Yep at our ages we have to look at what courses we play now. A good example here is TPC Myrtle Beach which is actually in Murrells Inlet in my back yard. Forced carries are the norm. I have played it twice and will never go back again. Now back in the day I would have relished it. Quite a few courses here use a lot of waste bunkers which is smart on their part to cut down on cart path maintenance. Now one has to get used to playing out of them. Now one of the groups I play in a couple of the players have had open heart surgery and are not allowed to hit out of them because they are hard as concrete most times. I have no problem with them doing so. The club I have joined now lends itself for vintage play as it is an old school course. Another course on my package membership is a Gary Player designed course and I have never played it with persimmon but looking forward to it when it dries up and warms up

Rad you might want to go over on the Courses and travel section--- They are having a discussion on the RTJ trail courses in your area saying they are in decline--- Maybe you could tune in and give us your perspective over here

Thanks Stu! BTW, I like your approach. It's kinda hard today to purchase clubs that don't have stronger lofts. My adjustment has been more "wedges". Your 48ΒΊ PW would be a gap wedge today...with an AW between the PW and GW. There seems to be a full two club loft difference in today's clubs, and the one's you referenced. So yeah, I hit my 7-iron longer, but...lol.

@Gauchograd99 I once owned what was at the time the most forgiving clubs in the galaxy. I thought I made a wise decision buying them due to there "forgiving" nature. However, they proved to be anything but. More often than not I hit low pull hooks with them. One day after hitting another pull hook off the tee, my friend says, "Here Sean, try my 4-iron."
"Uh Dave, you play a blade, if I can't hit this UGI iron, how am I going to hit a blade", I responded.
"Go ahead," as he hands me his Nike TW VR Pro. So, I tee it up, take a swing, and...hit this nice, high little draw right down the middle.
"Are you f.....g kidding me!" I exclaim looking at Dave. I learned at that moment, that forgiveness is overrated.
So for the rest of the round, I hit his irons and played much better than with my UGI's. I made the godawful mistake of relating my experience of GolfWRX. I was HAMMERED. One guy called me a "liar". He said science says what I did was impossible. I tried to explain that I was there when it happened, but he just kept calling me a liar and it was impossible.
Because of that experience, I hesitate to say that blades are not all that hard to hit. But if I venture that opinion it's as if I peed in church or something. Blades are supposed to be hard to hit...everyone knows that, ;-). Besides, if you look at today's "blades" versus the ones from yesteryear, today's look more like a GI iron, lol. I also hesitate to say that forgiveness is overrated.

Ran into that Saturday. It was windy as heck. All the guys had modern clubs including a set of PXGs which BTW are 1 1/2 clubs stronger than my Mac blades ( I have his build sheets in my file). Now it was cold and windy and we had this Par 3 over water around 160 or so. Normally a 6 iron for me. Those cats took one club extra so mostly 6 irons. I took a 4 iron and they laughed but not for long. All of them were in the water. I hit a 8 ft high screamer to the right side of the green away from the trap with a little cut on it. Of course I had a 60 ft down hill putt on a wind blown dry fast green which I promptly 3 putted still won the hole

Radio Rambos, LOL!

I didn't start playing until I turned 50, so I never had any distance to mourn over. In fact, I hit it longer now (longer being very relative), at almost 65 than when I was 50. So for me, ego was never really part of golf. I can understand how hard it is for you guys who have been playing your entire lives to see your distance fall off. It's not just the distance, it means we are getting older too, lol.

For me, the solution was simple: move up. So instead of killing myself trying to hit the ball farther, I moved up to an appropriate tee box where I hit far enough. While I continue to work hard on my game, I want to have fun too when I play, and the game is hard enough. I don't need my ego to make it that much more difficult. So when it talks to me I tell it to STFU.

Well my friend I think you have taken to the blade gospel---- I will admit in my case they are easier to hit because that is what I have hit most of my life--- I will also say that GI SGI irons are easier for some folks to hit because that is all they have ever hit. But I will never argue for someone else if blades are better or not for their game. To each his own that is what makes the world go round

@Fellaheen51 Thank you! Regarding your other comments, I am reminded of what Alexander Hamilton once said:
β€œEvery man of a different opinion from your own [seems] an ambitious despot or a corrupt knave.” And nowadays, many people see a difference of opinion as a personal attack, and not for what it is: a simple difference of opinion.

Well that tells me you have adapted--- Look at WRXer Obee he plays scratch golf and is formidable player in AM circles on the West Coast--- A older guy at my former club plays mostly hybrids I think he carries 5 or so. Besides the putter and driver he carries a wedge and that is it. He is in his late 70s and regularly shoots his age. He can do some amazing stuff with those hybrids. It all goes with knowing your game and setting up equipment that works for you. Yep for me it is 4 head covers in the bag now with the 2 hybrids and i used to be a decent long iron player--- Father Time marches on so we have to keep on adapting that's all

Timing is everything... I just finished a lengthy response to the most recent blades are easier to hit thread basically saying that if you thought they were easier to hit, it was all in your head. Perhaps they are for some, but I ain't one of them! So now I get to look forward to a little bit of flamethrower blowback no doubt. I'm a slow learner...

On the Australian web site I used to frequent we had a person who had a little problem properly explaining himself but if you took the time to read his posts there was a wealth of information, he was given such a hard time by the idiots that he eventually stopped posting, several others dropped out as a result of the comments. The site has now been taken over by new owners who have let it go to waste and the members have started up their own site, but, they are all the same people with the same attitude, cannot see it being any better in the long term.

Β

I find it strange that the minority groups can now stop any discussion they do not like but can say anything they want without any legal repercussions. It will eventually reverse so that we once again have normality but I think that may be long after my time is up.

Thanks Stu. I read the thread and choose not to participate, or argue, with others.

Β

Capitol Hill, where I play most of my RTJ rounds, is a big, busy place. 54 holes, a huge circular driving range and multiple

practice greens and chipping/pitching areas/practice sand bunkers. As such it attracts large numbers of "locals" in addition

to golf visitors from out of the local area. It's not in decline or do I think it will be in decline anytime soon, lol.

Β

Heck, they just spent money to redesign some of the holes on the Legislator course............and raised prices 10% Jan.1.

A place in decline wouldn't be doing these things.

good to see you back Sean !

Typical winter here in southern Ohio, rainy, cold, windy.

All the talk on clubs is good to see ! I am going to start another year with the One Lengths.

Am looking at upgrading to the F8's, ! Maybe. I wish i had these years ago. I cant say that they are so

great, but i do seem to have improved my GIR,and the number of good shots with the 6I thru the wedges

has gotten a lot better.Hoping all you guys have a nice spring !

I seem to have gotten away with it so far. Maybe I'm just too old and too lousy at golf for anyone to care what I say? It's almost got my nerve worked up to comment on How do you quantify a hacker?

When I win the lottery a Grille meet up will happen. These guys are truly good guys. I have only met the Radster in person but I know it would be quite a time. Nice to have you stop by @Sean2 even if you have that reputation as a trouble maker.......NOT.

Saw the thread in question this morning, after you referenced it. Went back to read and its disappeared into the digital ether. Hmmm!!!! The OP of that one has been starting several "interesting" threads of late. That have ended up in lock down. Can't figure out if he's legit or a shtick. NTTM.

Don't think I'm a hacker even though I can hack it around the course on occasion. But I hack quickly. However, understand and follow all the proper golfing protocols. I'm not a rube. But I play with shirt tail untucked most of the time. Is that a tell?
