The excitement to me is the fact that anyone can win it. It's close, I like that so many different guys are winning. I hope this is DJ week.

It wouldn't be a major if DJ didn't build a lead to blow on Thursday and Friday.

I expect another meltdown

Commentators can hype them up all they want, but these guys have a long way to go before they can walk with that title. The tour is desparate to replace the excitement Tiger brought to the table, but Tiger is a once in a hundred years talent and cant be replaced overnight.

Yes, they are desperate to replace the hype. Yes, Tiger had a talent that does not come along very often, and when it does they don't always have the charisma. Jack and Arnie were a combo of Tiger like talent and Arnie had the charisma while Jack had Tiger like talent. Player was part of that eras made for TV Big 3 as well.

The thing to remember is that Jack, Gary and Arnie rarely all duked it out on the leaderboard in the same week. Jack actually had many memorable duels with them all including Trevino, Watson etc. So if Rory misses the cut and Jordan and Day aren't in the final group on Sunday it wouldn't surprise me. Golf is a marathon not a sprint, the rivalries will play out over the next 10 years or so.

Tiger was a cultural phenomenon, people watched golf that didn't really love golf, same with the NBA when Jordan played, same with Ali in boxing.

Trust me, I won't be calling a bookie. I would just like to see it happen. When left the eagle putt 6 ft short on 4 this morning and then missed the birdie.....I was cringing and thought "here we go again".....he let it go and had a pretty good round...see what this afternoon brings

I would honestly love to see DJ play to his potential and start winning majors, but he just doesnt seem to have the nerve to play his best under pressure. Doesnt make me a hater, hell I would have a sad life if I spent any energy hating a pro golfer. I just enjoy dramatic Sunday back nines in majors, and epic chokes certainly add to that drama.

The first is usually the toughest. If he gets his first major, he will win many, I think. He has The Great One in his corner, too. If anyone can help teach DJ to win, it's Mr. Gretzky.

Was Tiger REALLY that much more talented than some of these guys on tour? Tiger out worked everyone else... on the range, on the course, between his ears, in the gym... he worked and worked and worked. And he listened to all of his own hype which only fed his confidence even more. As a result, his body is a wreck and didn't last, but regardless, he put on a hell of a great 10 years.

I think the guys on tour are a little soft now. Lots of money, thanks to Tiger, and they just don't look as hungry. A few of them call up Tiger and ask for the winning formula... and I'm sure he tells them to work their butts off every day.

Good point on the money softening up the big 3 and the guys in general.

TW would play 70 shots as if each was an individual work of art. I think he said that to somebody. Doesnt matter if its Thursday or Sunday, every shot is the same. And, I imagine, TWs expectations for every single shot would be very high.

*Even if he is not in contention.*

That level of craftsmanship and ability to focus over 4 full days is not seen in the game now.

I would think that combination of discipline and willpower is hard to maintain. Especially if you know you are gonna make $1MM a week no matter what you do.

And that is a big part of it. TW didnt do it for the money. He did it because it was his game and he just wanted to knock out anybody else who was trying to be king of the hill.

Cmon Man it's just one tournament.

Really. No one talked about how soft the TOUR was last year as Jordan Spieth won five tournaments, including two majors, and Jason Day won five times, including the PGA Championship.

News flash, folks: The top players in golf can't win five times a year for 10 straight years.

Golfers like Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods were exceptions. Don't expect today's "Big 3" to duplicate the feats of these legends.

These greens are getting so difficult to hole out from longer than 10 foot. If Spieth can play better tee to green I can see him dragging back in to this today, because of his putting prowess.

No. It's a Major.

And if DJ, no scratch that to be if anyone, is thinking that they will surely not win. Worry about the history, the major, the US friggin' Open, at Oakmont and no chance. It is a tournament to win, nothing more.**

Stick a fork in Jordan, he's done. Day has played the round of the tournament to drag himself back into the picture, but he still needs a few in front of him to start going backwards to have a chance, or go out there and shoot something totally miraculous and unfathomable like a 63.

The money softening up the top players is bogus. Tiger signed on for more money than he could possibly spend when he turned pro. He also could have bought and sold the current top 3 put together at the same stage of his career. Tiger was so good for so long cause he was never about money, he was about winning championships, or just winning in general. You could see how much he loved being in the heat of battle, loved the pressure of competition. The higher the stakes the more he liked it. I also think that Tigers talent is sometimes overlooked, if you watch a highlights reel he plays shots that noone else in the game is capable of pulling off, it's just that he will play conservative shots and coast to a one shot win if thats all he needs to do. He plays percentage golf and plays to win. Of the current big 3, I only see traces of Tiger in Day and Spieth. I don't see any real grit and ability to grind in Rory. He doesnt seem to have the ability to grind out a score to stay in the tournament when things go wrong. Day has shown today that even when he doesnt have a realistic chance to win, he can still knuckle down and try to finish as high up the leaderboard as he can.
