Third best player of all time?

18 is better than 14.

Hence my use of the word “consistent”. How do you say that and also rank Hogan, Palmer and Snead ahead of Hagen?

They had a lot more PGA Tour wins. If you give five points for a major and one for a PGA Tour win, the 3 - 7 players would be Snead, Hogan, Palmer, Hagen, Nelson.

And if you give two points for majors and one for other pga tour wins Woods would be number one.

As for your previous post many many posts supporting Jack have stated ALL that matters is major count. Hence the common refrain 18>14. But then other positions folks can just use whatever they like to justify their pick. Same as you saying 5 for major 1 for other win or me saying two to one points. There certainly is no standard it's all opinion.

LOL, my dad and I watched that game in our basement with my beagle, it went on and on and absolutely loved it! Late picking up my girlfriend that night. Fun to remember back when I enjoyed watching pro football.

I have never said "all that matters is majors". But you are correct, it's all opinion.

Who would you argue is the third greatest golfer of all time?

I would vote for Sam Snead ... based on number of wins, majors, that gorgeous swing and the folk lore that surrounds him and his athletic ability.

Hogan easliy--Hogan may also be the best of the 3 without that car accident...

Funny how it works with golf and comparing eras. A century from now the discussion will be the same cast of characters. Hogan Snead Jones Nelson will all be THE legends of the game. Because all it is based on is career record.

How many folks honestly think Cy Young is the best pitcher in baseball history? 560 wins must be the best though, right? Those Montreal Canadians teams of the 50's and 60's would clean up today I assume? The Steelers of the 70's would still clean up today? The Celtics of the 50's would wipe the floor with the Warriors?

I don't have the answer for exact comparisons-none of us do. My opinion is put Phil in the 40's and his record would stack up with anyone's. Instead he is not in the conversation.

I think this goat talk is all relative. Hogan, Nicklaus and Tiger played in different generations under different conditions so hard to compare, especially if you compare Hogan and Tiger. Hogan played on greens that probably stimped slower than modern fairways. Hogan played persimmon woods and a smaller ball. Who knows how Hogan's game would have stood up in Tigers era or vice versa. We can only say that they are the two most dominant champions of their respective eras the game has ever seen. Nicklaus was dominant for longer but not quite as dominant in his prime.

Three guys have won a combination of 7 major national championships: Harry Vardon, Jones and Nicklaus.

So I guess you would have to say that Vardon is No. 3, after Nicklaus and Jones.

Tiger doesn't make the list.

Two guys have won over 75 times on the PGA tour.

So I guess you'd have to say Jack is #3 after Sam and Tiger.
