I never thought of Tom Kite and Kathy Whitworth as 'cool.' Neither did I think of Byron Nelson that way either, although I greatly admire the man.

I was at USC when Mahan came for his recruiting trip. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING cool about Hunter Mahan.

 

edit: when I say I was there, I don't mean going to USC. I went to UCSB but two of my best friends were at USC on scholarship and I was visiting.

Since no one else has thrown it into the mix, how about the real state for the aforementioned Sam Snead, Virginia. Since winning is certainly cool, how about the Tour leader in that category? If you read some of the stories of his gambling exploits and some of his infamous "pigeons", Mr Snead certainly makes my list of golf's cool characters. Other native Va's of golfing note,but might make the Hot Head list instead of cool, Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins are Major winners. JC Snead and Bobby Wadkins are less accomplished than their family members, but had long careers on Tour. And for today's crop of Tour pros, does it get much cooler than Billy Hurley at the helm of a US Navy Destroyer cruising thru the Panama Canal while maintaining a game that led him to Tour winner post naval commitment? Although I love my home state and proud of it's golfing native sons and daughters, I agree that the Monarch of Cool will always be the King.
