Alabama golf trip

Boys and I are planning a trip to Alabama in May. Need thoughts/opinions on the best trips, courses, etc.

Muscle Shoals RTJ is good. Grand National RTJ is good. Ross Bridge (RTJ) and Farmlinks (not RTJ but worth playing) are my two favorites.

How far south you plan on heading? Driving? Flying? How many days? I know a lot of questions but it may help some of us answer you.

 

We do the RTJ trail every year. Key is to minimize driving...relax and have a few beverages with the boys.

 

Option 1 - Ross Bridge, Oxmoor Valley. Right next to each other. From here within 2 hours you can get to Shoals or Silver Lakes.

Option 2 - Grand National Resort and within 1:15 minutes be a Capitol Hill.

 

Never been south of Cambrian Ridge so no clue.

How many rounds? How long you visiting? How much driving you want?

 

But best options as a base - Birmingham (Ross Bridge & Oxmoor), Prattville/Montgomey (Capitol Hill), or Auburn (Grand National). Each base offers different things. All are within an hour or so of Farmlinks which I think is a can't miss for an Alabama golf trip.

We are driving from St. Louis. Leaving early on a Monday morning, play 18, 36 Tuesday, 36 Wednesday, and an early 18 before returning Thursday night.

I'm biased I'll admit. Florence, AL is one of my favorite little towns in America. That said, The Shoals is underrated when it comes to the Trail. Because it sits isolated from the rest of the Trail courses it usually isn't a consideration for guys making a trip and trying to see two or three different Trail sites.

The Shoals is great. I'm sure we have discussed Fighting Joe and The Schoolmaster in a previous thread. If we choose Alabama, I'd like to play courses that are new to the group, i.e. some form of The Judge, Ross Bridge, Grand National, and Cambrian Ridge.

All solid courses. You just can't go wrong on The Trail.

Farmlinks is a must play. RTJ Oxmoor Valley and RTJ Grand National for sure. Also, (you have to stay in the cottages on property) Willow Point CC is an outstanding course. Depending on how long you're staying, get to RTJ Capital Hill in Prattville. Another solid course about an hour north of Birmingham is Limestone Springs.

My suggestion would be to drive in and play an afternoon round at Oxmoore (valley), then Oxmoore (ridge) and Ross Bridge, from there you can go to Silver Lakes, Hampton Cove, or the Shoals, and play the last round at the Shoals before heading back. The shoals will give the shortest drive home. We go every year, and twice/year the last few. We always end at the Shoals before heading back to Arkansas. Great courses and fantastic value. Ross Bridge doesn't do twilight rates, so no advantage to playing there the day you drive in. I think the "magic" package has a round at Oxmoore and RB in the same day. You could also start in Birmingham at Highland Park, great deal and interesting layout. If you only play one round at Oxmoore I would recommend Ridge over Valley. For the other three I would rate them Shoals/Silver Lakes/Hampton Cove. You really wouldn't be going wrong playing your last two days at the Shoals, play both and pick your favorite for the last round. I like Fighting Joe over School Master, but they are both great tracks. If you decide to do two days in Muscle Shoals then head to Champy's for dinner, if you like fried chicken and beer it's the place to be.

We are going next week as well. We are doing Oxmoor Valley Ridge the afternoon of arriving (Thur), 36 at Farmlinks on Fri, and then 36 at Ross Bridge on Sat.

haven't played the frog in a couple of years but remember it being a very fun layout. the rest of your lineup is strong. Farmlinks is awesome!
