. I had some plans to make a Rogallo Wing glider. Best I never did that as those were not very safe. There were several places there in So Cal that had gliders.

Ya, lots of SoCal places with good updrafts. Some guys can stay up there for a long time just

floating around on the updrafts. I never tried hang gliding or parasailing. Always thought I

would. Just never did and the years went by. Now I'm too old...... or too sane, lol.

 

Never tried bungee jumping either. That always seemed like it would be a rush. Talk

about falling......

My dad was an amateur pilot just flying small planes. He got the glider bug and went up

a few times in gliders. Had to get someone to tow you up there.

Where does a guy go wearing that much hardware?  Sounds like he was half-man half-antenna.

Kinda anxious to hear from Stu since he’s no stranger to fall injuries and such.  
 

He could probably set me straight on this one but I recall there being a bungee jump around North Myrtle 10 years ago.  Tourists lined up for it day and night.  The story I heard was it was closed down after one or two folks went splat.

Interesting how training would be so different. Mae West of other failure, our procedure was to hold the reserve after opening to throw out and away from a partial main canopy not out of control. Cut away with a bad main, was rolling on your back and feed out with your hands. Aw, the immortality of youth!

Very cool. Only did a glider flight once, but I like engines. it’s a control thing I have.

Had a bizarre thought. I know, shock.

 

I made this great red sauce the other day for pasta. Thick, meaty and flavorful.

 

I have never seen anyone eat it like chili. It has all the meat and texture, add some beans if you want. Add some grated cheese like people do on chili. Substitute some ricotta instead of sour cream like some do and voila!

 

Eat it like chili. Add a grilled cheese on some garlic bread. I’ve never seen it. Am I nuts? You can add some heat with red pepper flakes. What’s not to like?

 

@bscinstnct will probably tell me it’s a staple in NYC.

Even landing in water hurts from high enough up........and when you're not expecting

If memory serves, the jump was on dry land.  Can see how the term ‘splat’ suggested otherwise. lol    Just did a search on it.  Turns out it was in the 90s.   A kid did lose his life but it was because of an out of spec single cable winch system that lifted the jumper up to the top.  Cable snapped.

But you can just pile a ton of sauce on your pasta, still dip bread, but you got all the pasta there too, win-win

Yes, that's extreme but sure looks like fun! The dirty little secret is the dirty little deuce

he dropped in his suit at take off.  What do you think his stall speed is? Gotta keep that

forward speed going. Very cool G move he made before opening his chute.

My nephew does skydiving and para-gliding. Says the death rate on wingsuits is 90% overtime if they persist.

 

I had a chance to skydive, waited all day for clouds to lift, was glad they called it when they did. I liked jumping into water. Used to do 35 foot cliffs and 50-foot long rope swings. I'm good with that.

No, my bad on the water. I just assumed bungee jumping was done over water. I would

only do it over water! Well, not now. I wouldn't do it at all now.😀
