Fort Worth best public course 2017

I will be coming to Fort Worth 1-4 Sept to see my mother and father in law... Last year we played Cowboy and had a blast..I treat my brother in law to one round every year.

I know the courses change every year... I was wanting to play the tour 18 until I read the reviews for this year!!

For 2017 can I get a list of the best (price is not an option) public courses to play.. I am looking for lush fairways and greens.. would like to play west of 35w if possible..i hate the DFW traffic..

Thanks for any input...

Paul..

This is how Avid Golfer magazine rates the public golf courses that are west of 35. Don't think you could go wrong with any of the top 4 from the reviews I read about them.

1. Cowboys

2. Texas Star

3. Bridlewood - have played and highly recommend

4. Tierra Verde

5. Southern Oaks

6. Grapevine

7. Wildhorse at Robson Ranch

8. Fossil Creek

9. Split Rail

10. Sky Creek

11. Waterchase

12. Tour 18 - you've seen the reviews

13. Bear Creek - wife played it a month ago and said it was in terrible shape

14. Riverside

15. Iron Horse

As the poster said above, Sugar Tree also gets good reviews.

Squaw Valley in Glen Rose would be a bit of a drive. I have also played there and love it. They have 36 holes, btw.

Most of the above courses are east of I-35W if you want to hold to your playing to the west of the interstate.

Check into the redesigned Ft. Worth muni; Rockwood. Opened mid June after a $6 million renovation. Played it the first part of July, excellent condition but the greens are a bit firm being new. I think the Ft. Worth City Championship is over the Labor Day holiday. Rockwood may be hosting some of the flights so that could affect tee time availability.

You're right. These are west of State Highway 360 not 35. My bad.

And I have heard good things about Rockwood since it reopened.

Thanks everyone.. Looks like after all the reviews we will play Texas Star first then hit Rockwood for our second round.Bridlewood will be our backup plan along with Cowboy..

Cowboy was a blast last year... however I like trying new courses.. I wish there was someway I could play Colonial that one is on my bucket list... Silly me I had the chance to play that one back in the early 80's while stationed at Carswell AFB.. but I blew it off.. What an idiot.. I still kick myself for that..

Thanks again everyone..

West of Fort Worth-

Squaw Valley

Canyon West

Sugar Tree

I just played all 36 at Squaw Valley on 7/26....never even knew about this place. Both courses in exceptional shape...especially during the hottest part of the summer. I liked Lakes better than Links if you had to pick one, but the suggestion would be a long day for all 36. Waterchase and Texas Star are solid choices.

Good list, would say Hawk's Creek should be on the list over courses 11-15, Tour 18 should be avoided at all cost and while Fossil Creek is a nice design it is notorious for some of the slowest rounds in the metroplex

I've played Squaw Valley many times, worth the drive, and it's cheap. I was in DFW in July, there is no good way to get anywhere. Construction getting in, construction getting out, construction right in front of where you want to be.

Been that way for years, once they finish a road it's time to start over again

"Finish a road", that's a good one. It seemed worse this visit than previously.
