Nippon Modus 3 105

Good morning gang. We had a Mizuno demo day out at my home club yesterday and I had a chance to swing the MP25 and JPX 900 Tour. I started with the DG AMT S300 had trouble getting solid contact with either club. I was then handed a PX 5.5 in each head and results improved quite a bit. I ended up preferring the JPX Tour head and we continued with that. The third setup that I was handed was the JPX head with the Nippon Modus 105X. The results were outstanding with this configuration, but I must say that I was a little perplexed as I've not been an X-stiff guy in the irons before. I briefly flirted with the KBS Tour V in X, and while the results were good, I just didn't care for the feel and promptly went back to a stiff flex.

So here's the question, is the Modus 105X comparable to a stiff KBS C-Taper (my current shaft) in terms of flex, etc, just lighter weight, or is it a different animal all together? Also should I be concerned with late round muscle fatigue (back surgery a couple years back) making the X flex too much work to swing? Would it be worth looking at a stiff flex in a different weight class in the Modus line? I'd be curious to hear input from y'all on this as I'm giving serious thought to moving to the JPX this year. Woul

FWIW, the Mizuno rep didn't put me on the swing analyzer doodad, just eyeballed it with my club's head pro, so not sure whether I should get back up with them to see if it's worth using that too?

Weight is certainly different and can generally be more important then how the profiles match but the Modus 105X is actually softer overall than the c-taper stiff. The difference at the butt/mid section isn't too great so hard to say if you noticed any difference there - but the tip of the modus is likely noticeably softer if you have a later release and might give a bit higher flight.

I did get a higher flight with the Modus 105. It was similar to the flight I was seeing with the PX 5.5.

I loved the profile of the 105x but went with the 125x as it's heavier and closer to the weight of my old shafts. I could absolutely game the 105's but would need to smooth out my transition a bit(I tend to get quick).

The swing analyzer just recommends 3 shafts, so any good fitter should be able to sort that out after seeing a few of your swings and the shafts you are currently using. It's not worth going back to re-fit.

The ball flight was less peaky with the 125's, but both have a nice piercing trajectory for my swing. With the 105's I felt I needed to put a good smooth swing on the ball, and was always afraid to go at it hard because it would get squirrely on me. With the 125's I could take an aggressive swing and the shaft holds up.

Thanks. I'm sort of debating now whether I want to go the 105 or 120 route. I will admit, I did really dig the feel of the 105 X.

I have S flex 1050GH's in my Honma TW717V CB's and I love them. Nice high ball flight. I'm typically a mid trajectory player.

I haven't tried Modus 105's but I'm looking at picking up a set to put into some TN-87's.

I currently play the 105s in my iron set. I played the C-Taper Stiff amongst other shafts & the ball flight is much higher with the 105s. Doesn't balloon at all, even into the wind ( I don't know how with this being a lighter shaft) never had a nicer ball flight since the PX 5.5 flighted, but with better feel, less stress on the joints and better dispersion. I tried all modus shafts except the 125, after testing I found that the 105s over the 105x & 105s hsx1 was giving me the best results. Distance, dispersion and feel are all good.

i have the PX PXI 5.5 and really like them in my AP1's. i am going to a C16 fitting and i am told the Modus 3 105 tour stiff will be the one for me. Does anyone know how the two compare? The Titleist website as them almost the same in their shaft performance section. Thanks

I concur

i was pxi6.0 and i went with 105x soft stepped and love them - better launch and flight - incredibly smooth compared to PXI

the stiff from the 5.5 should be perfect

I must say I'm liking what I'm hearing about the 105 being easier on the joints. I'm contending with psoriatic arthritis and anything that will help with joint pain is worth a good hard look in my opinion.

been hitting the 105x for a few months now coming from S300's and really like them. love the ball flight and smoothness of each hit. my 6i SS was 89 but the S300's at times got heavy on long irons. my SW is still the same but these shafts have really helped my iron game which has lacked at times trying to stick greens. I was very inconsistent with S300's.

Well, I played two rounds over the weekend with my shiny new matte JPX 900 Tours with the Modus 3 105X shafts in them and all I can say is wow! Super, super smooth feeling shafts that still give nice feedback on slight misses. The Ball flight is certainly higher than the various KBS shafts I've been playing over the last few years (Tour V, Tour, and C-Taper), but it's a nice flat penetrating flight once it gets up. To me, it's quite reminiscent of the Project X shafts that I was playing a while back, but everything is just higher. I didn't have much going for me out of the tee box, so I had plenty of opportunities to flight the ball down to deal with low hanging branches, etc and the shafts responded quite well to swing input. Really great shafts.

I know this is an old thread but was wondering if you’re still gaming the 105x. And I thought I saw another post where you wrote that you have them soft stepped in your wedges.

I just ordered them for my 4 - AW. Still trying to decide which shaft for my wedges. Currently gaming the kbs 610 125 S+ In my 53 and 59. Not sold on them tho - yet.

Thanks!

I like the modus 115 paired with the 105

I agree. The 115 Wedge makes sense weight/feel wise if you are playing Modus 105 X iron shafts.

Doing that tonight. Putting the NS Pro 115s in my 54 and 58. Have 105 stiffs that I just put in 4-PW and 105x 8 iron in my 48 so shaft weight steps up from PW to GW to more lofted wedges. Sounds good on paper. Hopefully it will work out. First go playing will be in tournie on Saturday so no pressure.

Just had a fitting for a new set of cbx irons and I got put into modus 105 stiff. I am usually a reg in DG or a 5.0 in rifle, but the smoothness and feel of the stiff in modus felt perfect. More forgiving than other shafts, real easy to load and not as punishing on mishits.

Haven't played them on course yet but should have them before next weekend so will give an update.

I got mine for no upcharge as Cleveland is running a deal over here at the moment, but I would have paid extra for these if I had to. These were noticeably better in feel, distance, flight and dispersion than the other steel shafts I tried. KBS Tour in reg were close, with good feel but not as high flight, wider dispersion and slightly less spin. The DG in R300 and the lighter version felt much harsher on mishits and cost more distance on off centre shots than the KBS and nippons.

Interested to see how that goes for you.

Going to a 48 that is stiffer than your pitch, and then going to a very soft 54 and 58 sounds like trouble to me.

I found the 115 wedge shaft totally unplayable for me. Very flexible, very high flight, very high spin. Far softer flex than the 105x’s I had in the rest of my clubs at the time. Best feeling wedge shaft I ever hit but it only lasted 1 range session.

I use 105S in my irons, NS Pro 115s in my 54 and 58, and, 105x 8 iron in my 48. Coming from a 105S player perspective the NS Pro 115 wedge shaft is perfect - not too flexy or high launch. Feel great, can flight them, nice weight etc. And, I hate most wedge shafts like the DG Spinner - way too whippy and spinny. If you are a 105x player, maybe the 115 would be too soft.
