Has a new putter ever made you a lot better?

A few years ago I went through an Edel fitting and ended up with a semi-mallet design (I don't know the name of the head). I putted okay with it. The first winter I sent it back to be black chromed and weight put in the shaft. Better. Sometime that summer I put on a Super Stroke 2.0 grip. The next year I played with various amounts of lead tape on the bottom until I found a weight that I liked. Since then I have putted pretty well with it. I don't think it's a very attractive putter and have tried a Bette, DJ Spider, a torque Edel, and a Cameron. Some, like the Bette, stayed in the bag for awhile but eventually the Edel winds up back in the bag because I make putts with it, as ugly as it is. I can't wait to try the next one though, whatever it may be!

I have always struggled with short putts, the switch to a counterbalance putter has completely changed that. I no longer am terrified with blowing a putt three feet by. For me, the counterbalance just feels so much smoother, although I can admit if you play on slow greens it is difficult to get used to the heavier putter. I have a lighter counterbalance putter for early in the MN season when the greens aren't quite as fast.

For me yes, and it has stuck as an improvement for over a year, but probably not in the way you would expect. I always played a mallet, SC Khombi S. I was struggling with my putting and just got tired of looking at the mallet. I picked up a used Newport, starting putting with it, and during the course of "learning" a new flat stick, I had the AHA moment that slightly changed my putting stroke. I started to putt significantly better. Re-enter the Khombi S. My son borrowed my Newport and had to grab the trusty Khombi. I started sinking everything. Hence, the Khombi is back in the bag.

So yes, the new putter improved my putting, but I'm currently not using it.

I would say yes, just because I used to miss a lot of shorter putts that I feel I should make. That hasn't been happening since I went to an Odyssey 7 and a CB grip. Been easier for me to align and keep the face square through impact. Makes a big difference when you can make almost all the little 4 to 5 footers.

Not every short putt goes in, but now when I miss, it's off a bad read. Not a pull or yip, misalignment and a bad read. Half the time you have no idea what's happening..

Actually yes it has. For years I was always a blade type putter guy and never could see using anything else. Had a couple of Scotty Newports and played them for years. Then one day just for the hell of it I tried a friend of mines Rife 2-Bar Mallet putter and have never looked back. I have never putted better, am very consistent and have all the confidence in the world.

Style of putter made a huge difference for me. I went from playing anser style blades to mallets and my putting improved dramatically. I think the improvement on making short to mid range putts came from the fact that mallets are easier for me to align and my lag putting improved because the mallets feel a lot smoother through the swing.

Yeah, SAM lab fitting, went in with a flow neck. I am a SBST. Determined I was much better suited for Face Balanced. Experimented with Mallets and others after for a few months, but once I found a long neck, It was on.

That and getting a putter with no lines and started using the line on the ball.

Putting better than I have in years

My most recent putter has improved my putting tremendously. It a Ping Sigma G Anser and I believe the technology behind it plays half the roll and the other half was having it custom ordered to fit me, at 36.5"

I've been looking at this one too. Love the roll off the face. If I may ask, was it an up-charge to get the longer shaft?

I ordered it though 2ndSwing.com and didn't pay any extra. It did take a little more time to get to me though, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

I think it's largely about confidence. If a new putter gives you that it may improve your scores for a while

I got fitted the other week, was using a blade that was totally unsuitable for me, so I've now got a Scotty M1 midmallet. Custom for loft and lie. Just got it on Thursday, played two games last weekend and had 31 putts both rounds. (Both competition rounds). One three putt and that was from just off the green in an old divot so I'm not counting it.

Certainly feeling much more confident with it so far, hopefully the honeymoon doesn't wear off.

Note, putting this year has been particularly poor so while 31 putts may still sound alot for the WRX superstars, it's a pretty decent improvement for me.

I couldn't find anything on this topic. I know a lot of you love buying new putters and selling off ones you don't like. Have you ever bought a putter that just instantly shaved strokes off your score? Or do you just like trying new things to change it up?

putting is my strong hand and having the right feel/grip/length is huge in my opinion after trying out the 2013 scotty newport notchback i knew i had to have it and i go rounds without 3 putting .....hopefully never buying another putter again.
