Funny. But absolutely true.  And it affects both sexes.     Watch interviews of young women. They’re not happy about the neutered  males either. They just don’t know how to put their  fingers on the problem , because they don’t understand the importance of male role models. Unless they’ve had one.

Yesterday's round recapped because I know everyone wants to hear about it.

#1- Rushed to the first tee 20 minutes before our tee time by my 89-year-old playing partner so we can get off before a group of four elderly women.  Warm-up consists of one attempted toe touch.  Get as far as my knees.  First drive carry distance is approximately 15 feet.  All worm-burner the rest of the way.  Make a solid double bogey.

#2- Inexplicably, I actually get up and down from a lie way above the hole for a par.

#3- Beautiful drive finishes in a divot.  Scrape out a bogey.

#4- Short par 3. PW to 5 feet, with a little side-sauce even.  Ends up being CTP.  Ka-ching!

#5- Routine par on a routine par4

#6- Up and down for a birdie on a par 5 that loves me for some reason

#7- Bounce-back double bogey.  Down my first airline sized Jim Beam Apple

#8- Hit the green with a 7 iron on a downhill par 3.  2 putt par.

#9- Get up and down for par on a par 5 that hates my guts.  Very rewarding.  So I reward myself with another JBA.   Front nine in 40.  Pretty good for me.

 

#10- Crappy drive, sliced 7 wood that actually end up on green.  Par.

#11- Another crappy drive but a decent 6 iron into collar.  Par.   

#12- Bogey on a par 3 due to chunked chip.  Down my last Jim Beam.

#13- 20 footer drops for birdie.

#14- 25 footer drops for another birdie.  What's going on here?

#15- Routine bogie.  That's more like it.

#16- Same.  

#17- Par 3. Wishing I had brought more mini-Beams.  Still, knock an 8 iron to 22 inches. Another Birdie and another CTP.  Unreal.

#18- Up and down for birdie on a short but tricky par 5.  35 on back is 1 under and first time I've ever broken par for a nine.  75 is my low round for the year and beats all the other geezers.  Combined with my CTPs, I am rolling in pro shop credit.  I may just quit golf now that I'm on top.  No where to go but down.  Nevertheless, God bless America!

Believe it or not that last one is common here this time of year. They have been on local media for the last week explaining fireworks safety. But the ones who really need it as in Tourons do not watch local TV. Our local news starts at 5AM and so I am waiting to hear the 4th of July fireworks causality report for this year.

I will call BS on the less side spin. I remember when those balls came out. I ended up with several 2 ball sample packs. I can remember hitting one with an early graphite shafted King Cobra driver. In those days graphite shafts were not what we know now. I actually had a hooking problem in those days anyhow. I was messing around with that driver and one of those balls. I hit a toe hook and that ball hit that Carolina hard clay sun baked fairway. It took off running like the Energizer Bunny. 

 

LOL when I cleaned out the building across the road in February I found my old Ping Staff bag (long story there) in the recesses of the building. Now ever since I found money in another bag I had hidden and forgot about I check my old bags. I found what appeared to be 2 of those sample packs of the Magma balls. The sleeves were reduced to rubble but the balls were there. They went with that bag full of clubs to the guy who bought the stuff. I can remember a few years back Callaway who bought some of the Spalding/Hogan rights tried to revive that ball. Generally I think it went over as well as a turd in the punch bowl at a church social. I found like 2 on the course. Never saw any of the people I play with play them.

That may explain some things. According to my wife all these younger women hit on me. Now I am a big guy and do not consider myself a George Clooney type looking guy. I notice it sometimes but I tend to ignore it in general. Last thing I need at 66 yoa soon to be 67 is a 20 something 30 something woman. Besides after 38 years I am still happy at home. My wife also says it is because of my up front Southern Gentleman demeanor. I am what I am and was always taught to treat a lady like a lady. I know all Northern women especially Canadian ladies love my accent. There I speak as I speak.

I also think some of these old guys around here in many cases widowed and have money put on airs trying to impress the young girls with like flashy cars and fancy clothes. I do have nice golf clothes but when not on the course I run around dressed in what is called shabby clique beach style with my long hair down in tee shirts and crocs. But like I say I am me and do not put on no show. My wife also says because I am a big guy and carry myself well that I have a certain Teddy Bear cuddly factor. Like I say I shrug it off and I am just me no apologies. I also think my wife tends to exaggerates things now that she is older

Yesterday was a good 4th for me. The wife worked Wednesday night. I started out to the course and stopped at Kroger to get some fruit as is my pre round routine. LOL those slackers did not have any cut fruit. I ended up getting me a small cantaloupe. Went to the course as SOP for me early. I am a redneck after all and carry tools in the car including knives. Took that thing over to a bench near the cart barn and cut it up. Of course washed the bench off. Got into the little old school lunch box I carry in the car and got a plastic knife and fork and my tin of black pepper. Used the Kroger bag and cut the loupe into small pieces and peppered it good and put in my cooler. Munched on it the whole round. 

Now this year I have had some time outs playing golf due to cold weather and I had pulled a muscle a few weeks back but looking in my notebook that was my 50th round this year including a few shootouts. I was also looking in that book and had like 15 Par3 rounds so far. I played 5 days straight this week including a 7 club vintage round early Sunday morning. Since I quit my Sunday gig, I slide out to the course early Sunday morning and play and get home and take a shower and eat before the services we watch on TV begin. My body began to tell on me yesterday. I did not have any pain or stiffness but had trouble getting the club back the last 9 holes. Today I am staying home no golf for me. We do have the first tee time off on Saturday morning on the Par3. I am feeling it so I am more than likely playing the Hickory sticks. Sunday morning early I will play a 7 club vintage round. Next week I am signed in for Mon, Wed and Fri for the small money game. We have a smaller group there and do some little like $1 side bets. I am not playing the Tue and Thurs regular league

Oh yes I stopped by the local Produce/fruit stand on the way home. Got me 2 local lopes and a local melon. Both are in the fridge on the porch. Told the wife I am not depending on the slackers at Kroger anymore. LOL I was give out (as we say down South) took a shower and went to bed like 5:00. Just got up and am now having coffee and cold pizza which is one of my favorite things. Evidently the wife ordered pizza last night when I was conked out.

Yesterday was yard work all day. Ran the mower, string trimmer and weeded half the flower beds with 85* temps and 70% humidity.  Lots of water breaks. Gave up at 5, came in, had a bowl of ice cream and took a 2 hour nap.  Got up from the recliner, took a hot shower and laid down in bed. And it’s now coffee time.  🙃

 

Got the gutter folks coming to replace everything hanging on the house today, so another day of no golf.  Getting them new fangled gutter guards because I live in a forest!

was fascinated by something i watched about regenerative farming and cattle ranchers. getting rid of so many expensive and useless fertilizers and letting nature regenerate grazing fields that create new biodiversity and habitats for other species. it’s all about the soil and conventional farming destroys the soil.

 

thumbing their noses at industrial farming. it’s a tough sell when they’ve been doing the “conventional” way for generations. and going broke, while the chemical and other support people get rich.

 

the farmers are happy, the cattle are happy and healthier, productivity is way up, but most of the conventional farmers, as usual, resist change.

 

they'd rather go broke than change.

I do not need to do any yard work right now. We have not had hardly any rain and I am certainly not watering or putting fertilizer down. Actually 2 weeks ago when I cut grass I had the mower on the lowest setting. I decided to take it down further and got the weed whacker out. I cut it tight.

Where I live we have a few nosy old farts with nothing else to do that ride around on golf carts generally in the way and a nusicence. One remarked "cutting the grass that low and it will burn up in this heat" I told him I know and that is what I wanted to do now ride up the road and MYOB. Probably 12 years ago now the resident manager said something to me about planting grass. I told her she needed to look at the contract. It only says about cutting grass and maintaining flower beds if one has them. I told her I was not spending my hard earned money on grass seed and water. I further told her if they wanted grass then they could plant seed and spend their dime on water. But if you do that then you will be cutting it. Never heard a peep since

I've found that a lot of golfers are really good guys, but there is also a good-sized contingent of prissy d-bags who will take the opportunity to complain about anything.

Sounds good if you ask me. I can remember back 2 weeks or so they did a complete aeration of our course. Now they swept the plugs into the roughs and used some on the bare areas in both fairways and roughs. Now some people become instant ignorant when they open their pie holes. In our league the last 2 weeks we have been playing it up everywhere due to plugs being in roughs and some bare spots. One of the Northern Nuclear Scientists (he thinks he is anyhow on any subject) said that just raking the plugs over was sheer laziness. I called BS on him in front of everyone. I told him first off it saved the club money in labor and besides those plugs are organic and have seed and nutrients in them. I asked him if he thought in his pea sides brain if it would do us any good dumping them in the woods to rot? Now some 2 weeks later most plugs are gone and they did spread them out and our fairways and roughs are popping. The course owner asked me what I thought on the fairways Thursday? I told them they were great that even though we play the ball up in the fairways I did not touch mine all day that every lie I had was good. Now our greens have a ways to go and this drought is not helping but they are improving.

If you go back in history when we were in school and they actually taught us something useful I learned the Indians showed the early settlers how to put dead fish around crops for fertilizer. Used to be a lot of fertilizers were liquid and made from fish emulsion. I can remember growing up we used to haul sewer sludge from the waste treatment plant and mix it with sand and use an old school manure spreader to spread it out on the course. Now days for what ever reason you can not buy it but can buy what is called Millorginite which is processed sewer sludge processed and pelletized. LOL used to have to take a nail on the end of a stick and pick out used condoms from the sludge then ride the course to further check. Trust me I do not miss those days. We also used to haul chicken manure out from the chicken farmers, and they were more than glad to give it to us and take their front end loaded and load it. With chicken manure you have a high content of nitrogen, and you have to mix it about 15% manure to sand. If you do not you will burn the grass up. Yes I ran many a mile on my old 8N Ford tractor with an old school manure spreader.

Yep I totally agree with the farmers here. The more I live the more I see the old school natural ways are better

I agree 110%. Most that play golf do not know zilch about agronomy. Most do not have common sense. Our supers here do a good job against worse odds than many. I have had northerners say "oh when we get back up North our greens will be pristine" I tell them that is because they are under snow and have not having all you SOBs trampling them to death. What makes it bad here during the transition season is when we need to be aerating, we are in the middle of the crossover winter/spring tourist season. Generally, we aerate late on the beach compared to most places. Most courses around here aerate during Bike Weeks when golf is generally slow. Our course was even later this year because they are family owned and did not have the equipment and manpower to do a full aeration on their own. It looks like several of our greens will have to be re sod. But yes our super works his butt off with limited staff and resources

Wanna do a quick shout out to @scotee for recommending rain gloves for those of us with sweaty hands playing in hot humid weather in the summer.

 

I bought a pair of Mizuno rain gloves and have used them the past 2 rounds. They are awesome. Absolutely zero slippage with them on.

 

I play gloveless most of the year but when it gets to July and August I need help holding onto my club.

 

I tried regular golf gloves but they would get soaked quickly and rendered useless. 
 

Rather than carrying multiple pairs of regular gloves to change into, one pair of the Mizuno rain gloves does the job for the entire round.

 

They cost less as well. Around $20 a pair. I like ‘em so much I just bought a few more pair for backups, lol.
