The all time leader was, and is Dan Pohl. Half a backswing, and easily 300 yards with a persimmon in the early 80s. Later, he went to the Taylor Burner. Hit it even farther.

I don't know about who has the shortest swing now, but in bygone years it was Doug Sanders. It was a joke that he could swing in a phone booth. Of course many won't understand the joke, I haven't seen a phone booth in at least 20 years. :cheesy:

 

Saw him play in 1968 at Oak Hill - US Open. Don't know how he could do it.

It was Allen Doyle... who had very good success on the Champions Tour.

Among the Seniors, like many have mentioned, Doyle was a freak of nature, but you can't even really call it a golf swing. It's just a hockey shot adapted to a different kind of puck. I watched him in the 95 or 96 US Am, and I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing for the first few holes. The contrast to Justin Leonard was just crazy.

 

John Cook had a pretty compact move, as did Sluman.

 

The mention of Sanders reminded me of an old story I recounted years ago here on the board. I spent part of an evening with Doug (and many other interesting folks) at a Masters function at Frank Christian's house, and my friend and I were asked to see Doug back to his rented condo safely, which raised the interesting question of how that could have been any safer than having Doug drive us, but I think the host knew better than we did.

 

In any event, Doug was a very friendly and gracious host to us back at his place. He wouldn't let us leave right away, so we sat a while and chatted. He told us some old stories and showed us his shoe collection that he had in tow for the week. Unbelievable.

 

His bag was in the little dining area off the kitchen, so I asked if I could look at his clubs and he was very nice about it.

 

Talk about tour issue. He had an off the shelf Orlimar Tri-Metal with an R flex shaft, and an old set of mixed irons with little dime sized wear spots on them. But in that bag was an old Ping Eye 2 sand wedge. That sand wedge had the grooves...I'm talking the lower four or five....worn completely smooth and flat, and the sole of the club just barely had the outline of the S still visible. How much sand practice would it take to do that with the hard as John Wayne steel.? It inspired me to work on my bunker game.
