ASK QUESTIONS: Live Q&A with Srixon Golf Balls!

Recommended Posts

Looking forward to playing the new ball, I have been playing the Z Star XV Tour Yellow for the last few years.

I am a fan of the Tour Yellow due to playing more in the evening and feel that I can follow the ball a longer distance compared to a white ball. I am curious what the percentage of the Z-Star and Z-Star XV you sell in the Tour Yellow compared to the White. I assume more white due to more of them being lost :P

Kind regards

Teaj

We sell a very healthy percentage of both white and yellow golf balls! We do sell more white than yellow, though. Thanks for your support!

Very kind of Srixon to take some time with everyone's question, and here is mine.

As the Z Star has continued to lower compression over time to 88 with this year's release, where does this year's Z Star and the new Q Star Tour differentiate themselves from one another?

Thank you much! (fan of the old Z Star SL if you can't tell!)

Yes, thank you!

Q-STAR TOUR has 75 compression, Z-STAR has 88.

Z-STAR SL had 80 compression. Q-STAR TOUR features a more advanced core, and it has the Spin Skin coating and Speed Dimple pattern that the Z-STAR SL did not have.

Many users have reported the new XV to be "clicky" or hard feeling off their wedges and putter. Do you guys test the balls using putters with inserts, milled putters, etc.? Forged or cast wedges? Combination of all of these? Just curious as I know everyone interprets feel differently, and I am sure it is difficult to keep the ball feeling "soft" while maintaining its durability and excellent wind properties. Thanks guys!

Feel is incredibly subjective! That said, we do an incredible run of testing with clubs of all kinds of materials and within different playing conditions, both human and robot. We cannot disclose the exact procedures but we can safely say we acknowledge all of the relevant feedback in development to make the best possible product for the target player.

I believe Tiger was speaking about the relationship between his irons/grooves and how different balls react/feel off the face because of this relationship. Can the average (under 10handy) golfer sense this? Do certain iron makes play better with a certain make of ball? Are golf balls designed with the families irons in mind?

Love my z945's BTW!

Hi Srixon,

Been a user since I came back to golf 5 years ago.

My question:

How much of spin difference is there between Z-Star and Z-Star XV? a couple of hundred RPM's on short game and driver. I ask because I have used XV for a long time but I would like to have a softer feeling ball.

From Michael Ross, Senior Product Manager for Golf Balls:

There is a slight spin difference between the two. The Z-STAR spins slightly less off the tee and slightly more around the green. If you’re looking for a softer feeling ball then definitely try the Z-STAR. It is lower compression than the XV and will feel a bit softer.

A couple quick questions about the infographic on the back of the 6-ball trial pack. The 2017 XV is listed as the higher flying version of the ball on drives and approach shots. Is this also true for greenside performance? Is it different than previous gen versions of the XV vs ZStar?

So far, for me, the 2017 ZStar just sounds fantastic, very quiet, and it has a noticeably higher launch around the green than the 14 ZStar.

From Michael Ross, Senior Product Manager for Golf Balls:

Around the green, both balls will come off the clubface at a similar angle but the XV does have a slighter higher launch angle with greenside pitches.

In terms of previous generations, the last version of the Z-STAR did fly higher than the XV due to having higher driver spin. However, the goal with the new Z-STAR was to keep the flight flatter, especially off the tee, and that was accomplished through our E.G.G. Core technology. Driver spin was reduced and feel became slightly softer and greenside spin increased.

I would be interested to see a numbers comparison between the two z stars and balls of other manufacturers, in particular numbers showing launch and spin data compared to Titleist and Bridgestone balls. I tried the new xv and it seemed launch high with longer clubs but it was spot on with wedges and short game. I haven't tried the z star but I am looking for a long term replacement for the Nike RZN Tour Black.

Thanks!

I just wanted to stop in and say that saw the new stuff at the pga show and went from the models I had been playing for quite some time to the new wedges, 965s and the driving iron and XV.

You guys make top notch stuff, and should be really proud of the entire new line!

Thanks to Srixon for replying to a lot of inquiries, although mine was not one that was selected. I was interested in the changes in the new Z-Star compared to the previous model. Based on my side-to-side testing and extrapolating on some of the responses from the Srixon team, it appears like the new Z-Star is slightly softer compression, and delivers lower spin off the driver and higher spin on short irons than the previous model. I really like the new ball and have played several rounds with it, and it is now my ball of choice for this year (thanks for the $10 trial packs).

If the Srixon team is interested in responding to followup questions, I'd like to see a comparison of spin (driver & wedge) and compression numbers of the new Z-Star and XV compared to the previous model of each ball.
